What was all that about rolling too many N1K2s? We rolled with what we were told to roll.

Who said you rolled too many N1K2s?

I think some of the allied Pilots were surprised with the amount of defenders, this was prolly due mainly to me getting the timing wrong. My squad was supposed to attack the Grunt facility after the Mossies had hit the ammo factory.

As it happened my P47s managed to drag a lot of nikis right into the mossies as they egressed target.

The Axis had 6 more than the Allies, but that should not have made too much difference. But we had two squads in strike planes which also gave a number imbalance.

Im quite happy with the outcome though, all of our stats were better than the Axis.

Title: A think of Attack Tactics
Post by: Loddar on August 18, 2003, 12:25:06 PM
I must say, last sunday frame disappoint me. :(

Attacking Allies have the same player numbers as the defenders.
No commander attack with these odds in real.

I think i don't must to explain why. Next point is, that the allied have to go in small groups of attacking planes with different alltitude and different direction. And axis massed over the target.

So, if the allied plan have only a few seconds delay because of discos or something else, the whole plan is gone. Why we given such a plan to do with so little numbers. The axis can jump with the massed force to bring group to group down and loose nothing to do that.

I think we must have a better varies of strength for the next SOs.

I am sorry you feel that way. Squad Ops are setup to have a chance at balanced sides with both sides having a chance at victory.

[list=1]
  • Numbers per sides can never be guaranteed exactly. Sometimes a side turns out more than another. In this frame the Japanese turned out 38 and the Allies 32 .. 6 plane advantage to the Japanese.  In frame 2 the Japanese had a 7 plane advantage and in frame 1 the allies had 2 plane advantage. Numbers vary and it just seems that the allies had a low turn out for the Squad Ops for whatever reason.
  • As for the Allied plan .. well each CiC is given the objectives and then its up to them to come up with a plan to try to achieve them. Sometimes the CiCs are successful sometimes there plans are not all that successful. But they are given the lattitude to try what they want.
  • You are correct that the axis can mass over the target. Which is why they had multiple targets to defend .. 2. However, realize that even massing over a target they have to defend against a wide array of possible attack vectors. Plus, if heavy P47s get too close there really is nothing that you can almost to can do to stop them from dive bombing in. The key is picking up the P47s a good sector to 2 sectors out.

Valid points but the allies did win the frame .. marginal victory .. hard fought by both sides but it looks like AndyH plan even with mistiming and a couple strike groups running into each other with Japanese planes chasing .. still worked out in the end.

Well then, a big and congratulations are in order to the Allies of the frame, and in particular AndyH for pulling a victory off under those circumstances.

I've participated in alot of scenarios in my days, first in WB then here, and it is never easy to be an attacking force of known targets.  The defenders always know, and will always mass their defences over them, so cudos for getting the job done AndyH!

However, I also feel compelled to congratulate Cavalear, our fearless CO, who kept good tabs on his resources, and used them very effectively.  Also a to Viff and his 101 Israel boys, who bravely fought their way out of enemy territory in their KI-67s until we arrived to drive off their attackers.

All in all, it was a fun day's flying, and in the end that's all that really matters. :)

Skyman & Ghostdancer , great event :)
Seeing the N1K's come to our rescue rondevousing with us over V36  was a dream :D
Had Camo & Maskotti (the two Spits that were hounding us) only knew we were out of ammo in our rear guns... you can only imagine what would have happened to us.

I still have to go through the film, but here are a few pics from the end of the frame during "photo op"  :p

Argh!!! :D

We didnt even try attacking from the rear! I wasnt too eager to trying my luck with the 20mm cannon. If I'd only known you were out of ammo.... :)   The Ki67s were damn fast, we didnt have time to make but 2-3 headon passes.    When the cloud of dots showed up in the horizon, we chose to disengage.

We had a great time, thanks all!
