This is addictive as hell...
-
You're right.
I actually got a couple of them to swirl around the moon and the planet before getting sucked into the atmosphere. I do better when I release multiple bodies instead of one at a time; as in, click, click, click --> swirl -->swirl --> crash, crash, crash
instead of
click--> swirl--> crash
click -->swirl--> crash
-
I had one make a perfect 8 around the earth & moon
The fun thing is that even if you send them on gigantic orbits off the screen they will come back
-
strangely it is. you can get some odd orbits going. i have 5 going in what seems to be perpetual orbits
-
You know you can give it speed by holding the mousebutton and moving the mouse? That is how I got the 8
-
WOHOO...one of mine has been in orbit for 40 laps now...
-
Sweet, I think I've got one in infinite orbit. Been spinning for a few minutes now. Just started it close to the earth and gave it a little kick with the mouse. It alternates between an oblong and circular orbit. Man, I should be a rocket scientist!
SOB
-
Nice.
I used a sim like this in a college class on space flight. We had the whole solar system in there with the orbits of various comets and stuff, lots of fun.
-
Yeah, I think I have that orbit too. Whenever the angle is too steep and you know it will hit the earth next time, the moon comes along and holds it back some...
-
Just broke 100 laps.
Too bad they dunt have a counter on it. I think my guy will orbit for a few years.
-
Perk the Sattelites!
:D
-
Am I a dork for feeling worried when my "perpetual" orbit starts swinging perilously close to the atmosphere?
Oh the suspense!
-
click like mad andf you get some cool strings going! Very fun!
-
Asking that question automatically makes you a dork.
I tell it like it is. :)
-
LOL
*Hortlund pictures Skyzzy sitting infront of his screen counting the orbits 98....99...100...101...102...*
(mine has been in orbit for close to 20 mins now)
-
Remember kids: Physics is FUN! :D
-
I quit counting. It is still running.
-
Mine is still there too.
Now it will be decided by who can keep his computer running the longest ;)
-
but the HARD part is to get it to do a figure 8 around the earth and moon...
-
Ok,..i got a new one running. It's orbit keeps it off the map most of the time and encompasses both the earth and moon.
10 laps so far.
Figure 8 is a good one Hortlund.
-
If you make a real fast orbit close to earth they will last a long time. Also as Skuzzy discovered, when you make an orbit go out very far, the moon and the earth start to act as one body and it's a simpler problem. You had just better hope the moon is in the right spot when it comes back in though. :)
-
Try getting one to orbit the moon. :)
-
Is that really possible? Around the moon I mean?
-
Apollo did it. :)
-
Yeah but didnt they have some sort of invention aboard that gave them the ability to move around in space?
-
NOOOO!
It's gone. He lasted somewhere around 33-35 minutes, give or take a minute or two.
4:52 to 5:27?
Time to start another...

Of course, Apollo had a whole freaking Battlestar.
-
Now I officially hate you Steve... work must wait.. I have 5 going now.
;)
-
bastards!!! I was so close to getting work done too..
-
They had enough fuel to shift between orbits but not much more than that, so trajectory is primarly determined by their initial velocity leaving the atmosphere. The optimal trajectory (from a fuel consumption/weight standpoint) is the one where you make the least amount of corrections with your motors. So maneuvering a spacecraft is pretty much the same as maneuvering an unpowered satellite.
Ideally you only use motors to:
1. Leave the atmosphere.
2. Correct errors in your flight path caused by the difference between real life and your calculations.
3. Shift between stable trajectories.
-
hehe guys...cant say I didnt warn you :)
I've been sitting here over an hour now sending sattelites to their death. But one has been in orbit over 45 mins now.
-
Ooo oooo!
2x around the moon, then towards earth, stopped, went back towards the moon and went around the moon 2x the other direction before hitting the moon... I am soooo addicted.
-
Yeah Funked, but they prolly do some calculations on flightpath and stuff too before they take off ;)

Like this! :D out of all of those i got 1 to orbit around the earth!
-
yeah about 40 minutes here too hortlund it is perfecto
:)
took 5 tries :D
-
This is too kewl. I have 4 in close orbits that look static. I like sending masses out on big orbits off screen long time later you will see them come back in some impact other go back out agin.
-
Bastiges! I was actually going to do some work this afternoon!
-
http://www.bigideafun.com/penguins/arcade/spaced_penguin/info.htm
This one is even better...
muahahahahaahAHAHAHAHAAHAHhah aaha <-- evil laugh
-
While the moon is going counterclockwise.. it seems much easier to get the satellites to go clockwise... why?
(I have 9 in static orbit now... hate is not too strong a word Hortlund  )
mmmust wwwork ggaaaaacckckk!
-
MT...personally Im enjoying life as unemployed now ;)
Have you gotten any figure 8 patterns going yet?
-
A couple but they don't last long.
Actually counterclockwise is best to get the moon involved.
almost forgot....!
-
266779 on the penguin one.
Gets tough when stuff starts moving.
-
Yeah, but did you see the highscore list? Apparently you get more points the longer distance the penguin travels. My buddy told me he had managed to set up some unreal orbit and he lay for like 30 mins before plopping into the ship...got something like 900 000 points for that one.
-
if you click and hold the mouse button you can flick them in the direction you want!
-
Just leave the mouse button depressed for some time before releasing the object. Seems that time elapsed with mouse button down=object mass. That way is easy to put satellites in loooooooooooong orbits :)
-
Getting them to orbit the earth is easy.
Now orbiting the moon is the squeak. Best I could do with the moon is ten orbits before it got flung off into the earth.
-
So far I've managed to destroy earth 1000 times over, get satalites to reverse orbit, s weave between the moon and earth, but I haven't managed to get one to stay in orbit longer than about 20 minutes.
fun though :D
-
for 20 mins ive had one doing a close earth orbit:D
-
JERKS posted this AFTER i was gone for the day GRRRRRR
LOL :D:D:D it is great .. just really wish i had had something to do @ work today ;)
-
I was reading, and it seems the only truly stable moon orbits are polar orbits which won't work in this 2D sim. :)
-
I managed to get three different stable orbits that have been orbiting earth for the last 2 hours. They are radically different ones too and in both directions.

I'm looking for a lagrange point :)
-
One has been going on for almost 40 mins now got another to do figure 8 for about 3 mins
very addictive......very.... :D
Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!!
i knew i shouldn't have messed w/it :( :(
Starting again :D
-
i've had one going now for 2 hours in a clockwise oval orbit and also another one that does a figure 8 around the moon about every 4 orbits.
DAMN you hortlund!!! :D
-
Damn, I can't get the site to come up.
GRRRRRRRR :(
-
managed to do the figure of 8, been trying to get one to orbit the moon, only managed one that went 4 times round the moon, others do 2 orbits round it then get sucked into it as it goes away
haha just had one that went round the moon 3 times then got sucked to earth and entered constant orbit round it!
-
Have one in stable Earth orbit, now going on 4 hours.
Had one do the figure 8 thing twice then splash
By the way no life now on earth, as no area not impacted by satellites many times over.
Anyone get any stable long distance orbits (out of black area)?

You are ready to be an Apollo pilot. :)
-
This is evil!!!! I've got a couple that have been going for about 4 hours now. I don't want to close the window! I feel some sort of strange attachment to my little satellites. I want the buggers to live as long as possible.
Cougar
-
I have two orbiting in opposite directions and have been running for the last 3 hours, so far.
-

I have a couple... can't really tell just how stable. They've been going for a couple of hours and only poke into the corners every now and then.
MiniD
-
neat MiniD they must have been started slow
I would love to see this in a 3D model, kinda like 3D chess.
My mind would explode, but it would be cool IMO
-
The were started 180 out from the moon, trying to match the moon's orbitting speed.
-
Thursday july 3rd on work puter I had 2 in orbit. I got back on that sytem today it was still up and they are still in orbit.
-
I got 7 going all in clockwise orbits around earth, over 20 minutes now. All eliptical orbits too, none circular really. Just randomly started a bunch and earth is now swiss cheese and moon is more like a cheese grater.
But, I cannot dupliate it with countercloskwise direction of flight.
Interesting, very very interesting.
BTW, my son and my money go to CU engineering and old college roomate is Physics Professors at CU. So, I'm glad they've put something up that is of use to the general public!
:D
-
Got one to BnZ the moon, making real aggresive slashing attacks, then managed a reversal off screen which flung it into a now almost constant orbit about a centimeter off the earth..
Set another one which is in an almost identicle course, in the opposite directions, they both pass over eachother ever half orbit.
GOt one making a wwiiiiiiiide orbit (offscreen for like, 5 seconds).. more like a comet, knockin over some trees on it's way through.
First one going about... 2 1/2 hours.. second one about 15 minutes longer.. wide about an hour..
Argh! the moon just sucked up me comet.. gonna leave this overnight, see if it still goin.
-
10 hours.. still goin.
-
Hortlund you ...you stupid man :D
hooked :(
-
Went about 15 hours, then i had to reboot :(
-
strange, mine lasted for just over 3 hours.... i really think that if it stayed that long the orbit should have been stable
guess nasa isnt gonna employ me any time soon :D
