For those that fly different aircraft each Tour, or change every so often, what is your aircraft of choice for Tour 42?
I'll start off. For Tour 42 I will be flying the Spitfire Mk Ia. At this point I'm not sure if this is a good idea, but I am going to give it a shot and try to have made a statistical difference in the performance numbers of the Spitfire Mk I at the end of the Tour.
So far the problems I have with the Spitfire Mk I are
- Negative G engine cutout. This has cuased me to be hit or killed multiple times already.
- Heavy controls at speed. This makes it possible for nearly all aircraft to simply outmanuver and escape from the Spitfire Mk I by diving to speed.
- Slow speed. This is simply irritating in that it takes forever to get anywhere.
- Poor climb rate. This makes it difficult to have the altitude advantage and makes it easy to lose it when you do have it.
- Poor acceleration. This compounds to speed, climb and fuel starvation issues.
Surprisingly I am not finding the firepower to be all that bad. If you get within D200 the eight .303s can really rip a fighter apart, especially at convergence.
Another fun thing is imagining the confused C.205 (for example) pilots when they look at their perk points for the last flight and wonder why they only got .67 perk points instead of the 4.0 they were expecting for that Spitfire Mk IX they just worked.:p
So, what are you guys flying this Tour?
-
Gonna try the FM2.
After all the chat about it on the boards I want to check it out.
-
i think i gunna go with the FW-190F-8. No reason just feel like tryin it.
-
Keep that spit I away from my P-40E.
I'm 10:4 in the P-40E this tour... killed spits and la-7s, died to hurris and 109F.
The early-war ride killers are other early-war rides.

P-38. My brain is so full of bong resin from college that each flight is like a new experience for me.
Ack-Ack
-
Gonna go for p47 series :p
Maybe 109G6/10
and 110g2 when HO'ers are out in force :D
-
TA-152
31-0 in it so far :)
-
I flew about 35 different aircraft last tour. That's typical for me. I'll probably do the same this tour. Squad planes for tour 42 include the F6F and FM-2. So, I'll be in either of those on squad nights.
My regards,
Widewing

yak9u for me :)
it's uber as everyone know ;)
-
after having a fun time schooling peeps in the 205 ..... im on to the 202 :D
-
Gonna Use the P-47 '25 ala Frenchy,
Though I'll mostly use it as Jabo/Attack Aircraft
Gonna Dabble w/ the VVS aircraft as well this tour
-
P-40E this tour
with an F6F here and there
P-40 actually has good potential imho
once you get to learn it a little bit it isn't all that bad...save for the slow speed
-
gonna jump between the 190A8 and the 109F4.
Maybe the TA everyonce in a while ;)

I`ll be flying...
LW Iron !!!
-
109Gx. Been trying the G6, but feel more confident with the G10. Both are difficult (for me) to do well in - a real challenge. That's why I fly them.
-
109g10 and not only in tour 42, :D
-
P-38
-
It's gonna be a long, frustrating tour for you, Karnak!
-
190a8
It's weird, I've been flying LW in AH for 2+ years and basically ignored the A8's existence because I couldn't stand its performance (or lack thereof). Couldn't dogfight for sh*t in it, very rarely successfully rtb'd in it. Only purpose of it to me was as a novelty jabo just for variety's sake.
Go figure, last few months all of a sudden I just love the damn thing. Prefer it over d9 and a5, do just fine knife-fighting spits etc.. Firepower, ammo and dive are great, turn rate isn't even that bad with a little finesse and ACM.
As my emphasis in tactics shifts away from being dependent on alt and speed to win, planes like this become a hell of a lot more fun :).
Also been enjoying 109F4, Zekes and F4Us lately.
-
I have been flying fm2, f6f, and... because of all the timid 51's and 47's around I have been flying the tempest and -4 and yak.

So just what do you expect a yak to do about timid 51 drivers? If they're as timid as you suggest you aint gonna get near em anyway.
BTW its 109g2 and la5 for me this tour
-
Spit V will be the main ride.
-
Since eye-popping speed and vertigo-inducing rates of climb are my main interest, I will once again mainly fly the F4U-1 with a smattering of FM2 in the intense short range furballs.
I may occasionally take a Mustang out for old time's sake with the squaddies.
A few other incredibly feared and dangerous uber rides like the C-205 for variety maybe.
-
gremlin... the tempest and -4 work pretty well on the timid 51's... if nothing else they run home with no cherry picked kills... 2 sectors to and 2 sectors back doing nothing but running and droning is pretty good punishment for em.

