In this game in particular.
I have a blast here, don't get me wrong. Fly pretty much every weekday night with a bunch of yahoo's that crack me up on a nightly basis. I have a good time.
In comparison to where I came from, somehow, someway this game has a different set of goals that the vast majority here hold to.
What that is, for the life of me, I can't figure out. Nor do I understand.
Tonight searchin the map I found a CV that looked promising. Dar showed the CV outnumbered by a tad, low numbers but it had potential.
Took off and headed off to one side in a Spit V with a Nikky, 190 and 205 cruisin above me lookin for some pickin..
Waggin my tail tryin to look inviting..
205 made a rope pass...
That was it..
Until a few joined up with them..
So there are five high with the low spitty and NOW they'll play.
At what point, and why, did the fight leave the game for the majority of players..
Somehow the "strap it up" and see what you can do was shelved for something that I don't understand.
White knuckles and the immediacy of the "moment" have been lost, or even worse, never experienced by alot of pilots here.
Whether it's "score" or winning the "war" or "living"..
What is missed can't be explained..
You have to DO it, be "there"
You have to fight.
This game has "minutes" that are beyond anything else..
But you have to go "there"
Hey you'll prolly die..
...but you "might" not.
You need to try, the rewards are there..
You got one high comin in, kick his fuggin butt..
Got two comin in co-alt, kill'um
If you ever turn away or "egress" from a co-alt incoming con regardless of what your flyin if you have fuel and ammo..
I'll write you out of the will..
And for cripes sakes if you have one low, you better kill him with authority..
Step up.
If you don't try, its a board game with pretty colors..
Look at this way, the worse thing that could happen is that you might possibly die..
With the appropiate adjustment to your "score"
The horror..
-
It's different from any other game I've played either ... but the apparent overall goal of the masses became obvious to me from the get go.
Reset. And it appears the best way to accomplish this is to look for easy bases to capture and to avoid fights. Barring that, overwhelm and smother.
But individual goals can be different ... be it stats, score, furballin', actin silly or what.

Rank on roster.
imo it should be on a web page only for those that enjoy it.

I would add a MAJOR cause of this is the lack of a formalized program of training with a training arena WITH a lock and key, not the so much debated and argued current maps and settings..
If you don't know "how" and there isn't a formalized place to learn, you just do...what you can do...
Over the hill, quite a few take training, and they "apply" what they're learning.
If your one on one learning from a trainer a night a week, why would you spend your online time gang bangin bases ??
Love Blue Planes ? LW ?? Rice ?? Ponies and Jugs ??? Spits ?? Had an instructor that was more than proficient in "your" first love..because it was his also.
And if your a really old coot with a limp, on oxygen, a droopy left eye, two steps and a wake up from room temperature, Drex would teach you how to kill in any plane you cared to..
You'd spend your time practicing your craft..
Your working evasives this week ??
Merges ??
Reverses ???
By God to practice those crafts you have to get INVOLVED..
..you gotta try..
ba...but you might die..
I know personally that after an informative one on one lesson, including dueling with the instructor, the first thing I wanted to do when I was finished with the lesson was pork a fuel bunker..
But hey, that's just me..
-
1. resets
2. kill messages
The kill message setup rewards folks who land their kills. In AH if you want "fame" you just have to survive long enough to collect 2 scalps and get out. Quality is a non-issue.
In AW, and WB it was about kicking someone's ass.
CPID shotdown. It was immediate, everyone knew, and it got a reaction.
That's coming from a much different place. Folks weren't just about getting 2..any 2...and running. Take even the most timid fuel porker...if someone busts their bellybutton 5 times in a row and all their squadmates, and the arena experiences it, if they have any sort of spine they're gonna think "I want to get better."
Right now death is anonymous. I would bet that if the system reported "XXXX of the Suicide Sqd augered with 0 kills" we would see the pork and auger tactics drop significantly...because it will embarass a lot of squads and cripple recruiting as people will realize how ridiculous they look.

Hornet you might be on to something.
But a non fighting picker/ganger/vultcher flying for the buffer reward is even more of a possiblility in that case. No ??
That and the buffer can't handle that with the numbers.
I think it's training in the art of fighting that is non exisitant here is what breeds the lack of individual aggressiveness and safety in numbers mentality.

