Title: Thunder!
Post by: SOB on August 05, 2003, 10:50:16 AM
No, not the pile-it...it's thundering, and loud too!  Neat-o.  (if you couldn't tell, I'm easily entertained...and it doesn't do that often in Salem)

Heard the thunderstorms are moving up the Willamette valley.  Can't say I enjoy them quite as much as you do since I have some things here at work that are not too keen on power loss nor power spikes.

So I'm fly fishing last night after work on the Metolius (no luck).

I see a flash off to my right, and think to myself, "Now's a good time to head back to the truck".

Not three seconds after I get into my truck, and a huge bolt strikes somewhere not very far from me, and I think to myself how great my timing was.

I spend the next fifteen minutes in the camp sherman store watching tourists freak out.  There was a lot of lightning packed in those few minutes.  I'm VERY glad I wasn't still in the water holding my fly rod when that cloud went over.

I'd blame the witches. With extreme, pyrotechnical, prejudice.

Lightning struck the Sears tower last Friday.  Someone happened to get a pic of it.

When I was little, lightning struck a tree about 40 yards from where I was standing on our back deck.  Scary as hell.  Sure enough, a year later the tree died.

It's the wettest part of the year down here. Which means more huge thunderstorms. :(

That's what I get for living in the lightning capital of the US/watery hell....

(See my sig BTW)

Now that it's summer time..we get them daily.  So far my house breaker has tripped 5 times.  I'm glad I have one of these.  Best investment from the power co I've ever made.

No T-storms in the NW?  wtf?  You poor deprived souls...

I love thunder/lightning... can't get enough of it.  I'll stand outside when it's pouring just to try and get a few good pics.

A few years ago we had a "t-storm" near Green Bay.  It was large enough that we had a wonderful display of lightning off in the distance clear skies on top of us.  No rain in Green Bay either.

I saw the craziest storm in ND on my trip to Indy.  I have seen many a thunderstorm and been through a couple tornadoes, but i have  NEVER seen anything like that. Not even close.

Usually storms like this last about 10 minutes to a half hour tops.  They just "burn themselves out."  But i drove through this one for damn near 250 miles.  Wind and rain like ive never seen and the lighting. Wow. I literally could have driven with my headlights off.

I saw a small bolt of lighting hit a radio tower just off the highway (say a couple hundred yards) which made me stop enjoying lighting and thunder as I usually would.

It just got worse around Grand Forks.  I wanted to pull over for the night but i wasnt tired and I had told Ghosth that i would stop by and seem him in Fargo that night so I pushed on.

Knowing what I know now, i definately would have stopped.  Driving feet behind a semi by cars crammed under overpasses to get out of the wind.  The rain was so bad I couldnt see the road in front of me... at all.  The lightning flashes didnt help either as they screwed my night vision every few seconds.

The worst part was when two cars in the oncoming lanes (divided highway) got smoked off by a huge arsed bolt of lighting (like that in in the sears tower pic)

The flash blinded me and it felt like I had been sitting on a wooden bench and someone had just gave the seat an underheaded swing with a sledgehammer.  I can't believe I didnt crap my pants.

I feel differentley about thunderstorms now.

Yeah Oct, I miss it - originally from Eau Claire.  While at lunch today up near Portland we got a couple of boomers.  Some were acting as if the world were about to explode...kinda funny :)  Got to see some lightning on the drive up too!

My dad worked with a guy at the State dept of revenue whose wife was deathly afraid of thunder.  They moved to Salem on the advice of a meteorologist, due to the infrequency of the occurances here.  It is a rare sight...probably not even once a year.
