Will the revised flight model give us more control over our flaps by getting rid to the auto-retracting flaps in those planes that didn't have such things? I would like to have full control of my flaps while flying the P-38 since they're vital to successfully fighting in it.

yeah I'd love to watch flaps getting ripped off as noobs try to lower them at 300IAS.

maybe it should be an option like auto takeoff. And akak you say that, but wont you rip your flaps off if you lower them above the auto retracting speed?

If I remember correctly, I think that's the answer HT gave on this issue a while back, since the consistency of flap use over certain speeds will have to be maintained. HT said they can implement it, but they will just have to implement it so that the flaps get damaged over designated speeds.
The only instance I ever read about this specific issue was in the Hurricane MkIIc Pilot's Manual. It says, if the plane flies over the recommeneded speed with the flaps out, the flaps will be forced partially shut by air pressure, and if it is deployed at those speeds from a clean state, it might not pop out fully. But it doesn't say that the flaps will be damaged.
I don't know.. maybe it's possible to put in a certain 'safety margin', like maybe 50~80mph? Maybe n the 'margin' set, flaps will be forced shut partially, like the Hurri manual indicates, and its efficiency will be reduced. If over the 'margin' speed, maybe they'll get jammed or something.

LOL.. I'de love Hurri flaps that are only half effective. those things are too damn effective :)

Because Hurricane flaps are not combat flaps. They were all the way up, or al the way down. Planes such as the Hurricane and Spitfire did not have multi-poisition flaps to do the "flaps dance" like you could in AW. And that's the way it should be IMO in any game that leans towards beng a "sim".
As to the topic? I also third, fourth and fifth the motion to remove automated flaps. I don't have automated landing gear, don't have automated bomb bay doors and last time I checked I still had to manually move the various flight control surfaces to maneuver an planes so why can't aircraft in AH have manual flaps ? IMO let players suffer the benefits or the consequences of thier manual use. Hell even AW allowed that

Having the option for no auto retraction would be great. As for damage, couldn't it work like landing gear works now?
As Kweassa mentioned, there could be a margin of safety as it exists with landing gear. If this is realistic I don't know.
Regardless, it would be great to choose auto retracting flaps or not.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it have been impossible to extend flaps over a certain speed because the pilot wouldn't have been strong enough to turn the crank with extreme air pressure. I'm no expert on flaps, but I do think that some needed a crank to operate, like car windows. :confused:

It ever ouccur to you that some players don't have uber sticks; and keeping track of too many map'd key's is tricky at best in combat ...
I have deploy flap placed on my stick for ease of use.... I don't have raise flaps on my stick .. no room and no need .... this would create the need and take -up valuable stick button space ...
You guys yell sim without even thinking about limitations we all have that are anythign but a simulation ... When we all have fully functional cockpits to control our flat "sim" screen, we can then have many more acessable buttons for control ... right now I need all the eight buttons I have plus thorttle to control an aircraft in combat... If you require me to to remap because of risk of flaps being damaged; I'll be forced to move vital functions off the stick and onto the cumbersome keyboard ....
I like it the way it is .. IL2 for instance has detail engine manegment, but to check engine heat I have to take hand off stick take hold of mouse and look down. I like HT's approach ... less is sometimes more ... the engines overheat, and have extra gears at 15k (like p51) but your not required to map buttons to use them ....

From what I've read, the P-38 could handle the Fowler flaps being lowered between 250-300mph.

This is not totally related to flaps...
Years back , in Finnish Air Force Hawk training jet was heading from Jyväskylä to Tampere, about 200km trip, and he flew low all the way. He wondered why the plane wont go faster than 850km/h and why its starting to buffet..
Ok reason was found after a while--> pilot was flying from front seat, which is normal when flying alone. Instructors seat is rear seat, and theres an override switch for landing gears, and it was at LOWERED position. So the landing gear were down...
Max gear down speed is about 450km/h, so there was 400km/h too much speed, but afterwards no damage to structure was found.
So why in AH should things rip off so easily.. In 109 gears start falling off at quite slow speed, about 200mph/350kmh
Same for flaps, they wont get damaged very easily (IRL), only the engine using the flaps may get stuck...

i dunno if this idea has already been suggested or not, but what about indicating the "V" speeds on each plane's airspeed indicator, as well as what each plane's "V" speeds are in the next manual thingie?
(i've never gotten my paws on the manual for this version, so if that stuff is already there, puhlease forgive meskie.)