I see your point but it cuts both ways...we all know who the guys are that are gonna get their panties in a twist when they buy it. Furballers don't. Only difference is the old system used to make it so public. That way when they bought it it was an Event. It provided the juice to the guys that were willing to develop the skills to brave bad odds/low alt/low E to tag one of "those guys."
That type of kill reporting with that type of personality -- it would affect them, even the ones who would pretend it didn't. That was the brillance of it all really. That's why you'd eventually catch half of em in shades working on their merges late at night ;).

Best fighter driver I ever saw in AW was a guy named DeadF, then +Dead, Cilk or any number of names. Better known as Leviathn in AH.
He never gave a damn about surviving a furball and dove in for the thrill of the fight. A lot of us followed that idea. Who cares if you landed the kill or ran up your score. It was about the fight.
Yet in that game there were those who lived for the scoreboard. Everyone knew that despite the high numbers, they were not the best pilots. I would imagine that is the case here. i've only got a week and some in, but it seems clear who the best sticks are, just listening to the radio or watching these boards. I'd bet most of those names could care less about thier scores too.
Even after a week, I find myself diving in, or hoping the baduns come down, even if outnumbered if only for those white knuckle fights that might happen where I may come out alive. So far the living part is tough, but the white knuckles have been there any number of times. And that's what its all about for this newbie.
That Hornet dude was one of those sticks too :)

I propose we get HTC to build a "LeviCilkDead" shrine so everyone can stop by and pay homage regularly...

Nopoop, I think, is correct. It's all about the training. Everynight there are newbies begging for help on ch1. Who most often steps up to help. Not the furballers. So the newbs are trained, not in the art of aerial combat, but in strat fighting.
AH needs a mentor program.
-
I think many new people have failed in their responsibility also by not spending 20 minutes to read the FAQ and print out the keyboard commands. That's the least they could do when starting their AH experience.
It doesn't matter how much flightsim, aviation or ACM knowledge they have -- what matters is their desire to learn. If they refuse to read the FAQ after being advised to do so, demand immediate answers in the text buffer and refuse to absorb a little of the AH 'culture' first before whining, then what hope can there be for them?
Of course, not all are like that, but there seems to be a disturbing trend toward it...

Having a well organized and formal training program won't eliminate the dweebery that goes on, it will give some of the new players and even veterans the confidence they need to actually engage in a dogfight and not to resort to dweebery for their kills. Not only will you give them a much needed boost in their confidence, you'll also start a desire in them to keep on learning and get better.

Poop-
You've seen me fly, and get into the soup with you and the other BKs so you know how I am. Sometimes, I have to admit, it has nothing ti do with any of the above. Some days, I just prefer to simulate what reall WWII tactics (or at least, what I believe they were).
Other days, I dive into th fur, without thinking.
For me, it's just a matter of what I'm in the mood for. Monday may have me cherry picking in an F-6 and tuesday you may see me turnfighting in the weeds with a pony..(for about 11 seconds till I stall and auger)
I've had training, but like I said, some days, I prefer to fly to every advantage, like if I died, it really mattered. I simply do this to try in the smallest way, to experience what a real pilot would have went through.

I'm with Muckmaw on this some times I like to cherry pick sometimes I like to just furball, :)
and sometimes like last night I'll up a ar234 at a capped base and hit the ratos just to see the dweebs fight for the vulch, auger or killershooter themselves, everyone should try it.
My squaddies in the tower thought it was hilarious :D

"I think many new people have failed in their responsibility also by not spending 20 minutes to read the FAQ and print out the keyboard commands. That's the least they could do when starting their AH experience. "
I agree but that's a seperate topic. Reading and even memorizing the manual won't bestow upon them a set of big brass ones. People either have a competative spirit or they're a lemming (no disrespect meant to Lemming ;) )
IMO the lemmings are getting too much media attention lately. I've logged on several times over the last week and found no problem with finding good sized fights or targets to try and blow up (ie. ground vehilces) While the spud pounders go kill the outhouses I found that has generated plenty of enemy aircraft to dogfight against - until the enemy base is rendered "priestly" and I then have to find a new area to fight at. Again, that has not been a problem for me. Maybe I'm on at a good time (9-11pm easter) and I also don't care too much about what fighter I fly (and so the fuel porkage has been a pita but not a show stoper).

