Title: An end to base capture.... maybe
Post by: Furious on July 23, 2003, 07:07:10 PM
I'll throw out another useless idea.

End base capture as we know it.  Instead divide the map up in to small, about the size of a current sector, sections.  I will call these sections Areas of Influence or AoI's for short.

In each AoI is 2 to 3 AF's and in the center of the AoI is a large town with a maproom that is capturable.  Whoever owns the town owns all fields in the AoI.

Some fancy footwork would be required to make the AoI's lay out logically and fairly, but this method would move the fights, for the most part, away from the fields to some point equidistant to all enemy combatants.

I don't understand it, therefore it must be the stupidest idea ever. Damn you're dumb Furburger.

I'd like to make a couple suggestions for alternatives to base capture.

Instead of winning war through land grabbing, win it through the destruction of a country's resources. Like refineries, factories, transportation, food, etc... like ion the real war. When these resources reach a certain level of attrition, the country surrenders and the war is won. Though bases can't be captured, they can be destroyed and their rate of repair affected by the country's level of resources. I think this is more realistic and will allow a country to retain bases for continued playing up to the end. And the bombers will once again become a weapon of value.

Another, if base capture can't be eliminated, at least divide the arena into areas where capture is allowed and the war one in that area alone, and other areas left intact for those who wish to fight each other for a base or two. This way the land grabbers can do battle with real estate without messing the place up for the aerial combat enthusiats.

In the early days of AirWarrior we had neutral bases that could be captured, (usually for their strategic value) and country bases could be destroyed for a half hour, but not captured. This allowed players to do battle all night without complete ruination of the arena. It worked quite well.

My displeasure with what we have now is due to encouragement for players to capture bases by any means available (like massive swarms, suicide jabos, and avoiding combat by attacking undefended bases), and disruption to players who don't wish to have any part in the land grab hampster wheel.

You 'air combat enthusiasts' whine a lot.

You could do something like this now. You could create a Main field with satellite air strips (runways with ac entry points). You would "spawn" from the main field out to these "airstrips" kinda like gvs but instead they are fighter entry points that start on a runway object. Then customize a town and attach remote villages out and about the sector so that they will need to be killed (since they are apart of the town and all town objects need to be killed for a capture).

You could disperse the fuel ammo barrack etc out as well. So in stead of everything being in one confined spot the whole sector is a battle field. With the satellite fields the fight could be moved closer. Also bombers could only spawn at the main field (no bomber entry points).

Instead of 50 guys flying into the ground at one spot you spread out the target area where to take 1 base they could crash into a different piece of ground 50 times in a row.

Its a little different then whatyou had in mind but would work. Just the number of objects on the map could skyrocket. The map dl would be big and the low end guys would take an fps hit.
