Yeah, I can see how this would be all their fault.
During the first special session, Senate Democrats were able to block a redistricting bill that could have given Republicans an additional seven seats. Eleven Democrats and one Republican stood firm against the bill.
Republicans are pressing for more seats in the state's 32-member delegation in the U.S. House; the Democrats currently hold a 17-15 advantage.
Ummm..if you have the advantage already and can kill a bill just by voting, wouldn't it make more sense to, ummm, stay and vote the bill dead? No? Makes too much sense?

Can you imagine the outcry and media attention (nationally) if the Repubs did this? Why, it'd be a media circus not unlike the OJ Simpson trial!

No but they ought to, then round up all the brain-washing University professors around the country and line them up too. That way our colleges aren't putting out young, dumb brain-washed-to-think-animals-have-more-rights-than-human students.

lol, learn what? That the sissy democrats run and hide when they don't get their way?
These guys run out of the state and hide rather than allow a vote to be held on the issue, they ought to be jailed.

A Republican Governor that won't take NO for an answer is the problem. He pushed for redistricting and it didn't pass in the Regular Session, so he calls for a Special Session and it still does not pass. If he doesn't get his party in the majority he will continue to call for Special Sessions untill he does. We could be doing this for years. :(

yea the first time that is how it was covered here in texas.
but then people read what it will mean to us in beaumont tx.
our representative will live in houston with the great majority of his vote there also. our guy now is in beaumont.
this time the radio and tv guys are talking about the big hurry to have special sessions to gerymander when economy tanked thanks george w. bush aka shrub belief in altered time accounting voodoo budget keeping. its put up or shut up time economy gets better or you go back in your holes for 30 years again ( or 150 in texas like last time)
carpetbagers.

It didnt pass because it wasnt voted on. It wasnt voted on because the democrats who ruled Texas with a iron hand for 130 years, left state so they wouldnt have to vote. Redistricting is a partisan event, its the republicans turn to gerrymander the lines and the Dems dont like payback.

question how many time have democrats redistricted on a non cencus year? i.e. gerymandering, in texas. the answer is none how come you accuse them of it? they are no angels but the knee jerk "they do it to" dosen't work here.
its a republican thing at least in texas. you know, like reconstruction.

The law in Texas has never ever said that redistricting must be done on a census year. Redistricting on census years didnt start in Texas untill after the 1964 ( i think it was 64 it might have been 67) Federal law making it illegal to pair districts (concentrate based on unequal numbers).
The party in power has always had the right to redistricing. For the first time in 130+ years it is the Republicans turn to redistrict. What the Texas democrats are trying to do is call foul over the census issue and hopefully run out the clock before the next election. They are betting that by election time they may be able to retake the state and avoid the issue all together.
It is not a Rep vs Dem thing it is the way it has always been and will always be unless the law is changed (and it wont be LOL) Both parties play this game. When the Democrats controlled Texas, they shaped the districts to their advantage. Now the Republicans are trying to do so.
BTW if your from Texas you have heard of the "dirty 30" it was a group of Democrats and Republicans who banded together to fight Speaker Gus Mutscher (D) over redistricting. They left town to avoid the issue and eventually lost out. Old Gus re-drew the districts to make sure the democrats who opposed him were put into districts together so they had to run against each other.

Dolf. At this point I think you best tactic would be to leave this thread for another thread in order to avoid the issue altogether.

Less than 2 million for a special session. BTW it was called to pass other bills besides redistricting because of all the bills that had to be put on hold from the last walkout. So technically its the Dems costing us money.
The House was controlled by the Democrats and the Senate by the Republicans (by one vote) up until last November. So saying that this (fiscal) mess was a Republican problem is not really accurate. To be fair its really neither party's fault that the economy slowed and revenue dropped. Hey we should be happy they passed a balanced budget considering we were what, 4.5 billion in the hole prior. A drop in the bucket compared to CA. :)
As far as holding onto power at any cost.. Pot-Kettle?
