Title: Bad sunburn
Post by: davidpt40 on July 10, 2003, 11:17:40 PM
Was outside for merely 1 hour tuesday without a shirt on cutting grass.  I recieved what is probably the worst sunburn of my entire life (or at least the most painful).  Benadryly and tylenol settled the pain for the first two days, but today was a different story.  My back was itching and burning with pain so bad that I didn't know what to do.  Finally I got drunk and that seemed to help the pain subside.

So while surfing the web, heres some stuff I found out about sunburns:

UV radiation can cause DNA to mutate (which can lead to skin cancer).

Wearing sunglasses while in the sun can cause a person to get a sunburn (gland associated with tanning is connected to vision).

There is a hormone that can make a person tan without even being in the sun.

The aftermath of a nuclear war would cause the o-zone layer to be destroyed, causing horrendous sunburns on any plant or animal exposed to the sun.

You can get some lidocaine aerosol sprays that will take the sting out of the burn, best thing to do is go and lie in a cool bath for an hour or so - once it starts to itch you'll start to peel - aloe vera gel helps a bit. Next time get the highest factor screen you can 35 min, don't go out in the sun from 11.00 and 4.00, and spend only 20 mins at a time in the sun - skin cancer can kill you in about 6 months if you get one of the nasty one's - spent way too much time in the sun myself when I was younger now avoid it as much as possible - having moved to London this isn't too difficult.

Aloe...fresh aloe right off the plant.  Slime that stuff all over the burn and you'll be fine.

Slather on good lotion before you go out.  Remember ears and neck, whatever is exposed.  I used to ignore ears and got a nice basal cell for my negligence.

Main thing is check skin for unusual spots all your life.  Melanomas often occur where you can't usually see them -- in the middle of your back, for example, and they can terminate you in a hurry.

When in doubt, have any suspicious spot checked, preferably by a dermatologist.
