Learned this with my first vehicle...neither my brother nor father could drive a stick...never had to worry who was borrowing my truck :p

Oh,..the tranny thing...hmmm..
Sports Cars: gotta have a clutch pedal
Luxo-boats: slushers are fine

used to insist on stick, now I figure it's too hard to drink coffee and shift.

Manual all the waaay! Shoot I even taught my daughter this year to drive on a 5-speed. errrr ummm, maybe that wasnt the best idea in the world.

Manual. If for no other reason than you can use it to start the car when your battery is too low to crank the starter.
-
Wife made me go to automatic for two reasons:
(a) whenever we'd go to special events where there would be a lot of stop-n-go traffic in the parking lot and immediate vicinity, I always voted for us to drive her car (which had an automatic) because I didn't want to burn my clutch;
(b) when it came time for a new vehicle, she made me buy automatic because she was tired of us always taking her car to special events where it could get dinged up by too-close parking.
I said "Fine, but its got to have a minimum of 6 cylinders." :p

Only gay people use auto. It's for soccer moms. One exception is disabled people though.
It's the same as with scooters where you just give gas and have two hand breaks and no way of shifting gear. Too easy, no fun, performance lost.
If you're gay/drive auto FunkedUp; lemme know. Kirin has a g-string he isn't using anymore - it's a bit on the dirty side with lots of human DNA on it, but nothing that can't be washed away. :D

Yeah, try to tow a 7,000 pound boat through city streets with a manual shift pickup....you'll change your homophobic spew right quick! < insert obligatory smiley emoticon here >
Tell me Santa, Sail or Motor, which of these are gay?

Somehow driving doesn't give me a woody the way it does some people. Give me an auto any day.
If you need to constantly manipulate a stickshift and clutch to be a man, well, so be it.
-
bite your tongue for even asking funky!
autos are ok if you are disabled or your wife runs your life or if you are just "very sensitve for a male". Prone to breaking out in tears while watching lifetime or..... dowding. (not that there's anything wrong with that).
If you won't cop to any of those things then you could say that you bought the auto cause you are a coffee lover..

Actually, I have to confess:
I have automatics in both the Explorer and the F150 P/U. Like MrLars said, for towing in a city, Auto is the only way to go (stop and go that is...) but the car has a manual.

I have auto in my truck. It would be more diffcult to talk on the phone, take notes, drive.. AND shift. Neither of my boats are real heavy but it wouldn't be any fun going through town in a manual whilst towing. Rush hour traffic in a stick....yuck! I don't drink coffee, either. I don't feel gay though. Hmmmm.
-
MrLars; the comment was tongue in cheek and ironic (referring to the |337 d00dz in games who call everyone gay). I tend to think it's obvious when I'm serious by experience has proven me wrong. I'll add a smiley next time.
Majjic, I just find automatics dull and boring.Sure they might be great in heavy traffic (not much of that here) and very useful, but they're dull.
I want performance and fun. Functionality in this respect will be more important when I turn 40 and have a more regular life with more regular needs I guess.

My Dad drove 18 Wheelers and that was what I learned to drive on. A 1968 Kenworth, 318 Detroit with a 4x4 transmission. Now 4x4 does not mean 4 wheel drive, it means dual 4 speed transmissions (2 sticks!)...16 forward gears and 4 reverse gears. He also made me learn to back a trailer before learning to drive forward. Dad was a SOB, but it cracks me up to watch people try to back trailers while looking thru the rear window and not using their outside mirrors.
Quick tip on backing, put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel and move your hand the way you want the trailer to go.
-
For kids learning to drive, Stick absolutely. They have to pay attention to their driving much more than with an auto, as it is nigh on impossible to do anyting but shift and drive. I choose late 80's early 90s Volvos for this.
For those of us who are, ahem,..... more mature, driving in, around and to cities, I vote auto even for and maybe expecially when towiing. If it's off road or a tractor pull and then I go back to the stick.
:D

If you ever want a good laugh, just go to any local boat launch and watch folks back up their trailers...maybe its just this state, but MY GOD people are brainless when it comes to backing up trailers.

MANUAL
I believe the number one cause of traffic is the invention of the automatic transmission. Dumb-arse morons haven't a clue on proper gas/brake usage! "Gas..to much gas...BRAKE HARD...gas...to much gas...BRAKE HARD":p

funked... what more do you need? Steve and rip both drive autos.
certainly people towed things with a stick shift before.
I will admit tho... the more boring a car is the more one is tempted to get it in auto shift and the more you will be concerned with what kind of radio /sound system it has.

Real cars are manual.
And F1 style paddle shift is for girls. :)

At my favorite ski lake I recover my boat early just to watch the boozin' boaters try to recover their craft....some locals have olympic style score card signs they use to rate the recovery....lots of good entertainment at the ramp especialy at dusk.

How many boat trailers do you see on the side of the road with 1 wheel gone? Dont have to know how to use em or take care of em. :)

Or how many poor trucks back up too far and go glug glug glug

Just this last weekend a guys completely sunk his van while launching his boat lmao. It was completely submurged!!

Manuals are a blatant cry of wanting to hold something phallic, ie, its either the cry of homosexuality or a subconsious admission of having a small weenie.

