Sad to hear about that.

Doesnt the Cavanugh Flight Museum in Dallas have a HE-111 in flying condition?

I have made the trek accross town many times to see that plane.  It's a tragic loss.

That same plane that crashed was used extensively in the filming of the movie "Battle of Brittian"  That plane was also General Franco's transport plane in WWII.  It was slightly odd since it has English (Rolls Royce) engines on a Spanish made German Transport/Bomber.
 
To quote the article below, "According to Denis Bergstrom, editor of Gallant Warriors, the CAF's He 111 (CASA 2111) was the last flyable aircraft of its type."   (edited out: This is pure speculation on my part, but there may be planes restored to flyable condition, but they might not have the necessary equipment and licenses required for modern flight.)  **edit**  I talked to one of my friends who is quite knowledgeable about that particular plane and this is more or less what he told me.  "The plane was the last 'original spec'd' He111 in flying condition.  The Rollys Royce Engines were the Inverted Mescherschmidt spec'd engines from the mid 1930's."  The engine coweling was considerably different than the standard He111's but it still fit the Heinkel specs.  Any of the other flyable He111s have replacement engines etc.
