Regular cannabis users 'at greater risk of mental illness'
Regular cannabis users are at greater risk of developing mental illness later in life, according to research.
One study found that the risk was seven times higher for heavy users, said Professor Robin Murray of the Institute of Psychiatry in London.
Speaking at the Royal College of Psychiatrists' annual conference in Edinburgh, he said: "In the last 18 months a number of studies have confirmed that cannabis consumption acts to increase later risk of schizophrenia. This research must not be ignored."
The findings come as the Government prepares to downgrade cannabis from a Class B to Class C drug next year.
Most people caught in possession of a small amount will have the drugs confiscated and receive a reprimand or warning, the Home Office has said.
According to a Government fact sheet, cannabis "can cause psychotic reactions amongst individuals with mental health problems", but it does not suggest use of the drug can prompt those problems.
For his study, Professor Murray reviewed research in Sweden, Holland and New Zealand.
A recent Dutch study of 4,000 people in the general population showed that those taking large amounts of cannabis were almost seven times more likely to have psychotic symptoms three years later.
Another study, in 1987, of 50,000 Swedish Army conscripts, found that those who admitted at age 18 to having taken cannabis on more than 50 occasions, were six times more likely to develop schizophrenia in the following 15 years.
Professor Murray said these findings had been largely ignored.

Study: Brain Not Permanently Damaged by Marijuana
6/27/2003
Researchers analyzing prior studies have found no evidence that smoking marijuana permanently damages the brain, Reuters reported June 27.
The University of California at San Diego (UCSD) study looked at the mental function of regular marijuana smokers when they were not high. They used 15 previously published studies on the impact of long-term marijuana use to reach their conclusions.
"The findings were kind of a surprise. One might have expected to see more impairment of higher mental function," said Dr. Igor Grant, a UCSD professor of psychiatry and lead author of the study.
While marijuana affects perception, the researchers determined that it has only a slight long-term damaging effect on learning and memory. The research showed no long-term effect on reaction time, attention, language, reasoning ability, and perceptual and motor skills.
The study's results could prove significant in the medical-marijuana debate. "If we barely find this tiny effect in long-term heavy users of cannabis, then we are unlikely to see deleterious side effects in individuals who receive cannabis for a short time in a medical setting," Grant said.
Anecdotal evidence suggests marijuana can alleviate pain or nausea in certain patients, though no controlled studies to date have demonstrated those effects. "If it turned out that new studies find that cannabis is helpful in treating some medical conditions, this enables us to see a marginal level of safety," Grant noted.
The reseachers also observed that heavy cannabis users often abuse other drugs and might incur long-term neurological damage from substances like alcohol or amphetamines.
Limitations in the analysis included the number of subjects in some of the studies analyzed, and inadequate information about factors like additional drug use in others.
The study's findings are published in the July 2003 issue of the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society.

Well, Frog, the study Rip refers to didn't say the heavy weed whackers got dumber...just that they were more likely to develop schitozophrenia (spelling?). Your study also notes a slight long-term damaging effect on learning and memory, and further notes that no scientific studies support the "ancedotal" evidence of the medical use of marijauna. So, the conclusion is that it's proven to be potentially harmful, and to have no measurable benefit. I.e. it should remain illegal. Thanks for your support.

Marijuana is the root of all evil. Anyone who has or does smoke it has or will end up a raving lunatic or social deviant. We should execute anyone caught posessing it.

Huh?

if you also notice it says that alcohol has more of an effect on long term health then cannibis. both should be legal for adults in america to consume in their homes.

That might be the dumbest arguement I have ever heard.
With your logic, most food additives should be illegal.

Geeze, some of you guys need to lighten up! (Note, I said lighten up, not "light up":)). It is interesting however that in a time where vitually everybody seems to be in favor of discouraging smoking of tabacco (a legal product), there is an outcrying, "make pot legal!" The whole country seems to be doing everything to make smokers feel like second-class citizens, yet if you smoke pot, you're "cool." Go figure.

Funked hit the nail on the head. There are also very strong parallels between heavy smoking of cigarettes and schizophrenia. Does this mean that cigarettes lead to mental illness? Absolutely not. It simply means that some folks predisposed to mental illness will suffer from some symptoms earlier in life and turn to something to sooth it with; be it drugs, alcohol, or nicotine. The age of onset for first psychotic breaks is generally in the 20's to early 30's. These folks had the predisposition long before this, but it usually takes the onset of significant life stressors to trigger the illness fully.

If tendency to develope illnesses would be a reason to ban or regulate something, there wouldnt be much left out from it.
BTW, if marijuana were so bad for your healt when used heavily, why arent they studying the population of Jamaica? Now those guys smoke some fat buds, with potency much much higher than in the 70s ( ;) ) all their lifetime. The reason for not to study them would be, that you just cant find much juicy stuff from those statistics. Its much harder to manipulate real life than some laboratory studies.

