Gov't: N.Y. Power Outages Not Terrorism-Related
5 minutes ago  Add Top Stories - Reuters to My Yahoo!

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (news - web sites) (FERC) on Thursday said that a massive power outage that hit New York City and other East Coast cities was not caused by a terror attack.

Power outages were reported in the New York metropolitan area and Detroit, as well as in Toronto and Ottawa, witnesses said.

The outage was caused by an outage at a Manhattan power plant which destabilized the power grid as far as Canada, FERC spokesman Bryan Lee said.

"We have no indication that there is any terrorism involved," Lee said.

THANK GOD FOR EMERGENCY POWER @ WORK

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A New York State official said the Niagara Mohawk power grid overloaded on Thursday, causing a massive power outage, CNN reported, and New York Major Michael Bloomberg said it was likely a natural occurrence.

"It may be well into the evening before power comes back on," Bloomberg told the U.S. cable television network. He said smoke from a Consolidated Edison Inc. plant in the city was due to the plant's automatic shutdown, not to a fire, as had been reported.

He said, "I can tell you 100 percent sure that there is no evidence as of this moment whatsoever of any terrorism."

A massive power outage swept across swaths of the eastern United States and Canada on Thursday, leaving sections of New York, Detroit, Cleveland and Toronto without electricity, witnesses said.

It was not immediately clear whether the Niagara Mohawk problem caused the wider outage.

Nope..I think you will find that Quebec is where you are thinking about (or aboot  ;) ).  They sell it to the US cities rather than say..Nova Scotia because it is paid for in US dollars.  :)

But Toronto gets its power from Pickering Nuclear Station for the most part.

One thing is for sure though.

This happened almost exactly the same way in the late 60's. ConEd threw a breaker and the whole grid went down. Since then they have spent BILLIONS re-doing the system so that it would never happen again.(Federally supplied Billions...Nat Defense) Wanna bet it's the same breaker at the same station that went down?

May your power come on before the sun goes down. May your hospitals emergency power last. I feel for you in the North East for we are now brothers.........

A Dept. of Homeland Security Spokesman on ABC refuses to say it was not Terrorism. In fact this guy is laying out a good plan for terrorists to follow, giving out key locations that would cripple the power grid. First it was the pot dealers that supported terrorism, then the head shops that supported terrorism, then porn that supported terrorism....is it ConEd now? Don't get me wrong, DHS is a good idea, they just have morons working there.

There was an electrical explosion of some sort about 3 stations ahead of a subway I was riding in. It brought the whole line to a halt, and we were stuck in this subway for 3 HOURS. THREE HELLISH HOURS. It was about 5:30 so it was standing room only. I didn't have a seat. It was summer, people were sweating, there were crazy mofos just SCREAMING gibberish after a while, just completely LOSING THEIR toejam. And the car STANK. Man.... did that ever SUCK.... thought I was gonna die. The fact that it was impossible to smoke didn't help matters.

Finally the conductor comes over the PA... "We came to a stop on a slight incline. I'm going to release the brake and see if we can roll this to the station ahead". Slowly the subway started to creak.... then inch forward... almost imperceptable at first... then a bit faster.... faster still... At that point people are starting to get really excited, and the train is now hauling arse down this hill. "Go! Go! Go! Go!" people chanted. A total frenzy. Yelling this at the top of their lungs. But then.....

The train started to level off and began to slow... and slow... Doubt started to take hold... you could hear it in our voices as the "Go!" began to curl up at the end and sound like a question. "Go....?" Finally the sub exhausted its inertia and we groaned to a stop. It grew dead silent, all but for the scattered sobbing that some of the women there began to do. There was another sound... distant... was it.... cheering?

Definitely cheering, coming from ahead of us somewhere. The conductor got on the PA. "We made it folks. Please proceed to the front of the train." It was incredible.... We walked through the doors that led from one car to the next to the next. When we got to the car at the front of the subway, the door was open and we walked out onto the platform. It turns out that the subway had made it just far enough that the first door *just barely* opened out onto the platform. If it were just two feet short it would have opened up to nothing but a wall.

I feel for anyone stuck in a subway right now... that's for damn sure.

from what i heard on the news is that NY subway system has planned for power outages and has a way tow the cars to nearest exit. blitzer interviewed a women who was caught in the subway , she said the subway workers led them up emergency stairs to the street.
blitzer asked her if anyone panicked, she said everyone was calm.

I dont want to add to the paranoia and speculation, but we had a stream of severe power surges and blackouts today in the afternoon.
This does not usually happen, electricity is usually excellent and consistent here.

Obviously there has to be something very wrong if it affected PR, or a very strange coincidence.

heh Nash.  years ago when I was living in Paris, I had a buddy take the 3-hour-tour through the Chunnel from London to Paris.

His train got cancelled due to weather, so they put him on the next train, which was then completely full.  Then the thing had an electrical failure down under the channel.  He endured 4 hours of complete darkness and the heat of a fully-loaded car.  The only thing that worked was the emergency door alarm system that emitted a shrill noise loud enough to be heard if the door were opened at 300 kph.
Then they got to wait outside on a platform in Calais.  By now the light snow had become a snowstorm. Then they filled to the gills a regional train that crawled towards paris.
The whole ordeal lasted something like 15 hours.  He was scheduled to leave at 12:30 from London.  He arrived at 4:15 AM.  I went down to check out the folks getting off the replacement (regional slow) train.  Man, there was a group that looked like hell.

YEah, it sucks to be in this.  My heart goes out to these guys.

I live in westland Michigan and on thrusday we had no power, no water, and no cell phone use.  Everthing was out!  HOT AS HELL.  but today it shows some rain.
Thank god my mother who lives in CAnton Michigan got power at 8am on friday. So my wife and i packed our dogs and whats left of our food in the car and headed to canton.

One nice thing is that last night was the first time in a LONG time i saw stars out. :D

Best drinking night in a long time, seems like everyone was just smoking cigs and drinking trying to stay cool.  We went to our friends house last night to drink (nothing better to do) and it was like a block party everyone was out having a good time.

Gas stations are HORRABLE the one by my mothers house (which had power) has a 1/4 mile line to even get in the station.

Cya guys in a few days.

ROFL Curval!  Yes, the most powerful country on earth is feeling the heat... :D

I remember the big one, New York - 1965. There were about five transformer stations handling the load. They were all maxed out, and when the first one blew, its load was spread out amongst the remaining four, which were then running at 125%! So they blew quickly once the first one had gone.
