Lots to choose from here but...I have to pick one. If there is one record (yes, LP) or CD that I always go back to and crank up, and have been since it came out in 1980 is AC/DC's Back In Black. What are your picks?

U2 - Achtung Baby

Good choice Diablo - but I think Im going to have to go with ACDC - Highway to Hell.
Metallica's Master of Puppets and STP's Core get honorable mention from me.
-
H2H is #2 in my book. Something about that band...timeless.
-
Electric Ladyland by the Himi Jendrix Interference or some such group is rather good.

I think its because they used the same receipe for music as the Stones - they arent trying to send out a message, they arent enigmatic, and they dont pretend to be something they arent.
Just a group of guys out to have a good time. Nothing more, nothing less.
-
Jimi Hendrix - Live at Fillmore East.
-
Viking Kittens - The immigrant song.

Aye Diablo, what I like about it is: it sounds very layered, while still sounding raw, while not sounding over produced and 'shiney'. If that makes sense.

Ok, I can see the humor...but to post the Kitties twice???

I'd go with Metallica's Whiplash (Neckbrace remix) for startup and climb out.

Beatles #1 hits. So many good songs.
-
pink floyd dark side of the moon= stayed on the charts longer than any other album in history.
Pink Floyd the Wall

As long as it fits in the "Rock 'n Roll" category is all I ask.

Metallica? That should be in the WORST album thread, move along.

Funny, I was justs going back and listing favorite albums for each of the past 15 or so years. According to the criteria set out in the first post:
If there is one record (yes, LP) or CD that I always go back to and crank up
I have to say Social Distortion's self titled album. (surprize!) lol.
Many SxDx fans like the earlier harder edged sounds, or the later more "studio" albums. But I always felt they got the balance right on this album. Enough Punk rock to get your attention, a hint of blues to bring you down, toss in a Johnny Cash cover, shake well, and serve.

Zep's Black Dog off their 4th album. Sounds a little like a psychadelic engine starting up, and then those first lines...'hey hey momma is it the way you move, gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove', then that famous guitar lick as you start to roll down the runway.
"Hey hey baby, way ya shake that thing, gonna make you burn, gonna make you sting"
-
The first album by Boston comes to mind.

Black Sabbath Volume 4
Deep Purple Made in Japan, Space Truckin still gets me going even after all these years.

Dark Side of the Moon without a doubt. This album/cassette/CD can only be truly appreciated cruising 395 and 58 across the Mojave on a motorcycle. (Did it in '79)

Wow.
First off, I agree with Sicko-Boy, compilations shouldn't count (with the exception of live sets). We're looking for original releases that don't have any weak spots - albums you love every song from.
I'm all over the Dark Side of the Moon suggestions. Only reason I can't say that's my #1 is that I like Welcome to the Machine, Animals, and Meddle equally as well. They are an essential part of my "must have in the car" CD pack.
Highway to Hell is also a great suggestion. A classic from start to finish. In the same vein, one could suggest several Stones albums, Tattoo You for example.
A case could be made for any of the first 3 Led Zepplin offerings. Same problem here as with Pink Floyd - it'd have to be a box set for me. Deep Purple as well - CAWD! how many tons of LSD did I consume 30 years ago while listening to In Rock, Fireball, and Machine Head over and over and over.....(yeah, I'm an old hippy!)
There's albums from many bands that IMO rate consideration. I could go on and on. But, enough BS. I'll take a stand.
Secret Treaties by Blue Öyster Cult.
culero (thinks U2 is ghey)

and dont forget creedance clearwater revival:)<~~grew up on that,,one of the most underrated classic rock bands around,,,some good tunes they cranked out

Did you pass by a place called "EAT"? Burned down about 10 years ago.
Anyhow, they widened the road to 4 lanes in most places. Doesn't seem as cool now.

Yes, Lake of Fire, Plateau, The Man Who Sold The World are all covers and some of my favorites on the Album.
The whole album is pretty much a great straight-through listen.

Didnt think of Floyd... but even so, Im a bit atypical - Id have to state that Division Bell was their best album.

The Who:Live At Leeds(Deluxe Edition)
Bruce Springsteen:The Wild The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle

Hmm, don't recall "EAT", but it's possible. Listening to Floyd with headphones on and cruising that floating 2 lane at around 90 with the sun setting across the springtime desert sky... it was one of those "perfect" moments. The nice fatty may have helped somewhat.
-
Some great ones listed...
Best Live album - Little Feat "Waiting for Columbus"
Best Concept Album - The Who - "Quadrophenia" tied with
Genesis - "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway"
Most great songs (in the not-a-compilation category) - Who's Next

Not on CD
Fades out in the middle
The way an eight track's s'posed to
The way an eight track's s'posed to
I got the number thirteen
Tattooed on my bicep

The "Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test"
Was a novel by Tom Wolfe
It's about taking LSD
And driving 'cross the country
Drivin' in a school bus
A school bus on LSD
The way an education oughta be
I wanna drive a school bus
Over to the Brady's
And pick up Alice
And then we'll bake some brownies
And then I'll grab Marcia
And play with her Ouija board
And talk to Mr. Brady
Houses of the Holy
Was a really squeakin' album