And, what makes you think those kids are "hard working"? ;)
California's high-school exit exam, once heralded as a sure-fire way to ratchet up achievement and make a diploma worthwhile, will be postponed amid concerns about high failure rates and the political and legal backlash from denying thousands of students the right to graduate next year.
A majority of the members of the California Board of Education said they would vote next month to delay implementing the exit-exam policy. By pushing back the requirement for passing the exam at least two years to the Class of 2006, board members said they would give students more opportunity to master the necessary English and math skills.
The intent of accountability for individual students has given way to a mixture of politics, ethnic anger and educational and social-justice concerns for students who have been repeatedly unable to pass the test, even though it is geared to a ninth-grade level in math and a 10th-grade level in English.

Yo all,
Manedew, Yep you can buy absinth here
Nephew loves the stuff but it's like £70 a bottle last i noticed
"Artemisia Absinthium is the chief flavouring ingredient, native to Europe and Asia.; other aromatic ingredients include aniseed, licorice, hyssop, fennel, angelica root, star aniseed... Wormwood is a long-lived plant, with greyish-green leaves and the flowers have a greenish-yellow tint, and like leaves give off a strong aromatic odor and are bitter to the taste. Thujone is a toxic chemical present in wormwood and has a similar molecular geometry with THC, the active chemical in cannabis"

wtf is artificial about flowers?
to change their brain chemistry:
some people exercise,
some eat sugar
some smoke crack
some drink caffeine
some drink alcohol
some chew betel nut
some smoke cigarettes
some drink absinthe
some eat psilocybian msuhrooms
some chew qat
some sit and watch TV all day
some inject heroin
some use 'mind machines'
and some smoke dried cannabis flowers.
most of this (apart from TV and mind machines) have been going on for the last 5000 years at least, and shows no sign of stopping.
people like to get off: a little, alot, often, seldom, but they do like it. always have done.
as for the 'causes mental illness' question - schizophrenics have had some relief from cannabis. Not knowing they were schizophrenic, they found that cannabis, smoked socially, would dampen down the worst symptoms - and as a result began to smoke it regularly.

481. You do not think there are schizophrenia dangers and all of that.
__(Professor Nutt) It may exacerbate schizophrenia in some people, may ameliorate some symptoms in other people. On balance there is probably a negative benefit in schizophrenia, but that is not a major public health problem.
And Bimmer is the word you are looking for , whereas Beamer is the bike obviously.
There is a car dealership in Stoke Newington (or nearby) called "Rude Bimmers and Mercs" - Bimmers being mainly used by drug dealers and the over 50s in the UK.

I have no problem with legalizing pot. If more people smoked it there would be less competion for me. there would be more amusing pratfalls to watch but...
make it subject to the same laws as booze... no loaded in public and a DUI for any in your system while driving.

Fact is MJ does not impair your judgement and driveing ability as does liquor. You can't give breathalizer for smokeing. Public intoxication HA!!, you gonna leave that judgement call to a cop? Guess you've never been picked up by the liquor-gestopo, doesn't matter to them if it's a private party and they have no warrent. They'll still kidnap your ass. Damn pigs. You'd think they'd have better things to do with thier time, like real cops. What loser's.
Good that you support it, but don't belive all that "It's not as harmless as we thought" propaganda. (like the one where this chick get knocked up ...or they say it has as much cancer causeing tar as 4 cig's [like most people smoke THAT much weed]) or where the morons speed out a drivethrough and hit a little girl on a bike. Would that commercial work on you if they had a cell phone in thier hand?
Used to blaze on my way home from work all the time, never got in a wrek even in 8 lanes at rush hour .... in construction zones, etc, etc... this while talking on my cell phone :D
Oh and don't drink Snapple .. they support anti-cannibis lobbying, boycott thier tulips ... if most people knew that, bet they'd be bankrupt
-
Manedew, smoking certainey DOES impair your ability to drive. I have done it and it was certainly not as easy as driving straight.
And saying it doesnt impair you as much or in the same way as alcohol is irrelevant.
You are right in saying their isnt a breathalyzer for MJ but there are other way to find out if you are impaired by the use of drugs. (eg. the "lollipop".)
Smoking up while driving and not hitting or killing someone is not proof that MJ does not impare your judgement, it is a proof that you have horseshoes up your ass.
-
smaking pot does indeed impair your ability to drive or perform any task. I smoked pot for maybe 10 years. I recall one time waiting for the light to turn red so that I could go.
I find "huh?" offenssive. we have enough stupid people without a bunch of potheads in public. Potheads think they are witty just like drunks think they are smart. both need to stay out of my face.
drunk in public... is annoying... giggling idiot potheads in public is annoying... potheads driving is dangerous. They need to get DUI's.
Other than that.... knock yourself out.
lazs
-
You should note I didn't say it dosen't impair your ability ... just that it's nowhere near what acohol does. Personally I think people on some legal perscription drugs are more dangrous.....
the point is you can't test it.... and trusting cop's on judgement calls is not a good thing IMHO ; Cops with power is a bad thing... I'm aginst giveing them anymore .... They aren't judges on wheels... this is really my point coupled with the fact that pot is proably alot safer than the legal liquor limit in most states.
I'm just worried about the affects bad cops, "pigs", have on our society .. and laws that let cops make judgement calls are just downright wrong .... most pigs I've met are redneck loser's, not like city cops... by what you say about "public intoxcation" .. you seem to support this idea .... don't mean to pull this off topic, but think about the implications of what your saying.
You saying you don't want to see drunks in public ...how is that your right? Who makes the judgement call on weather your "drunk" or "stoned"? maybe you see the problem now .... and maybe some will understand why alot of my generation HATE pigs and cops alike. Maybe some will understand why a song 'copkilla' was hit when I was a teen. It's not good for the people or the officers.... don't support laws like that, unless you understand what it brings... (note: don't mean to say the song was about this BS, just what feelings these laws lead too)
edit: I also feel comments about 'witty' potheads in your face highlights the orginal post well.... these aren't the productive members of society that smoke ... these may-be mentaly unbalanced people that happen to also smoke weed.... we have them all over VT :p ; just like drunks ... but I don't think 'judgement' laws are the answer.

