Title: "The remaining six Hurricanes then tore into the 50 Heinkels and split them up"

Ripped from AGW, cos its a damn good read.

Low level attack during the BoB (http://www.battleofbritain.net/0028.html)

6 vs 50. Wow.

And:

"...To fend off any attacks made by these aircraft, the RAF had only 825 fighters which consisted of 520 Hurricanes and 258 Spitfires"

Thats not much more than the capacity of the MA. To save a nation, a way of life and ultimately the war.

There's a lot of pride in the RAF in Britain - and rightly so. It's just sometimes I forget about the actual numbers involved , and what would have happened if it had gone the other way.

I currently live in Germany and the similarities our two nations share surprise me every day.

As in: I hear German people have conversations around me, eventually translate it into English in my head and can easily hear them in brummie or newcastle accents :D

They're nice people.

Unless I am mistaken, BoB was the only time in WWII that a nation's air force successfully defended against a determined strategic air assault.  Am I missing something?

Guadalcanal, Moscow and Malta are not really campaigns against a nation; more in the nature of tactical battles.  Finland, perhaps, I'm not familiar with the nature of the Russian air assault (I thought they were mostly tactical ground support).

I'm thinking US v. Japanese home islands...US and England v. Germany...that sort of thing.
