I don't like sitcoms.
Mr Bean owns though.

Fawlty Towers is on the American BBC channel now and then. One of my all time favs.

I saw the entire collection of shows on DVD for $59. Think I'll pick it up.

How could you leave "Coupling" off that list?  Funniest show I have seen in a long while.

That Coupling show looks like a Brit version of Friends.

I thought that too, but it really is much better.  The character diversity is better, and the writing is brilliant.

They are not afraid to tackle subjects that would make most people cringe a bit.

That Coupling show is funny and generally more clever than 99% of American sitcoms (I don't ever recall seeing a split screen sitcom before this - and it worked).  And I can totally relate to that guy in the lower right hand corner, whatisname.

How can you leave out Allo Allo and any of the Blackadder series?

Bottom right is Jeff.  He is a trip.

I remember the split screen episode.  Yep,..worked really well (Steve and Susan splitting up.  Was an hour after the show was over before it hit me.  Splitting up and split screen).  Brilliant.

The Office is just about the funniest show I've ever seen. Right after Extreme Elimination Challenge of course :)

Coupling was a direct Brit version of Friends, only funnier. Oddly enough there will be an American version of Coupling on NBC this fall following Friends.

Now for something completely different, how could you forget Monty Python? Fools and Horses is good, but I liked Open All Hours much better. G-G-G-Granville, fetch your cloth!

The funniest Britcom I have ever seen is Father Ted!

Coupling wants to be Friends - it's an unashamed copy. Has it's moments, like Friends, but I don't really like either.

My list:

1) Fawlty Towers - superbly written and casted - only 12 episodes but every one a gem especially the Waldorf Salad episode:

"I think we're out of Waldorfs..."

2) Father Ted - surreal in the extreme. Easily the best sitcom to come out of Britain since Fawlty Towers. The episodes where Father Ted has to kick Bishop Brennan up the arse are my favourites.

3) Blackadder Goes Forth

The older stuff like

Open all Hours
Blackadder
Allo Allo
Monty Python
The Young Ones
Bottom
A bit of Fry and Laurie

are all excellent but I think too many watchings are making them wear thin.

But the Office is absolutely brilliant!

There are things that I will never laugh at. The handicapped - because there’s nothing funny about them. Or any deformity. …At least the little handicapped fella is able minded… or sometimes not - it’s difficult to tell with the wheelchair ones.

There’s good news and bad news. The bad news is Neil will be taking over both branches and some of you will lose your jobs… On a more positive note the good news is I’ve been promoted - so every cloud… you’re still thinking about the bad news aren’t you?

and of course Red Dwarf still demands repeated viewings...

Theres an emergency going on....it's still going on...

I'd forgotten about The Office.

I almost forgot Good Neighbors (aka The Good Life). That show had one of the most talented casts on TV. I loved the premise of Tom quitting his job to live off the land and be self sufficiant(altho all the land he had was his house in an upscale Suburban neighborhood)plus I had a thing for Felicity Kendall.:D

They will never make a successful knock-off of "Coupling" here in the U.S.

The topics of discussion are what make it so funny, and those topics will never be aired in U.S. prime time.

Why's that skuzzy? When is prime time? Over here we have a 'watershed' at 9pm, after which more adult stuff can be aired. It's after this time that Coupling is aired - in fact just about every British comedy mentioned in this thread apart from Fawlty Towers would be shown after the watershed.

I still don't understand why you guys like it so much, even in preference to Friends. To me it is almost identical except slightly more risque.

The only thing giving Coupling US a chance is the fact that they are sticking it on the same night as Friends, Will & Grace, ER, and Scrubs.  Hell, people even watched that crappy show Ed because it was originally in that time slot.

Prime time is up to 9pm in the U.S., but the sexual context of much of "Coupling" would cause screaming from various factions of our society and would relegate it to the 'after midnight' crowd.

Thank goodness BBC America is cable/sat based here.

I think Coupling is much, much better than Friends.  The character deversity is significantly better, and the writing is top notch.  Plus, they tackle content that is considered taboo here in the U.S. for a television series.
My wife and I are usually hurting from laughing so hard after the show.

Jennifer Aniston's character, on Friends, irritates me to no end.  Probably due to me being married to someone like that once upon a time.

Everytime 'Jeff' opens his mouth on Coupling, I have to be sure I am not in the middle of drinking anything, or it will give my nose a good flushing.

I see. To be honest I find all the Friends characters irritating - especially that Schwimmer guy and that Chandler dork. The over use of sarcasm really grates after awhile too. Friends is very popular over here though.

The actor who plays Jeff is from my home town, even though he sounds welsh. Funny kid though.

I would not have imagined Friends being popular in England.  Go figure.

At least they take some creative chances on Coupling.  Friends comes off as the same show every week, to me.

When Friends comes on I make a running dive for the remote.  I hate it so bad I can't even name one of the characters.

The last sitcom I liked was Married with Children.  Now all my favorite comedy shows are cartoons, like The Simpsons and South Park.

Friends is huge over here - especially so for the first few series. More popular than Seinfeld (which went out in a graveyard slot) and Frasier (which is my favourite American show apart from love muffin :)).

Porridge is absolutely class.  Blackadder, early Red Dwarf, Fawlty Towers, Young Ones, Bottom, hey, I even like Dads Army :)

Also, anyone heard of a series called 'Black Books'?  I found that hilarious!