Think I'm gonna keep flyin the osty, I know, I know what you're all gonna say, poor rate of climb, wide turning circle, cigarette lighter don't work, cd player trashed!!
May give the YAK'y U another go this tour, pity bout the ammo load tho......
:D :D :D

Gonna try a new plane this tour. Someone told me the F6F was good and I think I will try it out. Anyone have any pointers?

Yes, search for mister Mathman, I heard is an awesome F6F pilot.
-
i recommend anyone try the 109F-4, its a very much under-estimated plane as the occasional "there is NO WAY a 109 can turn like that" cheat accusation's prove :)
-
THAT is MISTER MATHMAN ! ! ! ! and he is a little ok with the f6f if he is between 0-18k alt. LOL (S) Oh by the way if you can get him above 18k please let me know how you did it and if you kill him please please let me know how you did that also.........
and for me it will be as always every kind of plane a5 a8 205 47's 51's il2 nike spit typhie I like them all.

Had already planned to do this tour with p47 d25 after flying it a few weekends ago. Didn't know about the contest - and frankly that has complicated my life - people are hunting p47s a lot more now! Every single enemy goes for the HO shot (which I graciously accept of course! :)

I'd help you, but I've never flown it either. I hear its a great BnZ plane.

With the expected increase in P47’s this tour I’m parking the 109F4 and dusting of my old 109G10. :D

The Yak 9U improved my gunnery so much that I can hit in just about any airplane now. Close inside 200 and sniper off a wing or two. You can really run up a score in it. My advice: up with 75% fuel, stay under 15k alt, and avoid HO attacks.
This is my Spit V and Ki-61 tour, I think, with some F4U-1 thrown in for kicks.

Give me a couple days with it Math, and I'll figgure it out for ya.
-
My main ride this tour is the spit14.:) i already have 3 deaths (2 to ack, dam fragile spits) and i'm surei'll lose plenty more perks this tour.
-
What other rides ?

Been flying La5 last few tours. Tour 41 mucked about with different rides and sticking with F6F for this tour.

Just startin towards my goal of a kill in every plane (didn't do too bad last tour). I just can't force myself to stick to any theme or series of aircraft. HTC has given us an oustanding assortment of Aircraft.... I'll continue to show my appreciation.
-
I'm seriously considering making the F4U-1 my main ride this tour. ;)

I did that back in 1.08. Getting a kill with the Ar234 was the hardest part. Finnaly killed an Ostwind after about 20 sorties. (Ar234s didn't have tail guns back then)

Finally got around to trying the 163. Flew a few, had a blast. Get it to 300 and point the nose to the sky. BIG fuggin guns.

Math...
Someone lied to yah!! As a beginner, you should fly the Fw-a8...and turn a LOT :D.
Was reminded last night that I really enjoyed the Ki61 a few camps ago. Think I will spend more time in it.
-
I'll probably be in a P-38 if I log on at all this month...
-
oooo, or maybe a jugg 25... sexy brazilian markings ;)

La5FN....... and dieing alot.........

Basically flying anything slower than the N1K2/Spit 9 is an exercise in frustration anyway, since the La7s and P-51s will Bore and Zoom you with impunity, and you generally won't pack enough firepower to kill one in a snapshot. Plus as a general rule, the planes that are slower than the N1K2/Spit 9 don't turn better than they do anyway, nor do they climb or accelerate as well, so you'll be dogmeat in the inevitable 3-15 on 1. At least in a Spit/N1K you can take 1 or 2 with you.
For me its gotten to the point where I'll log in and not want to fly anything. The LW planes are generally fast enough to escape from the N1K/Spit part of the gangbang, but then an La-7 will run you down, and even if the pilot sucks so bad he can't kill a vastly inferior plane on his own... well that isn't his job anyway. His job is just to run you down so the pack can catch up. Spits can be fun to fly, I prefer them to the N1K, but it gets old watching the runstangs and La-7s run away. Don't fly the runstang much because it doesn't fit my fighting style, and the La-7 is complete easy mode, so that gets old fast.
Tried the Spit I out a little bit... you can earn perks really fast in it, if you manage to kill anything. First sortie I had a runstang bore and zoom me for about 20 minutes until a 262 came along and drilled me, second sortie ended up being 3 spit IXs and a spit 5 against me in a Spit 1. I think the Spit 5 actually turns better than the Spit 1, seems like it does anyway. Spit 1 kinda gets to the point where you are just kinda mushing along at 80 mph but not really going anywhere.
-
Spit IX..I forgot how great this plane really is.:)
-
agree with urchin.......
but urch....try what i do......get a tif(fast)....then Hurri2(slow).....then D9(fast).....Mossie(try to stay fast) so on an so forth......i try diff. things all the time......that and ask squaddies what they wanna fly...grab same thing and have a ball flyin with squad

