Title: Just Ignore Me Hytek
Post by: jamusta on July 10, 2003, 07:36:50 PM
Ok so hytek pops into MA today to answer questions. Since I look like Will Smith but sound Like Adam Sandler and with the bombardment of questions he paid me no mind.

WHY DO I GET TOSSED OVER THE BACK OF CV WHEN CATCHING FIRST OR SECOND LINE????

I need a response before I

Bust a cap up in here...
Twist some wigs...
Cream some crops...
Split some heads till the white meat shows...
Or give out a collection of OOOO WEEEEEE knots...

Never been tossed off the back of a cv, unless I've left the hook down and tried to take off after rearming.

How exactly do you do it?

Give it a try.. I land hitting first or second rope and instantly get thrown over the back. Its like the line is a rubberband. It happens to me alot to the point that i might start missing all the lines so if im short I wont get tossed.

Are you making high speed traps? Come in at just above stall speed.

I come in about 120 but have caught the other lines at 150 - 175 and its fine. 200 u flip. I just dont get it.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong... you're not making your landing at 200 mph are you?  Cause if you are, I know what you're doing wrong...

ed: I make my landing just above stall speed, full flaps.  Dunno the speed, but probably aroud 100mph.  Never had a problem.

No not at 200 but I have had to before. I usually RTB all shot up But I would say avg speed of 120.

Make sure your throttle zeros completly.

If your throttle is miscalibrated, you'll land and stop with just a tiny bit of throttle(That is, you'll start backing up)  if you back up over the wires with your hook down, your plane rockets backwards off the desk.

HMMM I will check on the calibration thingy... Thanks

Nope i think i know why...

There is only one way you can be thrown off the ship backwards and thats if your using throttle to move backwards on the cv AND your Hook is hanging..

It will shoot you off the deck..  So next time you land with a hook, remember to hit Shift G to retract the hook before rolling back..

And thats how that problem is solved :)

No time to hit shift g.. As soon as it stops its tossed in a split second. Try catiching the last one you will see

Ja .... he thinks it's happening because you're spawning and backing up with your hook down. Forget that. I'd go with the throttle cal. Then ... when you land (throttle chopped) .... and come to a full stop ... raise hook if you plan to rearm. :D

oh ok. The trottle is chopped before I hit the deck tho. Like I said the moment it stops its tossed no time to cut engine raise hook and speaking of rearm I havent been able to do it lately on a cv anyone else?

As soon as u  land it should be rearming right? I have even tried moving around on the deck to rearm but nothing.. Maybe its time to reinstall AH

ja, try turning your engine off before you hit the deck, see if it still happens.

jamusta, I'm not sure half these guys replying understand the situation that you're describing (half think you're talking about takeoff).  I have experienced the same thing that you have, and as far as I know it's been a glitch with CVs ever since they were introduced.  If you land and catch the very first wire, you're going to get slingshotted back into the ocean.  Really the only way to fix it is to land a little longer and catch a later wire.  Every so often it pops up in the Bug Report forum, and it never gets fixed, so I'm guessing that HT and Pyro don't think it's that big a deal.

I've been thrown off the back of the carrier many times when trying to land.   This usually occurs when I am damaged and have to come in fast.  But that shouldn't matter, real F4Us routinely landed at 130-150 knots.  I think the wires 'catapult' you backwards off the deck when you arent perpendicular to them.  I say this because I usually fall backwards and to the left off the cv.

On a different note, on American Movie Classics they showed an old movie with actual footage of SB2Cs taking off from a carrier deck, along with F6Fs.  The F6Fs were able to lift off before getting to the end of the deck, but all the SB2Cs 'fell' off the deck (like our F4U does).  They even showed one SB2C stall and crash into the water.

Do not use hook when landing. Use full flaps and carefully mannage throttle. Also it will help to set the frontal view to top/right position, this way even if you will not see deck, you will see the tower.

You can land almost anything this way.

Ok thank guys. Im glad it has happened to others. Now I dont feel like its just me......

Oh yeah, that has happened to me.  And like someone else mentioned, you stop,  get jerked sideways and straight off the side of the carrier.

Other times you get shot straight back like you said.

The best (and rarest) bug is after catching the wire you stop and then fly straight up. This happened to me about 2 weeks ago.

The approach and touch-down was perfect. Then bang! straight up off the deck and a sweet nose over onto the deck.  Had my squad CO on the island watching the whole thing.  Neither of us could figure it out.

Sounds like a hard bounce landing. I've had `em myself but I don't think it's a glitch. I've seen pics of WWII cv landings that were like that. :D

My pilot was wounded ... I was blacked out. And I was missing all my control surfaces and half a wing. And my virus scanner popped up a window. And I was guzzling a beer ... and eating ... and answering the ball and chain's questions that always require answering on takeoffs and landings ... and watching the interesting commercial on TV.

Yeah ....

Yeah ... that's it ...
