I do not know of a consumer router I could recommend.  I built my own out of disgust for what is available.

I'm sure SOMEONE is going to disagree with me, but I use good ol' Linksys Routers to great effect. I've owned the first generation 1-port, and the second generation 8-port. I used to review online games for Time/Warner (boy, what THAT a great gig) and there wasn't a single game I couldn't play, provided I got the ports it needed from the manufacturer.

I currently use it with Aces High, GPL, WB, NOLF, Links2003, and others with no problem.

The ultimate test: last year at the WB Convention, use used this very router to serve out the entire CON floor from the T1. 75 PCs or so. It worked just great. I understand that the same model was used the same way for the last AH con,

Before these, I used a Linux box (a P133 with Red Hat 6) with two network cards and a hub. While was was very flexible, it required constant learning and tinkering, plus securing it was always a question, even after working with it had become an enjoyable 2-hour-a-day hobby.

Your best bet about picking one out are the forums at http://www.dslreports.com. Alternatively, if you want to ensure that certain games work with what you get, go to those games' forums and ask around.

No consumer-grade router will be perfect to all users. I'm just letting you know that the Linksys router has served me and my clients very well over the years.

I use a box running Win2K Server and the inbuilt RRAS s/w. I also run Agnitum Outpost as firewall software.
