I need some help fast!
I've only got about 20 years before I can afford one, but I believe in doing my reserch early.
Seriously, on a ballpark level, what does it cost to buy and maintain a WWII warbird?
Say a P-51?
Anyone ever look into this?
-
There was one for sale at the March Air Museum about 2 years ago. I think the guy wanted 1.4 million. Maintenance I have no idea.
-
You remember the old line about if you have to ask you can't afford it?
:D
Purchase price, hangar (if you buy an warbird you'll want to hangar it), insurance, annual inspection, miscellaneous minor repairs, putting a bit away for major repairs (like engine overhauls) and then the everyday costs of flying it (gas and oil) all combine to make impressive totals. The more horsepower, generally, the more all of these things cost you.
And then there's those urges to "improve" your airplane like getting original bits and pieces to restore it back to "the way it really was".

heh, we installed a bombay mounted auxillary fuel tank in a B25 a few years back. It was bound for Europe to do airshows and they give out free fuel......an extra 240 gallons makes the trip a bit less of a loss I guess.
-
A-26c for "only" 350k?
Wow!
-
Well,
look at about $1.0 - $1.5 Million for one in good shape, and around $1000, per hour (Fuel, Maintenance, Insurance etc...) operating cost.
-
20 years? lets see.. inflation.. age value increase... rarity value increase...
lets say you can add an extra zero into all prices.
-
Same site as linked above for the Fg-1D.
A-26C CHEAP!!!!!!! (http://courtesyaircraft.com/n7705C.htm) Only $350,000
B-25N CHEAP!!!!!!!!! (http://courtesyaircraft.com/n898BW.htm) Only $425,000

I've got an idea...if we get everyone in AH to pool our money together, we might be able to afford a ride!
-
That sounds like a wonderfull idea. Who will get to crash it? Joking.
:D
BTW: Planning on getting some sort of futuristic carbon fiber jet in about 30 years. Civilian aviation should be cheap by then.
-
Ask Tony Danza...
He just bought a P-51K to add to his T-6, his P-40, and his Bearcat.
Rumor he is looking for a Spit 16
-
Forget the Pony....You might have a shot at a Stearman.
-
i would rather have the TBM, and just drop 1k bombs on jerks takeing off.

For the heck of it I figured it out once...
If someone GIVES you a P51 Mustang..."done"
With west coast prices including Annual inspection, maintanence, hanger fees, insurance and all the rest taking for granted no repairs or maintanence will be done by you, using 20 hours of flight time a month as an average, it will cost you..
Approximately 50K a year.
If you get fifty guys..
AND find someone to give you one...
That works out to 4.8 hours per person minus the checkout in a 51 which is probably over 10 thousand dollars PER person..
So...
For fifty guys being GIVIN a 1.5 million dollar airplane the individual outlay would be in the neighborhood of 11 thousand dollars a piece intitial, 1 thousand dollars a year for 4.8 hours flight time NOT including the cost of remaining "current" in the aircraft...
4.8 hours ain't gonna cut it for that...
That is the ugly truth Muck..
I've taken the liberty of removing all the ammunition from your house..
Next question ?
But to dream ?? http://www.courtesyaircraft.com

I'd take the Albatross for 349K...
Then it off to Alaska.
