A local vendor is offering a laptop for $1500 and includes:
2.4gHz Pent 4 (400 mHz FSB)
64mb GF4 Vid card
40GB HD
512 mb ram
DVD-ROM reader/burner
Ethernet port + integrated wireless network capabilities
and other good stuff. I don't have the ad on me at the moment.
The nearest Dell notebook at $1500 has only a 1.3gHz CPU, a smaller HD, less ram, and no spiffy CD burner.
This would definitely help this coming semester at the university as I wouldnt have to lug around the heavy-arse tower + monitor.
Any input would be appreciated!

Sounds like a pretty good deal Octavius. You might want to check on who the laptop manufacturer really is; that would get you a really good lead on if this is a good deal or not.

I've never actually heard of them before... it's a German company called Medion.
Last night I did a comparison to Dell by customizing another laptop to the exact specifications of the notebook advertised. Turns out the Dell is $500-600 more.
Well, we'll see.

According to my boss who lives in Germany Medion is a pretty good company to deal with. He also told me that they are one of the builders of laptops for other companies around the world. So it might be that you could be buying direct so to speak.

They sell the Sager line which actually manufactures HP, Dell, and Compaq if I remember correctly. My friend just bought one from there and was very pleased with the notebook and the service from Powernotebooks, check out the companies reseller rating 9.99 out of 10 lifetime rating

In UK all aldi's pc n related goods are Medion, Reall good quality from stuff i've had off em
Seen their pcs and lt's in aldi (got a special on mons 19in in local store) specs seem good etc
New with warranty what ya got to lose ;)
(for uk'ers that didn't know aldi n asda amongst others are owned buy chap who owns americas walmart chains)

Defiance, Aldi is exactly the store that has this promotion :) I was surprised just last year when they offered a damn nice desktop system... I always thought it was just a grocery store!
Though, around here, it's commonly known as a "poor folk" store. Nothing wrong with that place at all... infact I like going there for food every once in a while... it's damn cheap and great for party supplies :D

The store I used to work in sold Sager's as well. It was funny because we would get in the newest model and someone would bring in an HP or Dell and we would have the same two identical laptops sitting out for display for about $500-$700 cheaper than their brand new Dell or HP that they wanted memory for. Sager is a very nice company to deal with also.

I just went to the ALDI site and checked out that laptop, WOW that thing has some impressive specs for the price. Integrated wireless,dvd/cdr BURNER. Pinnacle Instant Copy is a GREAT program that allows you take a DVD and make a 1:1 copy on a blank dvd-r/dvd-rw. I opened a netflix account and rented a bunch of DVD's ripped them to HD with DVDDecrypter then used instant copy to compress/take stuff out I didnt want. If your into that kind of thing I'd recommend going to these sites.

Yeah ALDI got a bad rep i think from the start with shelving full of plain boxes
As it's owned by Walmart the prices can be low as they have i think at least last year anyways the largest buying power in retailing (as in over tesco/safeways/co-op etc)
I read walmart worldwide with it's subs could undercut the competition and see them out of business
With this in mind you can see how they can afford great deals
All medion pc rigs went 1st day in my local aldi
Btw most foods are well not made but come or are packaged from germany, After being a "label name" man i was amazed how nice aldi food is
(try there none frozen lasagne) and cook it slow n tell me that aint worth the £1.99
I've tasted worse in fancy restaurants and paid x5 the cost for 1 5th amount lol