i dont care if some one smokes tobaco or pot,,but tabaco is way more lethal,,,and alcohall hands down kills more people a year than anything,,,more than guns,,more than cancer and aids put together,,,,{most}people on this board are happy to drink up a beer,,heck most everyone i know,, i drink once and a while,,but does that make us better than a pot smoker?,,,i guess not if you notice the kill ratio by alcohall and effects it has on your mind long term and short,,plus liver damage,,hepititus,,and many othere problems,,,think most people are just brain washed into beleving just because its illegal,,its bad!!,,not allways the truth,,but seems like they been spending alot of money and over 40 years tring to prove its bad,,,,,but we can all see the bad in alcohall right away with out 40 years of testing
i dont smoke cigs or pot,,but i can see threw all the hype<~~i would ride any day in a car with a dope head than some one thats drunk,,atleast dope heads drive good because there afraid of being pulled over,,lol if it makes them feal better and aint going to kill them,,let them have it

Yeah, I don't think anybody is lobbying to legalize DUI . One time when I was in highschool I was driving home and couldn't figure out why I couldn't see out the windshield . I had the defrost on, the wipers going and everything . Then it occured to me to turn the headlights on .

yeah, and folks who smoke a lotta weed are 50 times more likely than the general population to do a lot of acid.

Weed smoking/ingesting would be a thing of the past if you had to take a P test when getting a driver's license. Then a test every 5 years when you renew your license.
That would pretty much take care of the MJ problem with minors...and everyone else who drives.:D
Alcohol would still be a big problem though. The only place to start is with the teenagers. When they learn it's not cool to be impared while driving, and smoke weed along with drinking a Budweiser while cruising the neighborhoods, maybe they won't end up being alcoholics/potheads later in life...if they live that long.
(Mother mode on...)
Problem is, with young people, its hard to stop with just one drink or joint. The order of the day is party hardy. I used to be young once. Some of the things I did were mild compared to what my buddies did under the influence and driving. I've been lucky so long, I figured it was time to take heed. I will not drive unless I'm 100% sober. Period. Only exception would be an emergency of the direst kind.
If you must, at least stay home and don't drive around after getting stoned, and/or while drinking. I hear marriage solves many of these problems. For those who don't want to get married, play Aces High...you can't get hurt in the MA, (not too bad anyway.):D
About MJ in general. The older you get, the slower you become. MJ is a depressant and, especially when combined with alcohol, it slows reflexes down considerably. This is a fact, and something to think about. People can tell when you're stoned, immediately from the smell, if you just smoked. Don't think you can hide it.
And with cigarette smokers being singled out as social misfits, I doubt MJ smoking is going to gain much acceptability. Though you and I know, this has nothing to do with a person's character; some "misguided folks" don't think that way. And they are often the ones who ruin your day. Be careful and aware at all times. Thank you.
Just my 2 cents.

An couple of weeks ago an friend got pulled over by the cops, he had drank 6 beers and after that he took 3 extacy pills (over an period of time that evening), the cops notice that he was intoxicated (drunk) and starts to search him.
After that they drive him to police station (while my friend pops his 4th extacy pill, wich was hidden in his sock).
And guess what, the computer based alco test machine gives an reading of 0,001, it says that hes sober, the police men then politly gives him an ride back to his car and he drives away...
Lucky guy!

The police should have taken your friend to the hospital.

I think that what would happen is that if a cop smelled pot or the person was acting loaded he would be tested... I don't know how much "junk" he could ingest (isn't bleach one of em?) before he got pulled over but I am guessing that he would test positive and get a DWI.
I don't want him on the road... enough people who are zonked out on simple cell phone meditation. Can you imagine someone on pot AND talking on a cell phone? Huh?

see it all the time and it's friggin' scarey!
lately though, at least I've seen more and more people pulling off the road and stopping to talk.. or stare in stupor.. or whatever.
pot smoking impairs judgement, causes lack of drive (duh), etc etc...
if you needed an operation would you want a pot-head doing it?
then why should they be allowed to drive while high...?
granted the degree is different but the fact is that pot impairs

Of course it does wlfgng but like every other drug.... It tells you that you are ok and that it is your only true friend and that all those other people don't know what they are talking about and she woulda left you anyway cause shes a controling squeak who doesn't want you to relax and..... "hey the light turned red aren't you gonna go?"
