Iran says they need Nuclear power for energy, despite the fact that they are sitting on some of the largest oil reserves in the world. Iran says nuclear power will only be used for peacful purposes.
Flash back to North Korea. Korea says it needs a nuclear reactor to generate power and will only use it for peaceful uses. Now N. Korea is telling us they are building nuclear weapons and threatening nuclear holocaust.
Does anyone believe that Iran has such a lack of energy that they need a nuclear plant? Should the world allow Iran to develope a nuclear plant?
-
Who are we to tell them they can't? You can't go around the world telling people what they can and can't do, that will wear thin real quick.

If they build it, the Mossad will come! Just like they did at Osirak!

Well Pakistan is a Muslim nation who already have nukes - going to invade them as well?
Perhaps it would be quicker and easier if you could just list who you're NOT going to invade over the next 2 year period?
-
Does Pakistan espouse the destruction of Israel?

Did you miss the part in my post that asked "Should the world allow Iran to develope a nuclear plant?"?

If that's the basis on which invasion is going to be decided better get the draft going real soon - going to be a busy couple of years.
Always wondered why Americans allow Israel to yank their chain so much - Israel spied on you, killed your sailors, stole secrets from you, perhaps even stole from your reactors if one is to beleive some stories, you pay for their army, support their economy which would collapse without you and you fight their wars for them - damn fine deal if you ask me.
-
This is a clear example of why a country will adopt a preemptive strike policy.

I'm curious...why do you think our foreign policy should be tied to the protection of Israel?

No we shouldnt. There are fanatic muslim forces in the Iran one cant trust. But when i say no i dont mean to accoomplish this by invading Iran.

IIRC There are basically two types of nuclear fuel for powerplants. High grade enriched uranium (which can be used for weapons) or low grade enriched uranium (which cannot be used for weapons).
As long as the Iranians get only the low grade type of fuel, no biggie.
-
I think the question should be, where are they going to put all the spent fuel?

Actually a "Osirak" type strike wouldn't be an option in Iran as Iran's Nuclear facilities bear no comparison to Iraq's in 1981.
There are two sites, near the cities of Natanz and Arak south of Tehran which are already producing enriched uranium or plutonium.
So an air strike which worked very well against Osirak. In Iran would only risk creating a Chernobyl type disaster for the entire Region.

World? Which world?

Good point.
I'll say the UN . If the UN unanimously decided that it was too dangerous to allow Iran to developde nuclear capabilites, what do you think should be done if Iran ignored the UN and kept building anyway?
Do we stay out of Iran's affairs at the risk of nuclear weapons ending up in the hands an unstable government of extremist clerics, or do we at some point say that we need to pre-emp the threat and gaurantee they will not get nukes?
When I say "we" I mean the rational free world. This excludes China and North Korea IMO.
-
I say we build a missile defense and keep it to ourselves or our good friends. Then when N.K. and whoever starts testing nukes. and delivery systems others can worry.
When is the rest of the world going to understand the ramifications of nuclear blackmail. What do you think it will be like when the next country wants back its claimed land from a thousand years ago and they have these weapons.
How about a revolution of fanatics that have a death wish and now control a bunch of atomic weapons. This has happened and will continue to happen all over the world.
Europe has had in the last 100 years more upheaval the any area on the planet, yet you guys seem to think things will never change and peace through good will and happiness can prevail. Well good luck and have fun when the crap hits the fan in your backyard.
Or is it ok with the UN if we gust start selling our stockpiles to every one who can pay for them. How would Russia feel if we start arming the Checnieans with WMD? Is there any question as to them using them on Russia?
There is no question that with the attitudes on this board there WILL be a bunch of mushroom clouds in the near future.
There is so much shortsightedness on the subject it boggles my mind.
I have no question as the development and use of atomic warfare coming to a country near you and soon.
Europe needs to wake up, as you guys live in a damn small and unruly neighborhood or do you think the good old US of A is going to take care of you because the UN asked us to?
-

lol NUKE, so YOU get to select who will be part of the world and who wouldn't?
trying to prevent countries from getting/building nuclear weapons is hypocritical when it come from countries that have them (and actually used them).
YET, there is justice and there is reason - and sometimes these two collide. Then it's just a matter of what is more important to you - justice or personal(national) interest. The world is not "fair", but disregarding justice leads you on a dangerous path to become the evil-guy in the story.
conclution: "right" and "wrong" is neither objective nor well defined in the logical sense, therefor you can go on arguing about it forever till some dude-in-power will decide, for obscure reasons, to do this or that.

You'll be more likely to get one set off in your neck of the woods than I would be...no concern for terrorists gaining access or do you think it's below them to kill that many of us at one time?

Are you saying that the british goverment is stable atm, or the US for that matter :D?

I think the US military in the region has the key to that lock box since our post 9/11 visit.

about the nukes...
why would the us, china, and russia + the rest need more than lets say 5 nukes each? its plenty to destroy the world anyway and a credible threat to anyone.
At least remove all nukes from subs, planes and ships, in case of a serious accident they will destroy the enviroment, and it will prolly not be their own neigborhood that they destroy.
Before i joined the navy i had belived that the policy of "no nukes on norwegian territory" ment something, but after beeing on excersises and on board lots of us ships and subs at our main naval base i learned that that is not the case. Just imagine what would happen if one of those nucklear powered attack subs had an accident "dont tell me that that can't happen" of our coast. Our enitre fishery industry and oil business would crumble (not to mention tourism and LIVES, and for what???
(never mind the typing, im drinking..... yes its monday, but summer vaication and im inb the clubs soon :D)
