Title: Fetus Rights...what a potential legal nightmare
Post by: Sabre on August 05, 2003, 04:48:11 PM
There have been number of high profile cases lately dealing with fetal rights; Lacy Peterson case out in CA; Jane Doe case in FL (severely retarded woman who became pregnant after sexual assault).  There was also an article on Foxnews the other day about some woman, who was a pro-abortion activist, was trying to have her ex-husband (or boy friend?) prosecuted for the murder of her unborn child (in CA again, I believe).  Her position, though not put quite this bluntly, is that no one should be able to kill her fetus except her.  Put another way, “I, the mother, decide if it’s a person or a fetus.” Passing some kind of federal law, making it felony offense for someone to purposefully cause the death of another’s unborn baby, is gaining steam in Washington; a number of states already have such laws.  What I don’t understand is how you can justify giving the power to decide if a fetus is a person to an individual?  Not just from a moral standpoint, but from a legal one?
