Title: For the LA guys . . .
Post by: -sudz- on August 08, 2003, 12:10:25 PM
I'm moving out to the LA area in a couple of weeks, hopefully in the BelAire area.   Any natives out there who've got some advice for me about living there?

I'm in Texas now, so keep that in mind.

Stock up on as much Tex-Mex and Shiner Bock as you can.  Oh yeah, dig out that "Property of XXXXXXX Energy Company" t-shirt and have it cleaned and pressed! ;)

Enjoy the weather, and don't stare at people when you drive.

Avoid I 405 at 4:05.

Never head north throuoght the Valley on a Friday, or south through the Valley on Sunday. In fact, if it can be avoided at all, just don't got through the Valley.

If you pick up a hooker in west hollywood, make sure she's a woman.

Go to In-N-Out burger early and often.

Once you realise that everyone on the road  "doesn't know how to drive' you're halfway towards figuring out SoCal driving.

hope that helps.

Stay off the freeways if you can there is always traffic. Dont use your turn signal if you do they wont let you over. Its all about image in socal so a nice car is a must even if you live at home with momma. Dont stare at folks. Dont ask for directions in rough neighborhoods. And please whatever you do get rid of any southern accent as soon as you can. :D

Careful about being a gentleman.  Opening a door for a lady just might get you maced,..or slugged.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo.

I can't understaqnd why anyone would actually want to move there.  I'm sure you have your reasons though.

I spent three years there, and just recently escaped.  Here's what I noticed as an outsider.

Nobody is friendly.  I didn't run into mean people, but because LA is so large and has many stereotypes relating to violence, people just kept to themselves.  Nobody tries to really start a conversation, and gives you strange looks if you do ask a nice "having a good day?".

DEFINETELY, never use your turn signal.  It is an idication to the cars around you that you desire to go somewhere, and they will cahllenge you on it, ruthlessly.  Likewise, you will soon turn into that person too, and anytime you see a turn signal on the freeway, you will either accelerate to keep that person from making that lane change, or you will curse them needlessly for getting in front of you.

Drive 90 on all the freeways.  If you don't, you will get run over.

Start your weekend trips early.  It takes a lot of time to get out of town when everyone else is leaving for the weekend.  Especially I-5 north or south, or I-10 East.

By the way, get used to referring to freeways as "the", as in "The 5" or "the 15".  When giving directions, people will tell you to take the 55 south to the 91 west, etc.

There are very nice areas inside LA, but I found them to be too small and two far between.  Most of LA is like Santa Fe Springs, or Whittier, or Pomona.  Not a lot charm, nice trees, or anything really.

I liked several things about it, but most of it I was happy to give up to leave.  I live in Bend, Oregon now.

Jimbear if you are staring to admire them, then it is accepted If it is any other type of stare then their will be some sort of reaction depending on where you are.

I disagree on the 'no turn signals' thing.  I always use signals, and most of the time it surprises the other drivers so much they can't react fast enough to block me.  The other times, people actually let me in.

I have great luck using signals, and am contemplating the use of force on those who do not in front of me.

More tips:

If you can ride a street bike, get one.  When traffic is bad and twisted, motorcycles will ride between the lanes on the freeway and can get places fast.  I've done it for years (it is legal here), and with proper caution, you can do it without dying.

On food, there are lots of places that you might never eat usually that have great food.  Look for crowds of people.  I live near a taco place literally has lines out the door onto the street, and it's good.  Same with taco vans.

Don't live in the Valley, or inland.  The best place to live (in my opinion) is Culver City/Marina Del Rey/Mar Vista.  Those areas are close to the ocean, far from sewage plants, and reasonably priced (by LA standards).  Santa Monica has great weather, but is expensive.  Torrance has cheap housing, but is a concrete wasteland.  Manhatten Beach is Manhatten Expensive (as in $1600 for 250 square feet, no kidding).  Inglewood is overflown by jets all day (LAX).  Compton is... well documented in the movies.

I'll second that. I lived in Culver City and then in Westchester for 7 years. Used to be a nice area, but I don't think I would go back there now.

Nyet, that was the case 5-10 years ago, but Culver City got rid of them.

No kidding.

I know this because they did it on my street.  They blocked off the ends of a bunch of streets and turned them into 'No Outlet'.

Why does this stop gang activity?  Easy.

** pause **

Imagine, if you will, a gang banger driving his 20 foot convertible caddy down the street.  His passenger stands up, aims his glock, and unloads a clip into a competing gang member.

Now, the cadillac gets to the end of the street.....  How long do you suppose it would take for a big ol' car like that to turn around?  Halfway through his 10 point turn, he's hanging lifeless out the door full of lead.

My neighborhood used to be a big gang neighborhood, but Culver City turned a bunch of streets into traps, so there's no violence and no drug dealing.  Why no drug dealing?  Because the police have got you boxed in!

Those wall traps do help but depending on whats on the other side can also encourage violence. Ive seen gang members hop those walls just to use them as shooting positions. Stack something on the other side stand on it and fire away. But all in all LA is a wonderful place to live..  I cant wait to get out of the Bay Area.

BTW, they aren't walls, they block off the streets with poles to prevent vehicles from going through.

When I was moving from LA to Bayarea (a job of course), I thought that I'm going to go back one day. It was 1989 and I just loved LA, so many things to do, so many things to see. I even kept my house and I've decided to rent it. The biggest mistake of my life. Lost a shirt on it (f*ng unscrupulous lawyers) and even after I said quits, I could not rid of it for a long time. I visited every once in a while and I watched a very nice area spiral into the ground.

I would not go back again, but I really miss the good times and my memories.

As for why I'm going, most would assume I'd got a job at EA, working on Lord of the Rings.  The truth would be that I'm idealisticly inclined to a governer manufactured by machines gone wild, who ruthlessly exterminate the human race.  Sweet!

I'll try to attend the minicon but my beermaking equipment will remain in Texas in the capable hands of a true Hellfire brew believer.  But thusly, the apprenticeship is grueling.

I'm thankful for the advice so far.  But here's my take on the info I've received:

- I will check out the burgers at in-and-out
- I will not use my signal on the highway but will continue to do so on the side streets
- I will endeavor to enlighten Californians on a Hayden-esque approach to social programs, rather than the current Keynsian approach
- I will, though my example, force them to accept a cowboy mentality as more viable than spiritually deprived facile personnal blinder approach.  They are weak and must, via a Thoreau 'majority-of-one' conform.
- I will get a bike asap. But since my Harley was stolen only a few months ago, it will only be viable in the context of perfect safety.

Give me more: what is the sales tax?  how heavy a burden is the state income tax? how much is a carton of American Spirit Ligths?

Thanks, gentlemen, this _is_ very helpful

move inland like corona norco (norco for you my friend already has ton of people from texas you can wear your cowboy hat with being called crazy same with boot's) area and get a job that is EAST  from your house that way you wont have to deal with as munch traffic. in Norco instead of sidewalk's they have horse trails and almost everyone who live's out here is a cowboy and stuff like that. Even have shooting range block from my house :D (or was it less than i block cant remeber) ohh yes btw that river santa ana river has very nice horse trail. inland is fine except for the heat.
