Tom Clancy's new book. Just finished it, one of his best, it is the latest one in the Jack Ryan line up and takes place post Iraq War. Anyone else read it?
-
i don't read fiction, real life is more interesting.
-
I didn't ask what you read, I asked if anyone had read this particular book, attitudes like yours are not wanted or appreciated. thanks

Wow....tantrum alert
Seriously, did he write this one? There's been a few news stories wondering if he's really writing some of the books he's put out

Is Ryan still president?
Didn't shoot down any more ICBM's with an Aegis cruiser did he?

have you read, "War in the Air"?
If you like Coonts, you should try W.E.B. Griffin. I've read all of his books. They have very similar styles.

He should have called it quits with Without Remorse, it was his last good book. Red Storm Rissing was excellent as well, if a little long winded at the begining, co-writer was Larry Bond I believe.
-
The style of Teeth of the tiger is in line with his other books, looks like his work. The Iraq war is the real one, he must have been a very busy boy, there are many refrences to 9-11 in there too. Jack Ryan doesn't play much of a role in this one, he retired and left the President position to Robbie (the black Navy fighter pilot who was his VP) than Robbie is killed by a KKK nut. Keatley is pres now and not doing a good job. Jack Ryan JR (his oldest son) playes a big roll ,he is just out of Georgetown University. It really is one of his better books as of late, although I have to say Without remorse is the best he ever put together. I am not going to say more, in case someone here wants to read it.
the last one he put out before this one Red Rabbit stunk, very boring and did not seem like his work.

Got it yesterday from Amazon.com and read the first chapter last night. I already like it and expect it to get better. But then, I love TC's stories (even Red Rabbit was a good read I thought). Got all his stuff in hardcover and one signed copy of Clear and Present Danger.
By my taste, Isaac Asimaov is the only author who I enjoyed reading more than Clancy and third on my list is Clive Cussler (So sue me I'm wierd)
-
Can you give a synopsis of the plot?
By the way, if you guys want some real reading of real military history, take a look at "Storm Over Iraq" by Richard Hallion, available on Amazon.

You read Cussler's "The Sea Hunters"? Its the only book of his that I've read, and I got it (a) because it was cheap and (b) because of his involvement in the search for the CSS Hunley. He gives the real events some good character development - kind of a "bring History to life" type book. Good stories of some interesting shipwrecks and his attempts to locate them.

That pretty much describes all his books. He actually does the things he writes about in real life and whilst his Dirk Pitt char makes James Bond look like a no tech unlucky savage the stories are great reads. I would highly recommend almost any of his books.

I agree.
It's good escapist reading and his books are based for the most part on historical events.

Man those Clancy books make me root for the (fictional) terrorists.

I haven't read any Clancy, I'm currently working on some older stuff first: Lovecraft, Dunsany, Tolkien, Austin, Hugo, etc.
Someday I'll get more current, but I find prose of today to be a bit dry in comparison.
-
I'm currently in the midle of it. Don't really care for the fact that everyone is somehow related to Jack Ryan Sr.... but so far so good. Much better than his last two works...
For a great read try: Proud legions : a novel of America's next war, by Antal, John F
a fictional account of the next war on the Korean Peninsula. GREAT read, sufficiently technical and realistic, I highly recommend it!
-
I liked "The Bear and the Dragon", My favorite book is "Arc Light" It is now out of print and can't remember the author's name. He wrote 3 books about WW3, 3 different senerios, all staring China, Last one was called "Invasion".
Synopsis on TC's new one? Basicaly before leaving office Jack sanctions a new privetly funded intelligence service that does not exist on paper. Not hampered by politics and not having to get congressional oversight and approval of ops, they gather and act on intel using descrete methods and trained specop people. Only weird part is 3 of the main people are related to jack (2 nephews, and Jack jr) The head of the largest Islamic terrorist group joins forces with the Columbian Cartel to smuggle terrorist and weapons into CONUS.

Yep I have "War in the Air". Havent gotten a chance to read Griffon yet, mainly cause they don't have anything from him over here yet.
He kills Robby off? That sucks, he shoulda just retired them after The Bear and the Dragon. As well as chopping out the first half of that book. Red Rabbit was pretty good however.
-
Hunt, Red Storm, Clear and Present Danger, Rainbow Six were all excellent books....I thought Bear was sooooo slooooow, the middle of the book was excruciating.
Tronsky
-
If you thought Bear and the Dragon was slow you will hate Red Rabbit.
-
Red Storm Rising is the best Tom Clancy has ever written (i can live with the small technical errors) imo, rest is good but far from Red Storm.
Gonna have to get his latest for the autum holidays.
Does he have a website?
