Different game this time and in nifty 3D, called Pirates of the Burning Sea (http://www.burningsea.com/index.php). You get to sail around the Carribean, online with lots of others, trading, being piratey or joining one of three navies (Spain, England and France) to simply battle it out. They talk about other features being introduced over time such as property ownership, user created trading fleets etc.

Looking forward to this one.

Wow, did Bob Ross paint that island?
SOB

If this was an historical simulation, the Brits would be the true pirates, plundering India, Africa, etc. etc.
-
The water looks fantastic
Can I be Aquaman and lead a charge of orcas against those blimeys!?!

lol Bob Ross

Yeah, graphical detail seems to be high. Broadband is a system requirement BTW, as is a GeForce3 or higher.
I wonder how they are going to address the fact that it takes days or weeks to sail between ports in the Carribean?

I dont think theyve decided how they are going to do the travel times. I cant imagine theyll make you wait for weeks in game to get to your desination...
As I understand it, they will be releasing 4 successive 'games' ultimately arriving at the final incarnation.
R1 is going to be ship combat and such
R2-R4 will deal with everything from trade, fleet creation, land ownership, etc.
It looks very promising - kind of a mix of what SWG should have been and Pirates of the Caribbean/Sea Dogs.
The ability to choose from multiple professions of such a detailed nature is a plus. Ex: sailing as a Pirate with no loyalty to any flag, a Privateer under a flag, a straight merchant, a Naval officer, or a regional governer on one of the islands.
All the usual countries will be included, French, Brits, Dutch, Spanish, etc, and all major ship designs and weaponry will be included based on their historical/nationality based real worl counterparts.
The possibilities for this game are pretty promising.

Easy.
Have waypoints, either player chosen or preconfigured (a mix is preferred) in the oceans. It was common for routes to be well mapped back then.
When you go to sea, you stop at each way point so you can change things if you need to.
In the case where 2 bad guy ships would pass close enough for visual detection (no radar back then), have the ships revert to normal speeds just out of site of each other, so you would still have to hunt, but woul dnot know which way to go.
There are other options, but that is the upshot of it.

Pirates of the Caribbean (no relation to the movie) is a pretty damn cool game. You get to do whatever that MMOG offers and the game play is open-ended (like Morrowind) and the graphics are fantastic.
ack-ack
-
AckAck, was the PC version was released? Any idea if there is a demo of it available? I couldn't find much about a demo, let alone about a PC versions release, via Google.
-
PotC is related to the movie - but other than the Pearl and the Disney 'opening' you would have no idea.
-
POTC...
Pretty
pretty linear
While its a fun game... you have errm 7 islands to explore and a vast archipeligo you can traverse in less than 10 minutes.
Its open-ended in the sense that you can wander wherever you like and do the same things over and over again... Once you have yourself a Frigate there is nothing on the water that can stop you.. so no challenge left either..
Gfx are awesome, and there are some mods coming. Hopefully it will turn into the Sea Dogs 2 many hoped for.
There is no demo, though the game is cheaper than most PC games
IMO its worth it
