Well, djust came back from 4 months in Thailand...
I have the itch badly to leave Sweden again... I have the oppurtunity to work in an bar in Malaga (Spain).
I figure i will start out with the bar job and while i search for an "computer-related" job at the same time...
Ive actually been outside Malaga for an week, i think the place was called Almunecar or something similar...
Anyone here from Spain that wouldnt mind answering some questions for me?
Take care.
-
Well, I'm from Northeast Spain, but if I can help, I will :)
Send those questions :)

I'm from the Northwest, currently working in Madrid.
Ask those questions, I'll try to help. :)=

I've got a question for any one living near Granada......
I've just set up a lovely little portable for my parents (who live near Granada); so they can stay in touch with their grand kids.
Any tips or clues on Spanish ISP's or buisness models?
-
Hi Seeker,
best thing you can do is to set up a free account with any of the big companies here.
There are special numbers to call from anywhere in Spain. You pay for the time you stay connected.
Prices are: 0,6733 Euro/min (8:00 am to 8:00 pm) and 0,6145 Euro/min (8:00 pm to 8:00 am, and on saturdays and holidays)

Your chances of getting a good computer job in Spain are the same as everywhere else (except perhaps in India): slim to none, and paraphrasing the great Will Farrell: "slim just left the building".
You can still get some low-paid temporal job.

Good luck mate, although I think you'll earn more in the bar :)

2-room appartment in Tenerife will probably be quite cheaper than in Malaga, but expect a minimum of 300 to 400 Euro a month. Perhaps more.
You can survive... but barely. It's what people with PhD students with an internship get :)

Thanks Cyrano!

Well that sucks, here in Sweden we are seeing sligtly more and more computer jobs being available... I think it will take off for real again in about an year, for sure...
How much does an Big Mac and Company cost in Spain? Or an decent meal at an restaurant?
-
Can't really say about the Big Mac, plenty of good food around her to go to a Mc Donalds (don't get me wrong, there are lots of people who go here, but I'm not one of them).
Mo thru Fri you can get lunch menus around 9 Euro. A dinner can go from 15 to 21 Euro if you don't want anything too fancy.
A Big Mac (I'm guessing here) is probably around 2-3 Euro.
Daniel
-
Hey, Spain sounds more expensive then Sweden! no way i can live on 900 euros...
The big mac was only for comparing prices...
I make 1600 Euros after tax in Sweden, and the prices in Spain seem to be similar to Swedish prices, if not an bit more expensive...
-
Prices in my hometown, Salamanca.
Big Mac, chips and coke like 4 or 4.50.
Coffee 1.20
Bus ticket 65-80 cent
Weekly groceries/meat/fish/pasta/fruit/milk/other food at the supermarket for 2 persons: 40-60€
Everything else as Daniel said, you could probably pay less rent sharing a flat with 2 or 3 students, but never under 150€/mo.
I have friends in Madrid doing IT stuff after finishing their studies and they are all around those 900€. They have to get money from their parents here and there. I'm lucky I did the 600 and 900 jobs while I was in college and still at home. The internet crash came about just as I started to work for more hired by the cudly nanny state.
We are fast and happily "converging" with the rest of Europe in prices, even surpassing it while salaries are pretty much stuck (extreme example: real state has been going up like 8% or 10%per semester for a few years now).

:(
I had the feeling that it would cost less to "live" in spain compared to Sweden, boy was i wrong...
I pay 360 Euros for my appartment djust outside Stockholm, 2 rooms and kitchen, 55 square meters, 10 mins with the subway to the "heart" of Stockolm...
I guess i will have to postpone my plans for an year or so, to big of an pay cut...
I´m traveling to Malaga in Oktober tho, to check out that bar job and get an tan
:)

Hey Maniac - your english is perfect, except for one small thing. In most cases when folks write in a 2nd language, they get so much wrong that it's not really worth it to point it out. In your case, you're so close to nailing it that I thought you might appreciate the lesson.
Here goes...
You're often using "an" when you should be using "a".
There are two kinds of letters. Consonants and vowels. "A" gets used when the word following it starts with a consonant. "An" gets used when the word following it starts with a vowel (vowels are a, e, i, o, u and sometimes y).
You fly an airplane.
You drive a car.
There you have it. Damn... I am such a nice guy. :)
-
He just strives to be like Hitech, give the poor man some time.
Daniel
-
Thanks an lot! :D
I cant remember the vowels, i have to print em out and have em by my comp i guess :)
-
Ah. Here's how to know what vowels are.
Say this out loud:
Aaaaaiiiieeeiioooooyyyyuuuuuu aaaaaoooiiieeeeeyyaa.
Then say this out loud: bdptvnctdvfg
Totally different, eh?
If they're soft sounding, like the 1st example, they're vowels so use "an" before them. If they're hard sounding, and stop abruptly, they're consonants so you'd just use "a".

I just went to Spain recently and at least croceries were much cheaper than in Finland or Sweden. Typical food stuff was 1/2 price and beverages even more cheaper. Cheapest beer was 15 cent!!! I will be going to Valencia for 3 weeks in september.
-
Thx for the input Mora... The only thing i need to survive is indeed beer ;)
-
15 cents a can of beer????? Well, it's clear that this place is nowhere near my city... where did you found beer so cheap?
-
Nash...since you are so good at the English language and explaining it to those who do not speak it as their first language...help me out on this one:
My wife (Vietnamese) always uses the plural, when she should be using the singular...or visa vera.
Example:
We are eating fishes tonight.
She learned the rule somewhere that if there is more than one object she should pluralise the noun.
What is the correct rule?
-
Curval. I think the rule is correct. Only problem is the word fish. In plural it is still fish (though my dictionary claims that is can also be "fishes", but this sounds plain wrong in my ear(s) :))
Some words are just inconsistent, and don't follow the regular rules when put in plural (putting an "s" at the end). One just have to learn which words are like this, since there are no rule.
Well, there might be, but it's been so long since I had english in school, that I now just go with what sounds right, instead of thinking of rules.

It was in a supermarket called "champion" or something.. That beer was their own brand but quite drinkable, other beers weren't too expensive either
edit: Now that I think of it that place wasn't too far away from Barcelona, just 3 hours south, It was in an area where there are a lot of tile factories. I was riding with a friend who was getting a load of tiles from there with a lorry.
-
Snefens..the rule isn't correct. There are lots of examples where the singular is the same as plural in English. My brain isn't functioning quite yet as I only have one coffee in me, so I can't think of examples off the top of my head. The wife ALWAYS gets it wrong, but I don't know of a hard & fast rule that would help her.
-
ehh, yes, that's what I meant with the sentence: "Some words are just inconsistant..."
I search google and came up with:
"In English, plurals of nouns are normally indicated by the ending –s or –es, or in a few cases by –en, as in children and oxen."
and
"•The absence of –s in the plural form of animal names (hunting for bear, a herd of buffalo) probably arose by analogy with animals like deer and sheep whose plurals have been unmarked since the earliest beginnings of the English language."
But there always are exceptions. two dogs/cats/horses.
I don't think either that there is a "end it all"-rule
-
uhh, and here it is all explained:
