I apologize if this sounds whiny. I'm not upset, just worried. I want to make sure everybody understands our situation.
When the idea of a Mini-Con first came up, we had about 40 people respond by various means that they were interested.
Since then Mietla and Ramzey and I have spent a lot of time to make the Mini-Con a reality.
Unfortunately, since we started taking registrations, only a small percentage of those people have actually put their money where their mouth is by registering for the event.
We have two deadlines in our contract with the hotel. The first of these is August 18, and the second is September 5. There is no penalty for us to cancel the Mini-Con before August 18. There is a substantial penalty to cancel between August 18 and September 5. After September 5, the penalties are so high that we can't consider cancellation.
In order to avoid unacceptable financial risks, we need to see a lot more registrations before August 18, or we are going to have to consider cancelling the event and refunding registration fees to those who have registered.
So please, if you are planning to register, or are on the fence about registering, do so as soon as possible. If you wait too long, there may not be a Mini-Con.

I will talk to my supervisor tommorrow and try to expedite the confirmation or denial of my vacation time request.
Based on what he says I should be able to sign up before the 18th. Worst case scenario I'll be able to let you know I can't make it.
-
Ok, registered. I hope others get registered soon. This should be a blast.
-
I actually thought I might come to this as first. Unfortunately my buisiness here will probably keep me from the US until November.
Too bad, a lot of our squad has expressed interest. The only bad part of the timing is that some folks can't get away due to work/school (some both-Daddog is a teacher).
I of course will be 6000 miles away and I don't think my boss will let me come home for the get together.
Hope it works out, looks like it would be a blast.

OK, I got confimation of the vacation days.
I have registered.

Wish I could go.
My wife would kill me if I even tried to bring it up....I'm like 3 vacations away from the kids ahead of her at present.
-
Funked, sorry to hear this isn't going as planned.
As a suggestion, you could put the photos up of Boxboy and AHGod from Indianapolis on your con website and then advertise in gay lifestyle forums. This should get you the numbers you need to make it happen.
Seriously, I can't see why anyone would want to host a con. Seems like an endless headache to me.
-
Lance,
The reason you host a con is because you want to go to a con, and without hosting it, there wouldn't be one to attend.
Only a select few have the drive and the steeley nerves to pull it off. A big to FunkedUp for this!

They had one this year in Indy and I couldn't go due to finances and work. We were talking about it in the O'Club and it occurred to me that instead of griping about it I could do something about it. Mietla offered to be a full partner in the enterprise and that's how we got started.

some guy named lance offering suggestions on how to lure in the gy crowd?

This seems to *always* happen... Whether it's this con, an event, an idea for some 2v2 league, whatever. It's always "Sounds great - I'm in!".... then *poof*..... things go almost dead silent when it comes time to actually commit.
I don't mean to wag my finger at folks or lecture anyone, but please consider what I'm saying...
I know it comes from good intentions and being supportive of whatever idea is being proposed... it's just human nature. But please keep in mind that once you say that you're interested, a bunch of planning and the actual *building* of whatever it is takes place BASED on that. If you don't follow through and actually take part in it, then it causes a lot of problems.
I'm just asking that when something like this comes up, that you think very carefully and be honest with yourself and be honest with whoever is proposing something before you put your hands to the keyboard. Do you *really* think there's good chance that you're going to participate, or are you just giving encouragement to someone for an idea that you personally don't see yourself being a part of?
Again, I know it comes from a good place... but it really does end up doing more harm than good.
End of lecture.... sorry. :)

Wife gave you MORE time away ski? I'm impressed. ;)

That is cool, Funked. I just would be pissed as hell right now if it were me. This damn sure isn't a 'mini-con' in terms of the work you and the other organizers have put into it. Arranging hotels, lining up guest speakers, getting a location and caterers for a banquet, creating a website, arranging networking and internet access for attendees, etc... And I am sure there is more that I am not even thinking of.
Like Nash said, people are always gung ho until its time to come out of pocket. I hope you pull it off, but I have a feeling that by the time its all over, it would have been cheaper for you to go to Indy.

I'm not pissed. I knew the risks. Most of the work was fun and fairly easy. I think I must be like the Nyborgs in Glengarry Glen Ross - I like talking to salespeople. Also Mietla, Ramzey, Llama, Jordi, Wulfie, and MrLars have helped me. And some Canuck is supposedly making t-shirt graphics for us. :D

Yep I'm aware of the tendency, and planned for it, but maybe not enough. I think we're gonna make it though. :)

The registration dates on the website did not give the impression that this was such an urgent, time-critical issue, (9/25 hotel, 10/9 final registration deadline). At least one, maybe two squaddies, a good friend of mine who is just getting in to AH, and I are very interested, but are unable to commit this early due to work schedules. The friend is about 1 1/2 hrs from SJ, and the squaddies and I are about 2. Sorry I can't be more set on confirmation at this point. Hopefully it all comes together. Thx for settin it up!
-
Yep good point. The dates on the website are the actual deadlines, i.e. you can't register after that point.
Right now it is looking good. We got a bunch of registrations over the last 48 hours. We haven't hit the break-even point yet but I think we'll go ahead and finalize the contract and forget about cancelling. :)
-
:) Well, there is no doubt we here are all going to make every attempt to make it, even if some can only drive up for one of the days. Hope to see ya there.
-
Funked,
Unless you are worried that there might not be enough room.
What about posting about this at the IL2/FB forum at SimHQ??
I know there are many SF Bay Area guys in there.

Fli if you have an account over there, go ahead and post. I'm trying to contact Stigler to get him on board. :)

Thanks everybody for all the support. It looks like we are out of the woods. The Mini-Con is going to happen. :)
