Is there a funnier movie? Seen it hundreds of times and it still makes me laugh. Mel Brooks caught Lightning in a Bottle. :D
Madeline Kahn: "What's the matter? Is it that music? Pay no attention to it...WAIT! COME BACK!! Oh, you men are all alike!!! 7 or 8 quick rolls in the hay and they're off....I think I love him!"
-
Monty Python and the Holy Grail is still my favorite comedy.
-
Mel Brooks' golden erra was Y.F. and Blazing Saddles. I love both of them.
Holy Grail is classic, but it's also one that will put you to sleep in a few spots.

I´m currently rereading The Hitchikers guide to the galaxy, its my 4th time now i think,
Its simply the best comedy ever :)
-
Yes, there is a funnier movie...Dr.Strangelove. :)
-
Monty Python's Meaning of Life made it for me

Oh, yes! But some people don't find British humor funny...my wife didn't laugh the whole movie.

The Doctor: "So who's bain was it......!?"
Igor: "Abby somebody... Abby Normal......."

I hadn't read this when it first came out and took the market, but shortly after Douglas Adams died I picked them up and read the whole series. Truly good reading.

I thought "Used Cars" with Kurt Russell was pretty funny. Also "Ghost Busters."
But yes, "Young Frankestien" was exceptional.
"My name used to be Igor, now it's Eye-gor."
Feldman was great.

Dr. : "Didn't your hump used to be on the other side?"
Igor: "What hump?"
-
Dr. F: Igor, would you help me with the bags?
Igor: Certainly, Master; you take the blond and I'll take the brunette!
Just bought it on DVD at Walmart for $5.98. A true classic, and Mel Brooks' best work IMNSHO.

Mel Brooks sucks....sorry, but I just don't find his stuff very funny.
Monty Python is so much better..

I first read it when I was on a trip to Toronto. Something about being in Canada and reading British comedy just seemed a perfect match. I don't think I could recapture that synergy if I tried to read it now.

Blasphemy! Blazing Saddles is the best western ever made.

Um.....well yeah. And Life of Brian was way better than Meaning of Life.

For the most part I agree. With the exception of Young Frankenstein and selected portions of Blazing Saddles, the rest of Brooks' stuff is crap. Space Balls was phenominally dumb.
-
Nah there were some part of Spaceballs that were kinda funny.
Rediculous speed!
For example.

It's too bad that Brooks couldn't maintain the quality of Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. They were both instant classics upon release. He hasn't done anything even half as funny since.

Agreed!
-
It was "ludicrous speed" followed by the realization that "They've gone plaid".
Spaceballs was pretty weak with alot of forced gags. Some good stuff in there (mostly from Rick Moranis), but overall pretty lame.
Mel Brooks and Monty Python movies are completely different animals. I can't say I like YF or Blazing Saddles any less than Meaning of Life or The Holy Grail. Some of Monty Python's humor is a bit more dry, but some of Mel Brooks stuff is suprisingly original.
I have all their stuff listed above (except meaning of life that was pulled from shelves for some reason) and will get more from both of Mel and Monty.

The absolute funniest movie ever made was "There's Something about Mary"
Laughed so much my face hurt!
-
Hehehehe... the Ferelly Brothers are pretty good. I've liked most of their movies so far. Kingpin definately had some memorable moments in it as did My Myself and Irene. I've seen previews to the new siamese twin movie they're making with Bob Canier and Matt Damon and suppose I'll have to watch it just to see if they can pull it off.

How about old Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor movies? Silver Streek and Stir Crazy are 2 of my all time fav's
-
Those were good movies, though they are somewhat dated. Plus, the scene where Gene Wilder goes blackface and is trying to be hip actually made my skin crawl when I saw it (and really hit Richard Prior hard too according to an interview I saw). It's what makes alot of the Monty Python and Mel Brooks stuff so classic... they're timeless.

Thats what I'm talking about. I think Python is hilarious also. Possibly because Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles were period pieces is the reason they are still so funny, they haven't "aged". Gene Wilder is another huge reason those 2 movies are the quality films that they are. I agree that most of Brooks' later stuff was crap, with the exception of History of the World, Part 1. It had it's moments...."It's GOOD to be The King!"

Of the more recent ones, I loved Orange County
-
if we're talking funniest movies.. hwy has noone mentioned Adam Sandler?!?!? ;)
-
Because we were talking about funny movies.
-
I spose none of you Yanks would know who I'm talking about if I mentioned Frankie Howard and the "Lurkalot" series of films?
-
You mean Frankie Howerd? a/k/a Mr Mustard in Sgt. Pepper and the guy from Up Pompeii?
-
That's the fella. Up Pompeii was the series that spawned Lurkalot.
Oooo missus, titter ye not!

I vote for It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, the the Holy Grail. The first two Pink Panthers, and 10 rank up there too.
All better than YF IMHO
And of course Laurel and Hardy's Music Box. (where they deliver a piano)
Movie history does span a century you know...
-
I used to watch Up Pompeii on Sunday nights after Monty Python back in the 70's. And now, The Prologue......

Actually what they say is "A TIGER? In Africa?"
The funny part about that line is that they are absolutely right...there are no tigers in Africa. There are lions though. ;)

See? It's educational as well.

"WHAT KNOCKERS!!"
(had to get boobies into the thread somehow)
-
Some of the best comedies I've seen can be had in the cheap-movie bin...
"Top Secret"....omg, hilarious
"Amazon Women on the Moon"...the skit with Arsenio Hall is priceless
"The Kentucky Fried Movie"...whacked...best with lots of alcohol. The "Naughty Catholic Girls" bit is great, as is the kung-fo movie at the end. "The popcorn you are eating has been pissed in. More at eleven. " and the gameshow bit in the kung fu bit is just plain silly... Guard number one is a senior on Klaun's mountain, and aspires to be a research chemist. Welcome, please, Hung Well! Guard number two is a real skating buff. A warm welcome for Long Wang! Traveling comes naturally to guard number three, as he's a licensed airplane pilot. Welcome, please, Enormous Genitals! "
And of course...Airplane! "Joey, you ever see a grown man naked?"..."Joey, have you ever been to a Turkish prison?"...
-
ok, if we're bringing out weird stuff:
Kung Pow: Enter the fist!
Ya ain't seen nuthin til you've seen a kung fu cow.

Yep, I have to say that Airplane does it for me. Just one joke followed by another, with so little plot to hold them togeter, the plot itself becomes a joke. And so much packed into that movie that most people could watch it several times and still "get" jokes they had missed.

I almost didn't get a job because of "Airplane!". After the interview the HR Director told me I needed to go take a UA. I replied with "Looks like I picked a bad week to quit sniffing Glue."
Apparently she was not familiar with the movie.

Some of the funniest movies of all time, Hot Shots! series, Naked Gun series, National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, and anything Monty Python. :D

Too many over-the-top and gross scenes for me. Though I never did see the end skit with Death coming to claim the party goers, but I heard long stories about it.

Only the Christmas Vacation movie? Not the original Family Vacation to Wally World?
and to your list I'll add, again, "Used Cars", and the original "GhostBusters."

I liked the original, but I found it wasn't quite as funny as the others mentioned. Another one, even though it was cheap and later in mel brooks career, I loved Robin Hood, Men in Tights. The scene with Little John and Robin bashing each others knuckles over the creek was hilarious.

Dear Sir,
I strongly object to the clear comical tone this thread has started. This is a serious BBS and there is no place for humor, non-flame conversations, or gay threads.
Yours truly,

Men in Tights was as good, or as bad, as Space Balls. Despicable tripe from a man who was long past his peak.
