Ah.. no captions...

#1. Fairchild PT-19

#2. "Tora, Tora, Tora" movie T-6/Zero

#3. View from the seat of Reg Urschler's P-51. The instrument panel is basically over your kneecaps, so the front glass is very close. I had forgotten how "tight" and close a -51 cockpit is.

#4. Reg's "Gunfighter"

More tomorrow night maybe. There's a real nice T-28 here. Our F4F was downed with a mechanical though. Was really looking forward to getting in that one! Should be in next year though.

Thanks Saw for the web space!

Hey Toad, is the first your plane?

Nexx, yes, #33. But I'm selling it :(  It's a done deal.

Here's some more. Took a bunch today. Also got up to Lawrence, Kansas. They're doing a Bob Dole building dedication at the University with a WW2 flyover. Some nice hardware at Lawrence. On static display tomorrow too........

Thanks again Saw!

Formation liftoff with the Tora plane.

On the way to Lawrence.

Of course, we had to exercise the muscles a bit.

First H I've seen "in the flesh", at Lawrence. My dad flew one of these from Hunter Army Airfield (Savannah) to Nadzab, New Guinea as a Lt.

The Tuskeegee "C" model at Lawrence. Got to meet, thank and shake the hand of two Tuskegee airmen today. :)

More later, if you guys want to see them. I probably took 50-60 over the weekend. Need to cull them to get rid of the poor ones.

Why that's the noble visage of a dedicated worker that's spent the day flipping burgers out in the hot sun so that airshow patrons will have enough sustenance to see the entire show without starving. The straw hat helps avoid sunstroke and the borg look is just a camera held close to the handsome face.

;)

Want to see what I consider a really excellent shot of me?

Tora again.

TBM front view.

The owner/pilot told me that all the old gunners they've met at the TBM reunions/airshows had hearing aids in both ears.

Why am I not surprised?

Tango, that Tora bird belongs to Doug Jackson, it's not mine at all. I'm the guy taking the pictures from the other aircraft. Doug usually comes to our little open house/airshow. Ya gotta have the opposing team on the field to interest the folks.

I took some shots of the Tora bird and Gunfighter making low passes chasing each other. Haven't had time to review to see if any came out decently. Will try to do that tonight. I also have a nice TBM side shot and two B-17 sides, Thunderbird and Memphis Belle that should have come out.

Check back later.

What Toad isn't telling you is that all the bad photos he's having to cut out are the ones I took!

But I can attest to Toad's hamburger flipping abilities!!

Glad you got to go up in the Mustang Toad!

My boys and I had a blast, thanks for letting us know about it!

Reallllllly nice TBM out of Houston/Hooks.

The Belle.. well, the paint job anyway. Didn't get to talk to these guys, don't know where they're from.

I've been shrinking these 50% to save space on Saw's site (THANKS AGAIN SAW!) and time on the BBS d/l. If any of you want any of these, I'll send you the full files.

Told ya the 51 cockpit wasn't all that roomy. Knees at instrument panel, throttle over thigh... better than most of 'em probably!

Just a fun pic. Urschler in the 51 "smoking" Jackson in the Tora 6 over a beautifully restored scout car sitting next to a Stearman. Enjoy.

I should also post one of Doug smoking Reg's plane for fairness, I guess. But... haven't come across one yet.

This probably what Stringer looked like as a kid too. After all, these are his kids! But he never got to stand near a really nice T-6 in Kansas ANG paint.

A few more.. been through most of them now. Some would have been nice but have problems with movement or something.

This is my brother's BT-13.It's for sale, BTW, if you know someone who's looking.

A view from where the 85 gallon fuselage tank and a bunch of radios used to sit. Now people can sit in there but it's single control. Just thought this was interesting. The camera is approximately 18"-24" (Note to MiniD, I did not actually measure it with a ruler; I was going to say "a couple of feet" ;)) behind the normal pilot's head position. Note the great visibility all round.

Stearman owned by a HOA Wing member.

This one's just a pretty shot, I think.

HTC gets it pretty dang close, don't they?

This is looking down a Mustang wing ~3-5K AGL over the Kansas farmland. (There's no instrumentation in the back seat and I was taking a picture, not leaning over his shoulder!) Do this in the game, I'm surprised at just how well they've done considering I'm playing on a $1000 puter/monitor setup.

"This is your Captain speaking. We've just turn ON the Vultch Light..."  Pulling a closed at Lawrence. These aircraft were in for the Bob Dole dedication at KU.

Tora coming hard up our 5 O'clock. His problem was he couldn't follow us up. Same problem in the MA, usually. Once again, I'm just amazed how well HTC gets this picture.

Well, that's the best of them. Hope you enjoyed them. If anyone wants a pic, let me know.

