Title: Chaser - Anti hangover?
Post by: Octavius on July 23, 2003, 09:38:26 PM
I just saw a commercial for this stuff.

http://www.doublechaser.com/

They *say* all ya do is take it when you start drinking and it "absorbs" toxins.

There are two cheap alternatives:  1)  Don't drink and 2) Drink a chitload of water before sleep / passing out :)

My method:

Before going to bed, drink as much water as you can, on waking up put some mineral tablets into a normal glass of multivitamin juice, add an aspirin and gulp it down. Then drink a beer.

What I drink has a lot to do with the severity of my hangovers.

Whisky hangovers are the worst imho, because whisky contains fusil oil...a poison inherent to all whisky, and cannot be distilled out completely.  Double stilled whiskeys like JD and George Dickle probably get most of it out.  Not blends, but pure corn squeezin's, i.e. Tennessee Whisky.

Red wine Burgundy, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, don't deliver too bad a hangover, and are probably good for you if you are staying home.:)

I've found sleep to be the only way to get rid of a hangover completely.  Lots of water, orange juice, tomato juice according to preference.   Sometimes chocolate milk is pretty good.

Hair of the dog only gets me started again.

It's a good idea to eat a nice meal beforehand.:D

Do no take a bunch of Tylenol or similar medicine.  Combined with the alcohol it can destroy your liver very quickly.  Not a pleasant way to die.
I find that drinking water until I start pissing will cure it real quick.  Then get some food and coffee.

I find that it also helps to lay down on the cold bathroom tile floor next to the toilet ... for some reason it makes the room spin a little bit slower...

Oh yes, the spins, I remember them well.  They're usually newbie drinker occurrences...the first few years of drinking to intoxication, they were quite frequent.  Haven't had those in 25 years.

Damn, I went to a (drinking) party one time at 16, and haven't stopped since.  Life has been one long 31 year party for me.

ETOH (alcohol) is a diuretic (makes you pee)  WHen you drink enough to get real drunk you end up getting rid of too much water and electrolytes (na+, k+, ca).  Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance is what causes a hang over.  The only real cure is lots of fluids (with no caffeen, also a diuretic) some advil, and some multivites (sports drinks work real well).  Good to go.  Or you can sneek a few iv bags and iv supplies home and give your self a liter or 2 of saline.

My brother used to drink "California martinis" - 7UP and vodka.  He died 3 years ago from cirrosis of the liver at the age of 62.  :(

He was a functional alcoholic.  Chief of the Propulsion Division at NASA in Huntsville for about 10 years.  Before that he was Head of the Physics Dept.  at MSFC.  He started with NASA in 1960, when he graduated from Auburn U. as an Ensign in the Navy, and went on his shakedown cruise on the cruiser  U.S.S. Los Angeles in 1962.  He joined NASA about then and had stayed with them for about 37 years.

As an ex-bartender/Bar manager, I highly recommend a tall glass of Bitters and club soda, 16 oz. minimum.  About 10-20 shakes of bitters.  Call me and thank me next time you're hung and decide to take my advice.

Super big-gulp of diet coke, a couple of snappy toms and a big dill pickle.  Gets the cat **** out of your mouth, replaces all needed fluids and makes you hungry to boot.

Grease + hangover = my friend.

Of course, If I am ever hung over, it's my fault for not pushing the fluids... or i was just too blasted to think of drinking the water.

Anyway, I a nice big fat greasey burger or a Denny's Lumberjack Slam is awesome.  Or if I manage to stumble home, Macaroni and Cheese is extremely satisfying around 3 am.

Snappy Tom is the absolute best drink in the Universe.:D   I'm surprised it's not more popular.  I would be willing to set up a Snappy Tom trade deal, if not too expensive.  Can you go .57 per can + S&H?

Mandrake. Mandrake, have you never wondered why I drink only distilled water, or rain water, and only pure-grain alcohol?

I tried this (http://www.aventispharma.co.uk/main/0,1003,EN-GB-30181-48521--,FF.html) once on the advice of a medical friend. Stayed down for about 3 seconds before coming straight back up. I'm a confirmed greasy breakfast guy now but need about 2 hours, dimmed lighting and no sudden movements.
