Title: HAAAARRRR Skuzzy!!!
Post by: sling322 on July 13, 2003, 11:17:36 AM
I have seen proof that Skuzzy doesnt just sit around and police the BBS 24 hours a day.

I ran into him yesterday afternoon at the movie theater where we both happened to be watching "Pirates of the Caribbean."  So what did you think Skuzzy?  I thought it was ok myself.  It had some pretty decent effects and even though the story may have been a little cheesy....overall it was good.  Johnny Depp did a really good job in his role as Capt. Jack Sparrow.

I thought the movie was excellent.  I wish hollywood would take note that special effects without a script or acting is getting stale fast.  Pirats of the Carribian had all 3.  It had excellent effects, but they didn't dominate the movie.  Best of all... they didn't have one single shot where somoene was jumping then froze in mid air prior to doing a kung-fu kick.

Jonny Depp did steal the show from the very first scene he was in.

Ditto on J. Depp.  He really made the movie.  I thought the story was pretty cool, and like the D-man,..liked the way the effects were tools in the support of the story and not the story itself.

The sword fight near the end was done very well.  I ain't gonna give it away, but you know the effects transitions I am talking about.  They were not even noticiable it was done so well.

Also saw League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.  I liked it.  A little darker than I though it would be, but a good movie.

Havent seen it yet - but Ive heard great things thus far from people who did.

"Johnny Depp once again proving hes a very talented actor" seems to be the first thing out of everyones mouth.

You should read the comic book/graphic novel.  I thought it was a decent movie, but I was spoiled by reading the book.  Hyde is much better in the comic, much more profane, vulgar, and violent.  The comic book is one of the best I have read in a long time (probably since Killing Joke and Watchmen - both written by the same guy that did League, Alan Moore).  It is researched very well, with all sorts of references to other novels, historical events, and people of the 19th century.  If you liked the movie, spend the $20 and get the trade paperback/graphic novel version of it.

Looking forward to seeing Pirates though.

the watchman comic series rulled. and PotC is overrated. it really wasnt that good. it was entertaining yes, but depp has had much better roles. he just looked better because of the crap around him. now fear and loathing in las vegas. now thats a good role.

It was disney's first PG-13 movie.  How'd you even get in Frogman?

Oh... and give up the "let's try to sound sophisticated" act you picked up from hanging out under animal's desk.

I've got my copy tucked away on my bookcase shelf, too.  It got me started on my graphic novel phase that ended after "The Death of Superman".

Rorschach was one tough nut; probably my favorite of the characters other than the Comedian.

Who watches The Watchmen?

LoEG question:

How is the Captain Nemo character in this movie? Its one of my favorite literary characters ever, and I would only see the flick if he gets acted well and given enough screen time.

Saleman says, "Mr Pirate, if your gona stay at a Holiday Inn, you'll need to wear a suit and take off that hat".

I liked the way they depicted Nemo, however, Jules would not care for it I am afraid.

He did not have that much screen time, and if you are expecting the Jules V. character, you would be disappointed.

Didn't they add a character for the movie? Sawyer?

They changed it a lot.  First, they added Dorian Gray and Tom Sawyer.  Then they made Quartermain the leader when it was Mina Murray (aka Harker) in the comic.  My biggest disappointment in the movie was Hyde.  He was not nearly as profane and vulgar in the movie as he was in the comic.  Plus, he is also not as violent.  He was my favorite character in the book.  The second series, going on now, makes him even better.  It explains why Hyde is so big and Jekyl so small and frail.  Plus, it also introduces some other characters like Dr. Moreau.  The second series is kind of a War of the Worlds type thing.  Really cool story so far.

As far as Nemo, I thought he was an Indian.  You may want to check out this site (http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Olympus/7160/league1.html) as it goes into detail about the various references in the comic book as the movie barely touches them.

Back to the original topic before it degenerated into a comic book geek lovefest:

Just saw Pirates of the Carribeean tonight. Pretty good flick. Johnny Depp was really good in his role. Movie was a good blend of action and humor and the sappy love **** didn't distract from the overall film.

Saw it yesterday, I liked the movie a lot.

Capt. Sparrrow seemed like a blend of a pirate and Johnny's junky role in Fear and Loathing during one of his acid trips.

There were a few cheesy lines, but atleast there wasn't overused pirate slang.

And out of the 2hrs, 20 minutes of the movie - I think only about 10 minutes of it was the sappy love crap, and even then it was strewn throughout the movie so you only had to endure maybe a minute of it at a time.
