Title: WRX Sti
Post by: GtoRA2 on July 21, 2003, 12:46:58 PM
Man! What a car lol

My buddy just got one and let me drive it! Nutty.

Talk about getting pinned to the seat!

32 grand out the door and no Radio, but it was nutty fast, would eat my current GTO for breakfast and come back for seconds hehe.

Yeah I'm kinda stretching my budget with my current car and the STi is $10k more.  I can mod my car to be about as fast as an STi for about $3k so I doubt I will ever own one, until I win the lottery.  :)

Ok, I'll bite...what's an STi  ?

It's the car that my car is a wannabe version of.  It's the car that Subaru builds for homologation purposes for FIA rallying.  Homologation is something they do to force race cars to be production based cars.  If you want to race the car you have to build 5,000 of them or so which are almost identical to the race car.  The rules have changed a bit but Subaru still builds the car.

It's an Impreza sedan with an aluminum hood, composite wing, 300 hp turbo engine with variable valve timing and water injection, limited slip front and rear differentials, active center diff, gigantic brakes, extremely stiff suspension, etc.  0-60 in about 4.5 and 1/4 mile in about 13 sec.  No radio, no A/C, etc.  Mitsubishi makes a similar car called the Lancer Evo.

That and he has the dinki 2.0L 4 instead of the massive 2.5L monster...hehehe

Yeah the 2.0l engine is per FIA regulations.  They actually had to sleeve the 2.5 down to 2.0.  They already sell enough of the 2.0 version overseas to meet homologation requirements, so they put a 2.5 in the US version of the STi.  They just introduced a detuned version of the 2.5 turbo in the Forester XT, and I think we'll see this engine in the standard WRX soon.

One mod on what Funked said.

This one had AC, I thought the was funny considering it was a radio delete car, like the radio saves more pounds then the AC system?

But still cars with no A/C suck.

I can live without tunes - the engine should sound good enough for easy listening pleasure - but I need my A/C to defrost the windows for those 95-degree afternoon thunderstorms.

Yeah Go.. now that I have the intake and exhaust done.. I find I leave the radio off..but then at 80mph it's hard to hear over the wind...

Yeah I've been driving around with the windows down ever since I got a Prodrive exhaust.  :)

The center differential directs 35 percent of engine power to the front wheels and 65 percent to the rear when in Automatic mode, but a Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) feature (not found on the European-sold STi models) allows drivers to vary that amount by turning a small "wheel" located on the center console.

Wow, isn't this a switch, something offered in the U.S. as an option but not in Europe!

4.8 sec. to 60mph is G-force factor fun.  I'd hate to commute in this car though:eek:

STI is an awesome car, I have been debating about picking one up. Perhaps next year after the new engine has had a decent shakedown.

It eats pretty much everything for lunch I have seen quarter miles numbers under 12.5 secs (stock). To my knowledge that beats all Porsches except the Turbo, Mustangs, Vettes...you get the point. No radio, but it has AC (thank god), so I will wait and watch.

one good thing about not being 20 yrs old anymore is you have no need to get to 60MPH in 4.5 sec.

They're nice cars, but I could never own one....costs too much to insure (IF an insurance company would give me coverage), and I'd always be worried some salamander was stealing it!

Mind you, all those aside, it is a nice car...

Nice car Mitsu.  I remember a few years ago going 85 mph in downtown Nicosia in one of those.  (Uh... that's the capital, urban terrain, and it was about 6pm.  Impressed/scared the hell out of me.)

Mitsu you should know they are now selling a version of your Forester in the US with the 2.5 liter engine from the US WRX STi.  :D

Me too Tronski - an Impreza Turbo 2000 is cheap enough to buy over here, there are loads of them for sale. But insurance costs for someone of my age are astronomical. I'll have to build a large no claims bonus before I get one. :)

200SX 1.8 liter engine 170hp Turbo. Its similiar to the 240 hatchback they sell in the states. Only we dont have the crappy 2.4 engine :)

People steal them for ram raiding here, so the insurance costs are astronomical. Subaru were offering to pay for a years worth of insurance for a new impreza not so long ago to boost sales...

Haven't seen a "radio delete" plate since my buddies '66 427 vette roadster.

I don't have a radio in either of my cars either tho.  The elky is allmost quiet enough but I like the sound of the motor and tranny.
