i'd like to know how to search ... all i found was this in the FAQ :

Searching For Specific Posts
You may search for specific posts based on a word or words found in the posts, by a particular registered member, by date, and/or by forum. Just click on the "search" link at the top of most pages.

problem is there's no "search" link at the top of most pages ..

The search link was causing a hit on the server, so it was removed.  The link to the old search site isn't very accurate (searches don't usually work)... but feel free to try anyways.

Yep, I heard about the search feature causing a hit on the server, which made me a little wary in the first place.  Was affraid I'd get scolded for posting it out on the board, so I figured maybe giving to whoever asked was a little more tacit.  Of course, there are others who figured it out or know already.  Sorry about that.  The search link probably works once in a while, since I try it every so often when I get a problem and want to try and solve it myself first before posting.
