Just read about this in the paper, in the UK version winston churchill won, BBC world are apparently showing the series worldwide and in the world version Sir Isaac Newton is winning
Who would you vote for?
http://www.bbcworld.com/content/template_clickpage.asp?pageid=2376
-
Sir Winston. The man and the perfect moment clearly met.
-
I'd vote for Wellington. Master strategist, master general, master statesman.
-
Nationally I voted for IK Brunel; ever since I studied his work at school I've been totally balled over.
But... I guess most of the world haven't really heard of him, therefore it's bound to be between Newton and Churchill. I'd vote for Newton as he was a local to me! :)
-
Sir Winston Churchill (1874 - 1965)
-
Mr Bean.
-
nelson...or churchill...
-
Boy..they missed a bunch, and added certain ones that shouldn't even quailify.
Arthur..King of the Britons.
Boudecia (although she was Icenic and not technically a Briton)
There are a bunch more.
How does Diana warrent being on the list...or Lennon, for that matter.
I mean if Lannon's on the list shouldn't Beckham be there too?
-
Black Adder
-
Wilt Chaimberlan!
Pieces of A in our time! :D
-
Oliver Cromwell or Alexander Fleming,
but Isaac Newton is also a top choice, for being a giant upon whose shoulders all of us stand.

I'd never vote for Cromwell, since it was mostly General Thomas Fairfax that did most of the work for the Roundheads and not Cromwell. Cromwell came to fore when Fairfax wouldn't sign the execution of Charles 1st, and incidently Cromwell eventually became what he originally despised, a kind of dictator.
-
James Bond
-
Geez, Diana and Lennon vs. Newton, Churchill or Shakespeare?
You are surely jesting my friends!??
Britts are officially as screwed up and us Yanks.
-
diana is on that list? wtf? her greatest sacrifice was sleeping with prince charles. jeez you brits need to get over her. take more pride in elizibeth hurley.

I couldn't agree more.

My favourite (British spelling) Briton is (was) John Harrison, the clockmaker.
Harrison built the first useful chronometer for solving the problem of longitude. In doing so, a carpenters son from Lincolnshire proved Newton to be a pompous prettythang.
-
Benny Hill.

Now you are talking. He has built at least four iterations. If I remember correctly, the fourth one was it.
Diana and Lennon.. yeah, right...
BTW, Newton was no doubt pompous, but he wasn't prettythang be no means. He actually gave credit to the "giants" before him.
Sure, he had a couple of feuds (Hooke and Leibnitz come to mind), but hey, "it ain't bragging if you can do it". Corpuscular theory of light seems to support this.
-
Cromwell was a religious nutter in my opinion. Sure glad I didn't live in England when his bunch ruled.
-
While I (of course) admire Newton's intellect, he did not seem to have an open mind once his reputation was established. It seems he left science behind in his later years, and let politics rule.
At least that is what seemed to be the case in the longitude problem, and the Leibnitz feud seems to back this up. Looks like reputation and credit became more important than moving the wagon on down the road, no matter who's pulling.

Elizabeth I
"When she ascended the throne in 1558, England was an impoverished country torn apart by religious squabbles. When she died at Richmond Palace on the 24th March 1603, England was one of the most powerful and prosperous countries in the world."
Plus, defeating the Spanish Armada.
I can't believe no one has mentioned her.

When it comes to england i think they have had to many great people in their past to proclaim one over the other. Just go to Westminster abby and see the people entombed in that place.
well i guess benny hill shines the brightest

Churhill

its got to be lord nelson, i like chuchill but but nelson did his own speaches. if he did any. nelson was a real leader in the sence that direct orders are just general guidlines to follow. stupidity is something that should be ignored. i hope mr. rumsfeld is reading this.
-
I can't come up with a single choice. These rate highly:
Elizabeth I
Lord Nelson
Sir Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington
Sir Winston Churchill
Isambard Kingdom Brunel
Diana is just a symptom of the Diana-hysteria which seems to afflict mainly British women. Lennon wrote some good music but hardly had the impact the others had.
-
Newton all the way
-
You guys are all wrong. Eric Clapton all the way.
-
Darwin all the way - none of the others has managed to upset Hortlund as much. ;)

If I have to tell you who it is, then you wouldn't understand. Cheers mate!!

Nelson, was an important figure to British history, Newton to science, Shakespear to the arts, but Winston Churchill to the world. Without his determination Britain might (likely might) have agreed to a negoiated peace with Hitler and the world as we know it would have been fouled to this day.

Dowding and Hazed...how come you guys are jumping on Hortlund? It must be some sort of long standing animosity or something.
The way I see it Hortlund was making that comment based on the US guys here claiming that if anything happens in the US it is none of anyone's business outside that country and non-Americans opinions don't matter.
Dowding, you for one have had this happen numerous times when you have made comments in other threads.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought Hortlund's comment was a "tongue in cheek" one aimed at Americans.

-
My post was not meant to be an attack - just a little tongue in cheek jibe. My second post was meant to be an invitation for Hortlund to enlighten me about Swedish history - I genuinely don't anything about it.
Hope that clears it up. ;)
