Sheila Jackson Lee (Rep.-D Houston) seems to have way too much time on her hands. What a total waste of time. And yet she keeps representin' H-town with these wonderfully brilliant observations (from thehill.com):
Hurricane Latonya?
Hurricane names raise a warning
The 2003 hurricane season is here, and that means a whole new list of names such as Larry, Sam and Wanda ready to make tropical-storm history.
Although Spanish and French names are included in this year’s lineup, among them Juan and Claudette, which struck Texas last week, popular African American names, like Keisha, Jamal and Deshawn, are nowhere to be found.
Some black lawmakers don’t seem to mind, but Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) does. “All racial groups should be represented,” said Lee.
The World Meteorological Organization began naming tropical storms after women in 1953. That made sense to scientists at the time who thought women and storms were both unpredictable. After feminist groups protested, men’s names were added in 1979.
The National Weather Service says hurricane names are derived from languages spoken in areas that border the Atlantic Ocean, where such storms occur. Yet that doesn’t explain why Gaston, Ernesto and Cindy were chosen and Antwon, Destiny and Latonya were passed over.
Lee said she hoped in the future the weather establishment “would try to be inclusive of African American names.”
That could take a while. The current roster of hurricane names isn’t due to be updated until 2007.

So "Sheila" is not an African American name?
-
if we have 15 named storms we can have an O.J.
-
There's another side of the coin. An argument could be raised along the lines of:
"Naming a hurricane 'Malcolm' is racially prejudiced because it associates an African American with a destructive temperment."
-
"That's why they called him the hurricane."
-
african American names is a good idea.. there should be some humor even in hurricanes.

Unfortunately she's in the US congress. She was my representative from 96-97. Talk about taxation without representation  My favorite true story about Ms. Lee is when they had the pathfinder on Mars and she was down at NASA in Houston. I was watching it on CNN when she asked if they could take the pathfinder over to where the men had landed back in 1969....

That's interesting. Never thought of that.

Although I feel the whole the whole idea is really dumb was this post really needed. All it will do is bring out some really ignorant comments from some really ignorant people.

Absolutely. If I find anything on her that shows how idiotic she is you bet I am going to post it.

Coming from you jamusta, thats a compliment.
Now go crawl back under your rock and whine to the Rainbow Coalition who I am sure are down there with you.

Yes it would be a great topic of discussion if people would discuss her or the topic she represents. But instead people start gettin on black peoples names and "how funny they are"...
bodhi wtf are you talking about... I got an idea why dont you come make me crawl back under my rock... and for the record I give a damn about the rainbow coalition...
-
Ummm..yeah some are funny. But you missed the humor in "Hurricane Latifah" obviously. I mean, if the black population is that concerned about naming a hugely distructive force after them I am sure the KKK would back them up 110%. Either way there are more things in Ms. Lee's district that need more attention than any name of a friggin' hurricane. Besides, there's nothing funnier than German names if you think about it.
-
Personnaly i dont care what they name them... I think she is stupid to make an issue out of it. I think i dont find some of them funny because certain members of this community are not trying to be funny. There is a difference between being comical and using humor to attack... The latifah one was pretty good but it would be Hurrican Queen Latifah... I found the buckwheat one funnier. A hurrican in the shape of a messed up afro...haha
-
if it's that big of a deal they can give them all 'black names' hell they can give them japanese names for all I care.
damn, now I got the chorus from damn 80's song stuck in my head.
"too much time on my hands
too much time on my hands
and it's slipping away with my sanity"
or something like that

Now that is funny!!! LOL

God forbid if an "African-American" Hurricane ever hit the U.S. Any damage reported by the media would be accused of being racially biased. Please, somebody shoot me.

well... ya gotta admit... A lot of black peoples names are pretty funny... especially since most of em are like 5th or sixth generation Americans..

I will admit some of the names are pretty stupid. I have a problem of black folks naming their kids after cars and drinks and stupis watermelon like that. I believe it to be ignorant. I feel if they want to be exotic atleast get one that has meaning. I use to have a problem with my name until I learned the meaning..
Ajamu pronounced ah-jah-moo "he fights for what he wants"
Come to think of it my name would be a hell of a storm....
Hurricane Ajamu flattens the eastern sea board causing destruction america has never seen...haha