Camo, I'd be purely guessing here. I had a camera pressed to my face and sometimes I was "zooming" in and out, because sometimes we were REAL close.

But trying to recall that part of the dance, we had rolled in on him and came across his 7-8 o'clock and then took it into the vertical while rolling slightly back towards him. He had dodged right on our pass and then reversed and tried to bring the nose up but we were going up in a big hurry.

I'd have to put him around 4-500 yards here, slant range. But I could be off; he looks a little blurry so he might be farther away and just zoomed in. Or, that could be the camera moving under the G load.

We did let him get on our six towards the end so he wouldn't feel totally B&Z'd and I *thought* I got a shot looking nearly straight back over our empenage at him head-on about 200 yards. I know I pushed the button but the picture is not on the chip. It was a GREAT shot.. I have this blurred out gray one that I think is it. I think I had the lens too low and got a shot of the interior fabric below the trailing edge of the canopy. :(  But, it was tough to  completely 180 in the jump seat while strapped in. It's pretty cosy back there.

I know most of ya's will pity me when I tell you how tough this job was. But, I'm willing to sacrifice for you guys if the chance ever comes again.  ;)

BTW, Funked... I do know a guy at Half Moon Bay that might be induced to give T6 rides for reasonable amounts of money.....

He also is the wrench for Eddie Andreini's Yak and Stearman. There's also a totally nice Ryan PT-22 on the field.

Fire, they're for anyone who wants them.

They've all been shrunk at least 50% and some have been clipped. If you want any of the originals, let me know, I'll e-mail them to you.

Grun:

Eddie is a great guy. His wife is a top-notch person as well and s superb cook. Grun, if you get a chance go to "Dream Machines" at HMB in April. Get with Eddie a week or two early and offer to "work the show and help with the planes and stuff". You'll find it most rewarding, especially if you get invited to the pilot dinner on Friday night. You'll probably be able to wangle a ride in somebody's warbird out of it.  ;)

Great pics Toad!

The hollowed out space behind the pilot in the pony reminded me of a story my Dad told me years ago. He had a friend that bought a pony shortly after the war when they were selling them for $5K each.

Anyhow, he gave my Dad a ride in the early '50s around White Rock lake in Dallas, used to be an airfield there, and while doing a dive (Dad said they hit 500kts) steam started pouring from the engine. They managed to land just before the engine seized. Dad said his buddy was able to patch the cracked block and pawn it off on someone for what he paid for it, $5K. Bet he was kicking himself a few years later.

Maybe because the "Zero" was a T-6 with a Pratt 1340 and only 600 horsepower? As the "big block" guys say in the O-Club car threads.. there's no substitute for horsepower.

Not quite a grandfather yet... I'm kinda looking forward to that in the next few years though. Bar fightin' days are pretty much over though. I prefer trickery now. Buy them drinks until they're too drunk and THEN hit them over the head with an bottle.  ;)

OSSIE: The link didn't work for me, but I'd like to see it. Can you post it on Saw's site?

You didn't get the "wink wink nudge nudge" row of smiles? I was joking, everybody wants to see the good guys win. :)

So it's true like they say, old age and trickery ... ;)

Nah, I got it. I was actually wishing Doug did have more horsepower. The way it went was sorta like a G-10 working over a P-40 with ord on it in the MA. Only Doug didn't have as much "oomph" as the P-40......   ;)

Well, like an old mule, hit me with a 2x4 board often enough, I learn to duck.

My nose hasn't been quite straight for a long time; the repeated "adjustments" only made it worse, I fear.  ;)

Slap, I think there pretty much has to be.

The XF-86 was first flown Oct. 1, 1947. In December, North American leased the Downey plant to build the T-28 trainer and a few other models. The T-28's first flight was September 24, 1949.

So, when they were building the F-86, they were designing the T-28. No doubt there was some crossover of people so that some worked on both and there's always a tendency to use "off the shelf" stuff that will work.

Those guys at the Lone Star Flight Museum in Galveston arent a good bunch....they are a great bunch.  Back when I lived in Houston a couple of years ago I had the responsibility of going out to Galveston once a month to count some Hewlett Packard inventory at the UT hospital there.  It always took me 2 hrs longer than normal to count that stuff because I always seemed to get distracted by the flight museum on my way back to Houston.  :)

I was signed up to go through orientation to be a volunteer there on weekends but it never panned out.  My sister decided to tell me she was selling her house a week before I was scheduled to start it and I had to drop out of the program due to the fact that I knew that I couldnt afford to stay in Houston in my own place.  Hell I could barely afford rent in my sister's house.  :)

Got to see Thunderbird on numerous occassions from really up close.  I also got to climb around in the cockpit of their P47....Tarheel Hal once.  I need to get over to Cavanaugh more often here in Addison and see what kind of volunteer program they have going but I never seem to find the time.  :(
