It looks to be a Spitfire FR.Mk XIVe.
-
the bent turbine passing beneath the vertical stabilizer says to me it is a Lockheed L 1011 in RAF garb.
-
Wow! That came out well. I was stood next to him when he took that picture - it's only a 2 megapixel digital camera. I've seen some good results with it.
-
2mb is enough for a shots "common Joe" takes in his walk in the park (http://www.stagas.net/museum/bigpics/). My cam is old Olympus C-220 zoom 2,1mb.
btw some of those works well as a wallpapers too; index here (http://www.stagas.net/museum/).

Wow...what a nice looking L1011! ;)
-
yup, its a tristar in the background http://www.raf.mod.uk/equipment/tristar.html

It's got duel .50s and 20mms so it's a Spitfire Mk IX but looks like the sub-variant with the clipped wings, not sure what the sub-variant was known as though.
Ack-Ack
-
The spitfire is similar in flying technic to the zero I think. It just has more power and faster. I have question, why does parked aircraft have wheel blocks like that. Is airplane going to roll away maybe.
-
It's got a RR Griffon engine and 5 blades - are you sure it is a Mk IX? Karnak's Mk XIV suggestion seems more likely.

Its a very very rare sub variant of the Spit IX call the Spit XIVE
-
Ack-Ack,
It is definately not a Spitfire Mk IX.
It is a Spitfire FR.Mk XIVe.
It has a Griffon engine. That makes it a Mk XII, Mk XIV, Mk XVIII, F.21, F.22 or F.24.
It has a five bladded prop. That makes it a Mk XIV, XVIII or F.21.
It has an "e" wing, two 20mm and two .50 cals. That makes it a Mk XIVe or Mk XVIII.
It has a cut down rear fuselage. That makes it a Spitfire FR.Mk XIVe.
-
It's actually SM845, a Spitfire Mk XVIII

Is it?
That's new info. I understood that Mk XVIIIs had high backs.
Thanks for the info Dowding.
-
Its a Spit XIVE. The two red things inside of the canons should be outside of the canons of it were a Spit XIV.
Spit XIVc had high back and similar canon arrangment to standard XIV. Standard XIV did not have high back.
-
I think all the XVIIIs had the bubble canopy, but I wouldn't swear to it.
That picture is certainly SM845, an FR XVIII, though.
A google search for "RAF Waddington airshow" found this picture:
http://www.kessel.co.uk/wad/03/h4.jpg
as you can see, it's the same plane from a different angle (not as nice a pic).
The S was a guess, but the rest of the serial is clear.
A google search for SM845 found this:

Your welcome, Karnak. Although I believe Nashwan came up with the information not me. I know very little about the different Mks. :)
