Title: Most literate cities
Post by: Ripsnort on July 15, 2003, 10:50:51 AM
SEATTLE - A survey of literacy in 64 cities has confirmed it: Seattle bookworms are ahead of most everybody else.

The survey named Seattle as the second most literate city, edged out only by Minneapolis. Jack Miller of the University of Wisconsin Whitewater gave a literacy profile of all American cities with 250,000 or more people.

Seattle ranked number one in percentage of adults with advanced education, and number one in numbers of booksellers.

Other cities in the top five for literacy are Denver, Atlanta and San Francisco.

Oh... I'm gonna puke!

And the kids only watch the History Channel, all sugar has been purged from your diets and bedtime is 6:30... to avoid all those pesky prime time shows.

Rip's house strikes me as something from the Twilight Zone.  Somehow I envision ping pong balls fall from the ceiling to the delight of Mrs Ripsnort, and Mr Green Jeans ala Captain Kangaroo style. :)

Rip, do you have a trainset that visits "MakeBeleive" ?  And an overly friendly mailman?  :p

Your home just seems too perfect...LOL...

Lol, Westy... we tied with Vegas!

I dunno, but if book sales are a major part of the equation, maybe Harry Potter isn't a good yardstick for literacy.

LMAO!  Well, one does have to understand the words to learn the story. :)

I'm into non-fiction the last 10 years...Problem is, it takes me along time to read a book since I have to look up the meaning of every word in the dictionary!

Bah!  Who needs books when we have the movies?  Get your fingers all cut up and dirty from the ink.. yuck and EEK.  Reading books can be down right unhealthy and dangerous.
Besides, I can't eat my Tostito's with one hand and caress a beer in the other when reading  a "BooK."   :)

San Diego, back in the early 90's, had the highest Male to Female population of any US city, that is, more males than females.  This is probably why it rated low on literacy. ;)

Well, I'm taking advantage of the "I want an Xbox since all my friends have one!" situation.  I'm making him earn it. We have him doing a School 'Summer Workbook" to keep his skills up during the break...he's going into 2nd grade this fall but the work book he's working on is for 3rd graders! He's not having too much trouble with it and I sit down with him and help only when he gets stuck.  His reward will be an XBOX if he finishes this 100+ page book before school starts..and it looks like he'll complete it 2 weeks early.

What's your address, Rip?  The lil tyke has to be stewing a grudge against ya and I think this "Anarchist's Cookbook", with detailed bomb making recipes, is just the thing to liven up those lazy summer days  :p

So are you saying that taking him to the gun range with me is not a good idea!?

FWIW, he gets to go to hunting camp with our group this fall, as an observer.  I may buy him a BB gun though :D

only thing left watching on TV is southpark and reruns of various shows such as sienfeld, the simpsons, and family guy.

I had to watch a network channel the other day to watch a baseball game. The "previews" for the new shows were quite appaling. Since when did american TV get as bad as Italian?

Naww, no mullets out here.  The long hair just gets caught in your surfboard leashe or in the net on a spike during beach volleyball.  I wouldn't know about any homosexuality down here...just where are you going and what are you doing when you visit San Diego?

I lived there for 5 years.  Lots of mullets and buzzcuts and uptight weirdo enlisted military types.  This was over 10 years ago.

Ohh, you must've been in the Spring Valley/Hel Cajon area.  I pass through those places sometimes and I think that is where the mullets congregate.  I actually grew up in Rancho Bernardo where it's either bald or blue-haired, and still reside N County.

Sikboy, heh heh.  You caught us.  Actually though, Flutie is a transplant and it appears as though he's just visiting.  Can't blame us for mullets coming from elsewhere.  I think he got traded or there are talks of trade which is a shame 'cause he's well liked though I don't think he really did much here.