And then he chokes on his vomit

But he'll go first
Yeah Eddie'll go first
'Cause he's more famous

Compilations do count, all I care for is that they are rock 'n roll. Live albums too. Nirvana Unplugged is a squealing great CD. My faves of that CD are The Man That Sold The World, Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam, and the cover of Leadbelly's classic Where Did You Sleep Lastnight.
As for Supertramp, that singer they have always gave me a headache, sorry.
Concept album? Oh man...Animals, The Wall, DSOTM, Quadrophenia, Tangerine Dream's Phaedra, I could go on and on. But I would have to say that Jeff Wayne's musical version of War Of The Worlds is something I still get a thrill listening to. I don't know why, the songs are ok to good but the whole thing comes together very well for me.
Progressive rock I have to tip the hat to Going For The One by Yes, with a close second to Relayer. Gates of Delirium is 20 mins of pure bliss.
Best live album? Hmmm...BoG Live at the Fillmore East, B B King Live at the Regal, SRV and DT In The Beginning, The Who Live at Leeds, Yes Yeshows. I love em all.
My fave living guitar player? Eric Johnson. I usually don't get too excited over highly technical players but his chops are...well, Texas sized. Camel's Night Out is best when it is played at the highest volume you can stand. And that tone...
But, at the end of the day it usually boils down to two albums that I have that get the most use. It depends on my mood. If I am in a hyper mood then it's Back In Black. If I am in a drinking mood then it's SRV's Texas Flood. IMHO there wasn't a finer contemporary electric blues guitar player than SRV (note-I am not including Hendrix here because he was wayyyyyy beyond mere lables, he was something that you can't quantify). B B King is the greatest of all time but Stevie Ray played it all. Rock, funk, R n B, country blues, soul,...very little he could do wrong. Except get on that GD helicopter. August 27th is never a good day for me.
-
I can see why you are just ratin' Rock and Roll.
Anything by Hank Williams kicks arse on all this hippie stuff.
It ain't music unless it has some cryin' in it.
-
I see that little Hank Williams Jr., Jr. is quite the little punk himself.
-
Hmm best concept album?
That'd have to be Bob Calvert's Capt. Lockheed & the Starfighters
-
we've got some elderly playing AH :D
-
So, you have to be elderly to recognize quality? So in order to realize that nobody has eclipsed Mozart, you must be dead.
I'd wager there have been 1000+ covers of Hank's stuff. How many covers of Highway to Hell have made the top 100?
Earl Scruggs beats Hank, but he's in a different genre', and the argument wouldn't have been as funny.
:)
-
"The Worst of Jefferson Airplane"
"Dark Side of the Moon"
"Ten"
"Led Zeppelin 2"
The Stones "Hot Rocks"
;)

New contest Rule...
Slayer is not and never will be a choice...:)

30+ years ago I would have been 6 so no I haven't seen JW. My father in law grew up in Beaumont and has a lot to say about the Winters brothers. I agree about Johnny though, as evidenced by his live version of Boot Hill. Man that cat is dangerous on guitar. A lot of people say Albert King was SRV's greatest influence but if you ask me I hear a hell of a lot more of JW's lightning riffs in SRV than King's bending prowess although that is there as well. For me though Stevie just made the act of playing guitar exciting, like it was completely and totally effortless.
As for Hank Williams, I agree, his music is classic. And I got the humor of Holden's post, that is why I replied with Jr., Jr.

Rock and Roll is pretty crappy, and a forced music. Like on Carnival ride loud speakers, bad car commercials, and radio stations that advertise local brake service shops.

Almost as good as "Second Helping" or "Nuthin' Fancy" and way better than "Twenty", "Southern Knights" etc IMHO :)

I like a lot of music, but I have to weigh in with the Beatles, since they are the band I most respect for pure talent and songwriting.
The Beatles/1962-1966 set is freaking amazing on so many levels.. (listening to it now) songs like:
Cant Buy Me Love, A Hard Days Night, Eight Days A Week, I feel fine, Ticket to Ride, Yesterday, Help, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, We Can Work It Out, Day Tripper, Drive MY Car, Norwegian Wood, Nowhere Man, Michell, In My Life, Elanor Rigy....... man what band in their first 4 years has anything close to these ?
Then we have The Beatles 1967-1970:
Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, With A Little Help From MY Friends, A Day In The Life, All You Need Is Love, I Am the Walrus (one of my favorites, very complex), Hello Goodbye, Hey Jude, Revolution, Back In the USSR, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Here Comes The Sun, Come Together, Something, Let It Be, Across The Universe,
Not many Bands can produce two DOUBLE albums of greatest hits PLUS their recent album of only their NUMBER 1 hits..... 27! ( bigest selling album of 2000) or was it 2001?
let me add some others that I like: Hey Bulldog, Get Back, Glass Onion, Julia, Dear Prudence, Mother Natures Son, Revolution 1, Helter Skelter, Cry Baby Cry, Happiness is A Warm Gun, I'm So Tired, Rain, She Said She Said, For No One, Tomorrow Never Knows, Junk, Girl, Getting Better,
In an 8 year period of time, the Beatles produced enough songs for 5 greatest hits albums.
-
Rumours, not a bad song on it.
-
Animal & I agree on Hanson "This tyme around"
thanks all
-
Jimi Hendrix--- Electric Lady Land. (The full double set)
-
WOW These are all great picks, and I agree with them all (with a few exceptions-just a matter of taste). Diablo when you ask a question like this I agree you have to consider AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, and many others. But when you say-you put it on and automatically "crank it up" I gotta say dam near anything by ZZ Top, but one I have listed as one of my favorites is Def Leppard-Pyromania.
But then again what about Aerosmith, Bad Company, 38 Special, and Gary Moore-(blues-but close enough to rock for me)?
I.......CAN'T.....DO...IT.............JUST.....PICK..........ONE
 :D ;)
-
You know when I was a youngster you could not go to any party without hearing "Frampton Comes Alive".
He never did follow it up with anything decent but that album was like a bible for the mid seventies kids who were not into disco.
-
Hmm for album for me would be a toss up...
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
Journey - Escape
If we went as far back as the 70s' then it'd be the first Boston album.
