PDE (http://www.popsci.com/popsci/aviation/article/0,12543,473272-1,00.html)
Interesting article on a new aircraft engine design using pulsed detonations. Apparently the Germans were first to attempt this with V-1 but were not succesful. Good read and exciting stuff for future aircraft.

It is believed the Aurora secret plane uses this kind of propulsion, judging by the strange contrails in test areas.

read that PDE article the other day, there's also a good story on the future of robotics in there.
Pretty neat how they can get soo many detonations per second.
-
Yeah, Pulse Jets have been around forever. It is rumored they power the Aurora ever since pics of odd "smoke rings on a string" con trails were taken over New Mexico and Texas.

cool stuff!

Back in 50s-60s pulse engines were popular for flying aircraft models.

Pulse jets on models.... models thats travel at mach 4?
hehe, it's so easy, all we need to do is hire and R/C model guy to tell us how to make it work :)
A pulse jet is the most basic type of jet engine, like the V-1. People make their own home-made pulse jets... what the article is about is something very much more complicated.....for instance, controlling thrust , let alone from slow speed to hypersonic.
