Title: Sad News: Univ of Illinois Aviation Grads
Post by: Wolfala on August 07, 2003, 11:45:44 PM
For those of you who have attended the Institute of Aviation over the years - the name Rick Weinberg has been synomous with "Dad, Old Man, Chief, Ol Mighty Master of Wisdom"

Sadly Rick passed away today of a heart attack at his home this evening. Father to several hundred CFI canidates (myself included), he stayed at the U of I for over 30 years.

He was a true aviator because he knew that teaching was the most important job anyone could do in aviation. Those of us who knew and worked with the man over the years can attest to his sense of honor and loyality to his work. The Aviation community is hollow with the loss of this man.

He is survived by his son, 21 - daughter 19 and Wife of more then 20 years. He will be deeply missed.

For a man to have several hundred students...Damm!
I hope a few of them pass on his teachings to their students. That is the best thing that a teacher could ask.

I am not a UI grad, but Rick checked me out in my T-34 after I bought it last August.  He was a fine instructor, great pilot, and a true gentleman.

I gave a 2 minute speech today at the funeral and Rudy Frasca arranged for the missing man formation to come over. Was that you in the T-34 in #3 slot?

No, it wasn't me.  I'm based in Texas - the airplane was in Illinois when I bought it, so I spent a few days with Rick getting checked out for insurance before I flew it back to Texas.  I only spent  2 days flying with him, but it was a great experience.
