Go see this movie. Authentic western. I enjoyed it a lot. Gunfight scene is real cool. Authentic shotgun blasts, etc. I liked it as much as "the unforgiven", just not as dark. Wife wants to see it again. :)

I saw it, thought it was alright, but nothing special.  I thought some of it was dull and slow.

Costner is not my favorite actor, he loves to play the strong silent macho type a little too much.

On the other hand, I am a big fan of Robert Duvall.  Great actor.

The gunfight was good, great sound reproduction of the gunfire, but as too often it wasn't completley realistic, the bad guys couldn't shoot too well and the good guy were mighty good with the guns.

As much as I like Robert Duvall and a good Western, I'm not shelling out a nickle to see a Costner film at the theater....It'll be on HBO quick enough. BTW...Ever notice how they use Duvall to prop up a film devoid of acting talent? Days of Thunder, Gone in 60 Seconds, and A Shot at Glory are just a few that come to mind.

True, RPM. But I'd pay to see Duvall be "Gus" in two more movies. ;)

He's just too good at it and it reminds me of how I ought to be facing each day.

Gotta love that scene in the general store with the chocolate from "Switzer. Land." where he offers a piece to the clerk.

Duvall always does a great job acting. The "boss" character in this film seems to fit him perfectly. I thought Annette Benning did well too. I actually enjoyed the parts of the movie that were kinda slow.

It was a good film, not a great film.  
Acting aside, the cinemetography could have been much grander.  The Canadian Rockies is where it was filmed and there are few more majestic places on earth. The film did not do it as much justice as it seemed to want to.  Also, the musical score, which was done in Prague of all places, was very very weak.  I would like to have seen this movie direted by Robert Redford.  Now there's a director who can actually move you with cinematography.  

The story was very interesting I think.  The "slow" parts were a good depiction of the times portrayed.  Life was slower then.  Just think, no aces high!

Oh Duvall is EXCELLENT, Toad! Don't misunderstand me, he's the only reason I plan to watch it when it hits HBO. But, just like Gods and Generals I will wait. A sprinkling of excellence among mediocrity does not a tasty film make.
