Title: Download music LEGALLY!!
Post by: muckmaw on July 24, 2003, 06:46:59 PM
This is what we've been talking about on those long bellybutton threads...

Just saw the commercial, went to check it out.

300,000 songs, as low as .79 cents each.

I just downloaded Ataris' "Boys of summer".

Paid $1.14 for the track.

Check it out at http://www.buymusic.com

(For PC users.)

Think the RIAA figured it out yet?

It still suffers from the limited artists issue. The acid test for artist coverage is supposedly Metallica and Madonna (not my choices!). Sure enough it has stuff all from either.

On the positive side there is Pacifier on there (check out the Bulletproof track).

(oh yeah and I will buy the tracks here, just saying coverage isn't as hot as it could be).

Oops correction... No I won't:
"Can I buy music from outside the United States?
No. Due to licensing restrictions, BuyMusic.com content is available only to residents of the United States. "?

teh suk!

Are they in .mp3 format, or something new?

Yes it is fully legal and sponsored by the RIAA.  All files are in Windows Media or .WMA

So I assume you need Windows Media Player 9 (and its copy protection)?

I read recently that Metalica aren't gonna release their stuff to places like this, because they don't like the idea of people downloading just one song. It's an 'artistic' thing, where the album is intended to be a 'whole' experience. There were a few others that are taking the same stance (Lincon Park is another).

They will have to bend on this, I'm sure of it. I think if you follow things to their logical conclusion, the way music is released is going to change drastically. No longer will albums be made... people don't seem to want that. Instead, like is happening, singles will be released.

Why bother recording and releasing songs that aren't going to qualify as radio friendly singles? They won't be bought. They won't be downloaded. So bands won't go into the studio to make albums... They'll instead jump into the studio every time they think they have a single on their hands (when the A&R guy nods), quickly cut the track, release it to one of these download sites, and that's it. A buck a song and away you go.

It's total suckage.

Dumb shrecking listeners like some of you seem to be... the ones that whine "Whaaa I liked this one Christina Gagulara song I heard in my car, and when I bought the album there was all this....other stuff that I didn't like. What a waste of money!"

So you win... You get the happy catchy pop songs that radio adores, and won't be confronted with the other songs that you don't understand. Albums like Dark Side of the Moon and OK Computer are no longer going to get made. Why would they? Nobody's gonna download that obscure track #8.... so nobody is going to pay for that track to be recorded and distributed. Why would they? Just so happens though that those obscure tracks happen to MAKE an album what it is... But whatever...

This is my story and I'm sticking to it.

Or....... individual bands could bypass the distributors and sell their own music via web download.

So if you hear a great single by Nashingteeth, you might decide to sample the rest of their stuff at the website.

Maybe even getting entire albums for much less than what a CD costs now while the band gets more than they used to get by selling a CD.

Change will happen. Some of it will be for worse, some will be for better and it will take some time for it to shake out..

...and what about those albums that do truly suck, but have a good song or two on them?  Or, what if you don't like a particular band's sound, except for a song or two?  Why is that a bad thing?  This thing has a long way to go, and I don't think we can draw any conclusions about where it's headed just yet.  Also, you are gay.  Yep, just a big gay canuck who likes gravy and cheese curds on his french fries.  So, really, your opinion just doesn't matter.  :p

Well, I just downloaded Stop by Janes Addiction.  It says I can copy it to two other computers only.  So, does that mean that after two formats it's toast?

The files have some sort of embedded metatags. However, how hard is it to record a bunch to a CD then rip them off CD back to Mp3?

Nash, I believe good albums are the exception to the rule. With the rule being a good track or two with the remainder filled with 'fluff' to fatten things up.

I can't understand why I can't buy songs from there though (outside US) when I can order songs from places like Amazon (albeit on CD). Whats the difference?

Well, if my prediction is anywhere near correct, then you won't have the risk of that any longer. Of course, you won't have the really great albums any longer either.

And why? Because the 1 or 2 "good" songs are so important to some people that they absolutely must have them... but not important enough to shell out money for the entire album.

But... yeah... you win.

(btw., this whole 1-2 "good" songs thing. I can't remember buying an album where that's been the case in probably 10 years. Why? Because I don't listen to commercial radio. The bands I like don't put out radio crap + filler. My opinion is that it's these commercial-radio-top-40-listeners that are now driving the direction of how music is gonna get released. And it pisses me, and and folks like me who take music probably a lot more seriously than them, off.)

Right... And a scenario where you heard this neat song on the radio by one of them, then rushed out to buy the album only to be shocked and dismayed because you didn't like anything else on it... It's just not going to happen.

S'all I'm saying.

The way I see it is artist may end up making more money. For instance, I rarely buy CDs. I am one of those that refuse to pay for a CD with two songs I like. I listen to the radio. Now If I could download a song for a buck, I'd do that. I'm sure there are others like me out there. Besides, I don't like carrying a CD player around. Still too bulky. But digital music will change that. I'd definately pay for digital singles.

Ahh ok. Well check out the band steller*, her sisters lead vocals in it (Bo Runga), different style but great voice too.
