Bush .... appealed to Congress to commit billions more dollars more to improve the nation's parks.
of course his idea of improvement is drilling rigs
-
Drilling rigs on a small % of land that 99% of humans will never see.
Got to protect that arctic wasteland afterall.
It's funny, Liberals said the Alaska pipeline would destroy the carabu poplulation. It turns out that the carabu thrive near the pipeline ( due to it's warm) .
It's much more environmentally safe to ship the oil we use across the oceans in tankers.... no risk to the environment there.
-
it's more economicly smart to hold off on going for that oil (we all know we will eventually go for it whne we have no options). the last country to use up their own sources will be in a much better possition. if you think we are at the mercy of arab nations now wait until we have nowhere on our own soil to get it, they will then own us.

I agree with you there. People say that the middle east oil reserves will be used up in about 250 years.
The US has huge amounts of oil still.

More like 25 years.

Hm, so if no one sees it, it is not of value?
I dunno. I have yet to see a great blue whale, yet it enriches my life knowing they're about. I have yet to climb Everest, but it's good to know I can try if I have an inclination to do so.
I like the idea of there being true wilderness left where one can get a bit away from the artificality of every day life.
But if something only has value if it is utilised by man to you, well, that's your opnion. A sad one that does not bode well for the future, but feel free to have it.

LOL!..they enrich your life? LOL
b.t.w. what land is acceptable for drilling oil?

Obviously I don't post a whole lot, but I just have to say that this is the most sig worthy sentence I've seen in months.
I've BEEN ENRICHED!

Wow St. Santa. You really should get out more. You should also read up on the areas being discussed a bit more. To my knowledge, nobody wants to get away to there. Its a bit like getting away to Siberia without any trees.
I'd also like to point out the obvious... what was that space below your apartment/house before it was built? Don't you think someone else was enriched just knowing that space was undeveloped prior to that building being built? What about that beef you ate last week? Don't you feel someone was enriched just knowing that cow existed? What about those vegetables you ate last week? Don't you realize someone's life is now less enriched due to your nutritional greed?

Mini D, my post wasn't about any particular drilling operation. It was on a bigger perspective; how we view earth and what we can get out of it.
Me, I like knowing there is wilderness and diversity. I'd sacrifice a few bucks for that.
For others it's different. That'd be obvious from the mocking responses to my post :).
None bothered to answer the question that was implicitly asked: is something in nature of value only if man can utilize it to directly further his societies somehow?
And please. If you must mock, at least do it with some class chaps. Use subtle wordplay. Use implications, not what amounts to physical force.. My brain hurts from thinking down to your level .
Nuke: I say we drill everywhere. How else can we get fuel prices, and thereby jump ticket prices, down? :D
Gman: See? Watching Oprah DOES pay off.

It's not much of a question. It's only ask when not much of an argument is available. Why would an oil well on frozen tundra affect you anymore than an oil well in the middle of a desert? They're of the same value both ecologically and sociologically.

Hehe, can you quote me a source on that? It's simply not true. Nothing put propaganda I'm affraid.
Research into the Porcupine Herd caribou, of the "North Slope" area of Alaska, and the Canadian Yukon Territory have shown that they have much lower calving rates since the start of drilling in this area.

Uh. You know, I like that argument much more than the "protect the wilderness one". Not that I'm against destroying habitats for critters; but your average joe-six-pack can't connect with it. On the other hand, the US's untapped oil reserves are, compared to the rest of the world, relatively small. We all know that sooner or later they're gonna get tapped. So why do it now when prices are relatively cheap, and the US has a significant military presence in countries with more known reserves than we have estimated?
Wait, and at some point, they'll be worth enough to make everybody happy.

Anyone who lives in rural Texas, Louisiana or California can tell you they can drill ANYWHERE and do it safely. Yes, there's a lot of noise, traffic and activity at a Drilling Rig, but that lasts about 15-20 days depending on well depth. Completion Units take another week or so after that life pretty much returns to normal. Protective fences are placed around wellheads and equiptment that keep livestock and larger animals away (they can put chainlink fencing if needed). If oil wells were as environmentally deadly as they make out we would have lost every cow, horse, deer and small child in the state by now. It's not like they spray raw crude in the air 24/7. Any small airfield emits more noise and pollution than the average drilling rig. Drillers have very strict rules to follow or there is he** to pay. It's not like the "Old Days".

If you want to to know what the 1000 acres or so that would be drilled for oil in Alaska looks like, just look at the floor behind the toilet seat in any gas station restroom.

Didn't you guys see On Deadly Ground (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0110725) or what?!?! Michael Caine's hair dye alone should tell you oil drilling is bad, mmmkay?