2002 WRX (weekend fun), manual of course!
2003 Aerio SX (daily commuter, almost as much fun as WRX), again, manual of course!
1996 Dodge Caravan, automatic (wife has to drive something).
My regards,

Manual of course.
I'm still having all my hands and legs and I'm also under 40y :)
-
I like manuals too, makes the drive more interesting. However... sometimes you can't get what you want with a manual. I drive a F150 SuperCrew King Ranch edition and could only get an automatic. It has taken me almost a year to get used to it :)
-
One of the best and I do mean nicest gearboxes I've ever had the pleasure of shifting in an automobile is the 6speed on the Honda NS2000. Very nice looking car, very smooth engine and exceptional gearbox.
:)
Honda engines are great but their gearboxes have never been that spectacular (in terms of feel) cept the NS.
-
So, all you manual transmission snobs, do you use a crank to start it and your tie to wipe the windsheield, too?
Traffic, Son, Traffic-that is why they invented Auto, thank Cod.
I have pulled out plenty super-duper 4x4 manual transmission'ed trucks from the mud in my simple Auto, too.

I got to drive a bad bellybutton manual one time up in Virginia. It was a Roadrunner (older model) and had a Hurst shifter with a pistol grip handle.:D
That car was fast, but I never drove it fast. The owner was a coal miner, and let me drive it when he got too drunk to drive one time. I drove it slow, because we ran outta gas and had to nurse it home on a cupfull of gas poured in the carb. We made it, about 5 miles.:)

Currently I have a manual transmission in the daily driver. It's tough to drink coffee and drive in city traffic. I'll go for the auto in the next car/truck.

it wouldn't matter if my cars had an auto or a stick so far as drinking coffee goes. to my knowledge, no one that knows me has ever even tried to drink coffee in one of my cars while I was driving.

Bah I've been driving stick for years, then for a few months automatic and then I drove stick for a trip.
I'm telling you, stick is overrated.

Hmmmm...exhibition of speed is what they call that. Tell me, are you in complete control of your vehicle when those tires are spinning? What if you broke an axle while doing it?
-
I can slide my car all over the road and still be in control of it. What good is a RWD car and a 5 speed if you can't play Gran Turismo on the back roads? :D The day a nice burn-out or fishtail doesn't bring a big smile to my face is the day they can put me in the nursing home.
-
Actually you can do all that fishtailing and spinning with an automatic too. Just need the right torque converter (fairly high stall speed for low powered cars) .
I never thought of driving a manual transmissioned automobile as being particularly "macho". I just enjoyed the experience of it. To be smooth with a manual requires a lot of practice and familiarity with the vehicle you're driving. I like to downshift before entering a turn at any speed, etc.
Each to his own though, some don't care for it and that's cool too:).
-
50-50.
I have no axe to grind either way. Both my V6 Golfs have been manual - 5-speed in the VR6, and 6-speed in my current 4-motion. I think the manual is more suited to the Golf driving style.
But if I were getting a car like the Jaguar XJ8, then definitely auto. You don't want to be buggering about with gears in a luxury car like that. Rolls Royce knows this - they never made a manual car.
The only auto I've owned in the UK was the Toyota Supra 3.0i turbo. Toyota quoted identical performance and fuel consumption stats for both auto and manual. I kept the Supra in France for about 3 months when I was out there - a great car for pissing off the French. ;)
Manual with overdrive was fun too - had a couple of those in the 70s.
Lazs won't let me drive his El Camino - says the clutch would be too heavy for me. Oh well, I'll just have to sit in the passenger seat drinking coffee. Does it have cup holders? Hehe, if I spill the hot coffee over myself, I'll be able to sue Starbucks.
-
Smoking and drinking coffee while shifting the cogs is twice as difficult.

Although when you buy $1,000 cars at auctions, you can't always be so choosy. The minivan that I just bought is an auto, my cars have always been manual, however.

You are right. The early ones did have manual gears of course. In fact that might have continued as late as the Rolls Royce Phantom IV, of which only 16 were built. One thing I remember about Bentleys (closely related to RR) was that the clutch pedal was in the middle instead of being on the left. I saw one here not long ago, and it was right hand drive with the gear shift on the driver's right, next to the door... I believe the earlier clutch pedal placement was to allow the driver to brake with the left foot, and use the right foot to blip the throttle as part of double declutching when changing DOWN a gear. (Non synchromesh gearbox) When the clutch and brake pedal positions were reversed, "heel and toe" double declutching became the norm.
I don't think RR or Bentley have made a manual since the mid 1950s or earlier.

Auto for me, cause I got a bum knee. The clutch aggrevates the injury. My wife drives a stick, every now and again I drive it. Plus when you live in DC auto is so much better than going first - second, stop, back first then second, stop. In 30 seconds ...
-
beetle... the early rolls and bentley's were "sports cars" they even had supercharged models.. when they got away from the performance image they went to the slushboxes. Early jag sedans were also "sporty" with 4 speeds.
I was a little different on the auto deal... Never liked em much but some were kinda fun if you had enough torque..
liked sticks in the big heavy dodges like 68 chargers.. I woulda had a stick in a lincoln if I coulda.
vulcan... of course you are. thank you for sharing.

manual, only auto i have ever driven was a Jaguar XJS, seemed weird not having a clutch pedal. I have only had a driving license for 2 and a half years or so though because you have to be 17 to drive here, I learned to drive on a manual.
