Title: Royal Navy Carriers 'Too expensive'
Post by: gatso on July 14, 2003, 09:25:18 AM
BAe need slapping around, useless bloody company run by penny pushing idiots. They win the contract for the two brand spanking new carriers that are slated to take JSF and then move the goalposts claiming the cost has gone up £1.2 billion since January of this year!

The new Astute class submarine mess mentioned in the article is almost as bad, BAe involved people from electric boat (The Groton lot? going from memory) a few months ago because they were so far over budget and behind schedule.

Anyone else see the irony of complaining about cost overruns for an aircraft carrier when they selected not a ship builder but an Aerospace/Electrical Company as the lead contractor?

Heck, the MOD is sounding more and more like the DOD everyday.

Or is it just me?

What are whilred peas? Whirled peas? What are those?

BAe Systems is an amalgamation of several companies - although I'm guessing it will subcontract the actual building of the ships to a ship building company.

wtf... 2.8bn goes up to 4bn, while the capacity gets reduced from 48 to 20 planes!?

I'd boot some arses over there.

You know accountants are running the show when they name a sub class as 'Astute'. Might as well be 'Intangible'-class subs and have done with.

Almost all major projects of any kind end up with huge cost overruns.  It would be newsworthy if these carriers could be built at the original cost estimates.

The other two of the 1st batch currently planned are better: Ambush and Artful. Should be very capable boats if they ever get out of dry dock.

Heh... I learnt about intangibles from Curval on this board when he described the guy who said 'I don't buy intangibles'. :)

I'm sure they will be capable ships - modesty and understatement are good, but 'astute' is a little too modest for my liking. I prefer the old mythology based names anyway.

Everyday the war between the U.S. and the rest of the World grows closer...and everyday the odds of the U.S. winning get better.
