Title: Equilibrium – No play at the theaters and only on DVD?
Post by: Zippatuh on July 23, 2003, 02:54:47 PM
I’m not sure how many of you have seen this flick probably due to the fact that it wasn’t released to very many theaters.  I heard about it from a coworker and tried to track it down at the video store to find it’s only available on DVD.  Yeah, I know, I need to buy a DVD player but I’m cheap.

So it comes out on cable pay-per-view and I rented it.  Not really any big names but a few people I recognized and overall I thought it was a good storyline.

Several years in the future after the third world war and all emotional expression has been outlawed to prevent yet another war.  Everyone has to take an emotional suppressant and sensory offenders are dealt with severely, death.

They developed a whole other martial art based on handgun combat to which I think they did a great job.  Graphics were good, acting was decent, the choreography was done well, and like I said I really thought it was a good line.

So why no theater time?  Too much like the Matrix?  Has my taste in movies really dropped that bad?  Anyone else seen it that might venture a guess?

DVD Players here are like $50US for entry level ones? Surely you can afford that?

Yeah but every time I go look at them I end up in the home theater section eyeing the Sony set up.  That’s about $500.

My wife has been buying me DVD’s now for the last year or two and quit with the VHS movies all together.  She’s been trying very hard for me to take a hint :).

Zip
My 50 buck apex DVD player is still working after 2 years, my 300 $ buck sony one, lasted less then two before it died, and unless you need component out or progresive scan(most tv do not support it) there is no reason to go with the higher dollar DVD players

Hell my sony wouldnt even play DVD-rs or SVCD or MP3 cds, or VCDs... lol the 50 buck one did it all and still does.

I will not touch another sony DVD player. Everyone one of my friends has problems with theirs either them outright dying, or AV SYNC probs right out of the box.

$50 apex - plays everything - even has 5.1 sound out

$50 - can you take a family of four to the movies cheaper?

I’ve heard about the Apex before from someone else at work who ribs me about not having one.  Seems that a few people seem to like it.

I also understand that it will play the pirated DVD’s as well.

Apex DVD players...good for being cheap.  Suck bellybutton compared to decent players.  At least that's my experience with my friend's Apex - what a turd.  Still better than ANY VCR tho'.  Hell, get an Apex to use while you save for a better one - and if you think it's good enough for what you use it for, then keep it!

Been using my Sony since '98 (S7000) and haven't had a single problem.  Purchased a lower-end used Sony a year ago so I could use it to play burned DVD's...no problems yet, but I don't use it all that often either.

The "Gun Kata" expertise was pretty cool if the underlying theory was kinda warped.  And I thought the lead was a good actor tho the kid who plays his son did steal a scene or two.

Give it a six.
