A lot has been said about it lately. So......what trips your trigger and gets you totaly invovled in the sim? I mean to the point that it completely wipes out and overides those annoying distractions such as the ever so popular "Are you listening to me? " comments etc.:D

its an escape...

It's not very frequent, but there are three moments for me.
One of them is flying through a formation of bombers, and I mean a GOOD formation, not one of those messy usual formations. When there a few talented pilots together, sometimes they make this beautiful bomber formation looking very historical, and flying near them and watching them move together like a big, fat herd of cows, is very exciting.
The second, is looking at planes take off in the mission. Likewise, not those messy take-offs where everybody jams full throttle the moment they spawn, but when a close groupd of pilots call out "roll 1".. "roll 2" and one by one, I see their planes up in front of me.. and when the moment comes where it's my turn to roll, that's a very immersive moment. :)
The third, is attacking a train with an IL-2. I almost never survive from that(those train acks are tough!), and seeing a train is pretty rare anyway.. but in those rare moments where I get to meet a train in an IL-2.. and as you approach the steam engine compartment and let the cannons rip.. that always brings out a smile on my face.
-
Environmental effects, and the aircraft interacting with the environment..
i.e. wake when flying low on the water, dust on takeoff, birds killing my 262 engines and forcing me to ditch.. ;)
Fog is always nice.
Many, many many many many totally customizable loadout options..
-
Clearing a bogey off of jackals 6.... Thats just the best...
-
Jam.. topic.. on.. stay.
-
But that gets me into the sim..... Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy..

When your toodling along and run into a badguy. Then for the next four or five minutes you both experience the "fight" which can't be explained to someone that doesn't fly sims.
And it ends with a
Doesn't happen often. But when it does, the feeling of "it" stays with you and brings you back for more.

Good graphics that make you stop paying attention to anything..

Note the speed and alt, and the direction of travel... ;)

Time seems to compress on a bounce... the wind is howling... the target aircraft seems to inch closer and closer... all the while, I'm thinking, "Don't look back... almost there... don't look back!" My heart races... and then I kick of a few rounds as he fills my windscreen and I hope that he doesn't maneuver into me as I zoom past.
It's quite different than meeting someone head on... face to face... then there's no drama at all... we draw swords and leap into each other. Cold... hard... and calculating.

* Flying P-51 Escort Duty for DHBG in thier B-17's on tuesday evenings.

the "Jg367" runs are my fav, using 109's and/or 110's

Bose noise cancelling headphones :D

A Flying Zoo D-11 run. :D

Flying Nap Of the Earth (NOE) missions. Especially when flying over small hills and valleys with 20 other planes. Give me more of a sensation of speed.

I wish AH could utilize a separate output for voice, so we could put the engine noises on really huge speakers that makes the neigbours go mad, and the voice coms on ANR headphones :)

Here I am at work trying hard to remember something in AH that had an immersive quility to it... yet Slapshots animated Avatar two posts up from mine makes it absolutely impossible to think about anything sensible at all.
Guess I'll just sit here in front of the monitor and watch that loop untill someone tells me it's time to go home... :)

what do you think I've been doing since he posted :droooool:

Yea.Thats the ticket. When ya get into a prolonged 1 on 1 and just barely kill the guy knowing it could have just as easily been you.And he knows it too. That is the best one :) :)

Agree completely!
Here's another one.
Trying to land a wounded plane (or pilot) especially after a successful mission. Had this happen in one of the 1st friday TOD's I ever flew.
Bounced a Fw190 in my Jug, then got bounced. Had a wounded pilot and a way's to go to a friendly field. Blacking out, looking for enemy, getting a scort from a squadmate... it was awesome!

Think think think.... bounce bounce bounce..... Darn it !!!
Think think think.... bounce bounce bounce.....
Think think think.... bounce bounce bounce.....
Think think think.... bounce bounce bounce..... Ahhhh Heck i'll think of a reason later ....Bounce bounce bounce.
-
* NOE mission with your entire squad flying formation trying to get deep into enemy territory without being detected
* Being that lone hidden goonie praying your squaddies and extras are keeping every airborne bogie busy enough to not notice you sneaking over the city before its too late
* Giving/Receiving the after a well fought hard battle with a worthy opponent

The bounce latency is modelled wrong :D

Another fun one to try is the "silent bounce." Just cut the motor and dive in... They don't even hear it coming. :)

Sneaking into a capped field with an M3/LVT and troops... :)

Going up on squad night with the DHBG in a tight formation of B-17's and being escorted by the 367th.
Getting my formation assignment from while we climb to altitude.
Trying to stay so close to bomber wing that someone could walk from bomber to bomber
con is spotted, buffs go to guns, escorts drive them away.........then seeing on ch1
"that is the biggest dam bomber formation i have ever seen!!"
seeing a strat target competely flattened in about 10 seconds
having to gun our way out of a sticky situation ( I hate milkruns)
then landing home safely (sometimes) :)

18K+ in a buff formation vs. a FW that really knows what he's doing, mano a mano (unless it's Diana:)). Watching him set up the pass lets me know that he knows what he's doing.. 50/50 chance of whether he'll get one of my birds or go down :) Multiple passes, we both smoke a bit, relentless FW climbs yet again for another pass across miles of terrain... immersive

killing the so called VET's.....
ya know the one's that think there friends are the best......
then hearing em whine like little biatch's.....:D
your lucky this....your lucky that....lucky your flyin ina horde.
remember Wilbuz:p

I made wilb's 262 smoke once.. Then he killed me and went to go land his 8 kill sortie..

'Stressed' radio chatter does it for me.
Attacking multi-formation buff groups.

Pre-Dawn
Large red dar bar at , go to tower look around,
No red guys yet, but they are coming, jump in hanger grab a spit V 50% fuel
Take off opposite direction from nearest enme field, stay 50 feet off the ground til good 1K away
Look back over shoulder til see black dots diving down on field
Turn back with a grin and an Oh-What-The-H*** laugh
Grab to 2k, dive back down to deck to gain speed, watch for the pony or p38 that you know will be hitting the ammo or fuel and grabbing to loop back for second drop
grab at an angle to smoke him as he hits the top of his loop, loking back for your second kill
as you start to pull trigger, hard rudder right, full flaps, hit the pony as he tries to turn to you
look back, see five red icons with tracers trying to give you the Big Hello,
roll into spin, hit the deck and fly through nearest hanger still up, watch as the F6 augers into it as you laff maniacally, loop back up over the hanger and hit the tiffy as he strafes the ack
escape to the north at 50 feet off the ground…………

ROFL :D

Immersion, happened last night for me.
Combat theater, 11 mongrels flying together. Rolled a SBD & escorts mission to strike their closest field.
About half way there we were spotted by a 110. Now the escorts killed the 110 but he called in replacements.
Guys in the SBD's are going oh crap, here it comes, 2,4, 7, 9 dots inbound, some high, some coalt.Guys in the escorts are busy chasing em low, calling 6's.
Radio comms are frantic, hurried 6 calls, sbd's trying to shake the enemy, & reform to hit targets.
Someone finally does critical damage to my plane shortly after I release my load.
I hit the silk & watch the furball swirling around me.
Awesome, just plain awesome.
2 minutes later roll a bunch of bostons to try again. (And scucceded this time)