The trick is to fly a plane that the Spit/N1k/LA/Stang dweebs don't understand, like the Ki-61. Get it to 15k, point its nose down, and that little hot-rod will get up to 500ias, no problem. And, it'll outturn the Stang and LA-7. Keep some air under your feet and you can run away from Spits and N1Ks so long as you start your dive while they're at least 1.2 out (otherwise they'll keep peppering their long-distance cannon rounds at you).
Fly it like a 109E that can turn and has better fuel range.

Yak-9U for me this tour. 117 / 9 so far.
That sucker el learn ya some gunnery right quick!
Best single sortie, no refuel, so fer this tour is 10 kills. Gonna try ta git even more stingy with the ammo.

Gave my word to Frenchy that I would fly P47D-25 untill my birthday in August. Partially on the advice of Shane because I was getting too attached to LA5\7 dweebery and not developing my ACM skills. I've been flying it every night now since the 1st. Took one night as a Bish to fly with Frenchy and LeftFoot to see how it's done.
P47D-25 has no middle ground. Once you get alt and going, you cannot let up. Mixture of very agressive and very conservitive. Always have to keep an eye on "E", but when you engage, go at it like a Phirana. Never let up until the moment you know you have to disengage and run. I keep staying engaged just that little bit too long because of the aggressive mind set. I'm getting kills but I'm not getting home as often as I could. I'll get that worked out with another week or two of experience.
Big heavy American Iron can get addictive once you get in the groove.:D

The trick is to fly a plane that the Spit/N1k/LA/Stang dweebs don't understand, like the Ki-61.
GoF, the problem is, the people who try to fly them can't understand them either! :D
..
Anyhow in my case, I'm trying out the Bf109G-6.
Always thought I was an average, decent 109 pilot, but then I seriously realized that it wasn't me who was flying decent. It was the monster plane G-10 that was doing good. :D
So I decided to start from the beginning.. by working in G-6s, learn more about 30mm gunnery.. learn more ACM and defensives against those deadly Spits or N1K2s.. learn more weenyness from the 'Bore and Zoom' guys.. :D
So far, I'm being seduced everyday to up a G-10!

Urchin,
Yeah, the La-7s and P-51s and Spit IXs and N1K2s and Spit Vs and ect, ect... can all beat the Spit I easily if they know what they're doing. Ths Spit I is so crappy in the high speed handling that if anything gets you a little fast they can out anything you.
That said, I'm 6 and two against the Spitfire Mk IX and 4 and 1 against the La-7.
16 and 16 overall. I'm having trouble even managing an even K/D ratio in the Spit I.
About the Mk V, I don't know if it out truns the Mk I, but it certainly out engines it. I had one pull a yo-yo and I could follow. He killed me.
One thing about the turning on the Spit I is that you quickly realize how important turning speed is, not just turning radius. The Spit IX or N1K2 can't match they radius of the Spit I, but they can easily turn more degrees per second due to their higher speeds and better engines.
-
I kept mugging P-51s in the Spit I lol. I think I killed 4 of them, against other spits I don't do so well because I have trouble keeping the stream of paintballs on target long enough to do any damage.
-
Urchin... when I get a little frustrated I grab a tempest and run down the cowardly buggers. It is not that fun cause they lack any talent in evasives but it is fun to watch their pitiful attempts. And it is a way to burn up useless perks.
Even if you don't get to kill em you make em all fly home running.