i must be playing a different game than you people , i never have trouble finding a fight.
if your a knight join a FB (freebird) mission , they always good. joined one other night, flew a P38 , got to enemy base , droped bombs ( i never hit anything ) and engaged the defenders (plenty)
after doing lots of pilot stuff i got 2 kills an 1 assit before someone hit my right eng. leaking oil and coolent i exited the fight , shut down the rt eng to save it and headed back to my base, made a one eng landing.

Let me answer this one before anyone else...
*rereads post*
Alright, the reply your going to get it is one of the following:
A) You don't know what the definition of furball is
B) You would'nt know a fight if it bit you in the arnold
C) Your stats are X, your K/T is X which means you are not finding fights like you say you are.
D) Real furballers don't fly missions.
E) all of the above
Now, please understand, I enjoy the same mission you do, and personally love Raptor's missions.I'm not saying ANY of the above. I've just read these boards enough to have a good idea whats going to be said before it is.
So to save time, simply click A, B, C, D, or E.

John we really are playing the same game. Missions are fun, bombin stuff is fun, it's all fun.
Some nights are a blast.
It's the lack of aggressiveness that I see even when a pilot holds all the cards. What are they up there for ??
I burned a half tank of fuel flyin around directly under a couple of cons last night..I pulled open the canopy and held up a sign **Please come down and kill me** with a smily face..
But they were far to smart for that ruse...
A half tank of fuel.
I landed with a full clip of ammo.
Didn't feel like the steamroller thing so I built a workbench..
Surprised you there Muck ?? I'm weird, when there isn't a good fur goin I like to fly out off a base by myself lookin for one or two co-alt or higher. And "work" on things.. But you have to have willing participents. Sometimes they just fly over, take a look and keep goin, even with the sign..

I call bull**** poop!

You have one of those choices all typed up, and ready to send, and you thought, let me make sure I am not missing a way to F with muck...then you changed your reply!

Hhehe..
You mean that's not a universal term?
It means like a snake in the grass.
Sneaky, underhanded, etc.
-
Muck when I saw Johns post you KNOW I checked..
Checking shows me a posters perspective on the subject.
Different perspective, different conclusion..
A valid one from that perspective.
All warm and fuzzy here..

And trying that snake thing..

There had been a formal training academy thing in the works, it never got off the ground as far as I know. To a large degree I think Nopoop is right about the level of timidness in the arena directly corresponding to some sort of lack of self-confidence on the part of "joe average" or whatever. I've always been willing to help out people on an individual basis, but I think HTC really needs to figure out a way to incorporate some kind of basic training for people. That is if they care about it- they may not. They get $15 a month either way.

You guys can theorize all you want about it being a case of cowardice .. a case of skill ... or both. Chances are you're still not even close to seeing the whole picture. ;)
1: The nature of the game revolves around capturing territory and "winning" the battle (forcing a reset on an opponent).
2: It doesn't actually revolve around engaging an opponent ... whether you survive the engagement .... whether you get the kill .... or not.
3: Most everyone ..... from newbie to vet (most .. not all) ... know this. So trying to shame them into believing something else seldom works.
4: Most here have, at some time or other, logged on and seen friendly territory shrunk down to a half dozen bases or less with everything else getting assaulted at full blast. This tends to inspire one of two reactions ... apathy/logoff .. or ... a resolution to do this back to the other guy with as much frequency as possible. Whether it's "revenge" or whether it's a "pro-active" defense to attempt to assure one's own territory stays pork/vulch free.
5: Some players can attend an academy 24/7 (what fun) and will never become furball blackbelts. Either their bodies (reaction), minds (perception) or hardware (Logitech) can't take it. But if they're having fun anyway ... flying whatever they want, however they want and aren't really concerned about what opposing players think or feel ... then they're probably not going to flock to the lines at the registrar's office, anyhow.
And like Poop's post .... this is just a personal observation. :D
