Title: AH2 - Attrition: the real strategical challenge
Post by: sparow on July 24, 2003, 05:12:50 PM
Hi all!

Heard about the new ideas surrounding AH2 - Tour of Duty and decided to drop a line. About attrition and plane model/version availability, rolling plane set and theatre of operations.
It would be interesting to model the evolution and introduction of new models or versions of aircraft in a time line as close as possible to historical conditions. For that, the arena should have a rolling plane set and this is not new. Also, this should be done at the same time that the number of aircraft produced of each model or version approached reality in due proportion. No more endless aircraft, only a finite number, proportional to those produced. More: they should be allocated in pre-determined numbers to each airfield, according to size of airfield and distance to front and entry into service. Even more: this should be linked with aircraft/vehicle factories and the supply sistem.
The arena idea is this: instead of having 1 Main Arena with terrains changing, we could have ETO, PTO and so on, each one with his own rolling plane set of his own.
All these changes would concur to develop a real need to land missions, defend/attack airfields, and have historically based fights between aircraft models.
If someone would like to see a Excel spreadsheet with some data on aircraft production numbers and a projection for a 21 day TOD, just say so and I will e-mail it.
Just my two cents,

Sparrow

The idea has merit, but isn't this what WWIIOL was suppsed to do?

Personally, I don't think I would like RPG that went a complete cycle in less than a month. I would love to see a war that goes somewhere and has meaningful targets and strategies. Base hopping with endless aircraft and supplies gets old fast these days. Been doing it for over 6 years now.

This is the deal as far as I see it. We get an MA with the new engine and a the new mission based historical ToD arena.

I don't want a RPS forced on me - I want somewhere where I can just furball with restriction - i.e. the MA.

There was this big explanation of why he doesnt want it, but he edited it to a much simpler version ;)

WW2OL does it, yes. But I think that it is interesting and could be done in AH2 also.
I like MA and furballing, nothing against it. But, like in CT, there must be a special arena where history and reality are more accurately depicted. Hence, the different arenas for different TO's, with historically correct planesets.
If it is a 21 day or a 3 month TOD, that it is not the issue here: the focus is on having a finite number of aircraft in a CV or an airfield.
If, according to my sources, there was a total production of Spitfires a little over 20000 units in RL, in a 21 TOD, you would have to manage with 970. And 1519 Bf109's, and 69 Me 262's and so on.
You surely would hate to watch a bomb destroy a fighter hangar and take, say, 10 fighters, away from active duty. And even more to loose all the fighters and bombers in a CV in a single strike or just because it sunk.
Free for all, crash, burn, take-off again ad infinitum is ok in MA but in a more demanding historical set-up there should be some limits.
And I'm a bit sceptical about RPG's...to say the least.
