Title: The Kimber shoots pretty well..
Post by: lazs2 on August 21, 2003, 10:04:43 AM
New Kimber in .45 auto...  eclipse custom II... black stainless with tritium night sights... a 1911 clone with VERY close tolerences and work done at Kimbers custom shop.

Thing passes my lacksadaisical standards... will make fist sized groups at 30 yards or so.  Still... both my .44 revolvers will shoot as well at that range and way better at 50 yards or more.

neat gun tho.. glad I bought it.   the night sights are really cool.. three dot that are white in the light and turn a a sikly glowing green in the dark.

The cops that I know wanted to shoot it so I handed it over.  about 20 of em all were wshooting the damn thing and they didn't want to give it back... no failures of any kind with those cavern points winchester calls "hollow points" .... All the cops said that they had never shot so well.   They said the Kimber beat every handgun they had that day... mostly glocks.

So is this one going to be called Kimberly?  I assume guns would have female names?  That way while you polish and clean it you can whisper sweet nothings to her...

"Oh Kimberly, Kimberly...how I love thee...my precisoouussssss"

:p ;) :D

Kimber makes very nice 1911 style pistols if you like the 1911 style.  They  also make dam nice rifles.

Lazs!  Why did I picture you as a "Colt or nothing" kind of guy?

Kimber does indeed make a fine pistol.  Id argue that its probably the best 'factory custom' made.  Obviously Les Baer and Wilson surpass them, but for the money, Kimber is hard to beat.

The CEII is also a very attractive pistol - the finish contrast is unlike any other.

Any pics?

Were you able to find one under $1K?

The Gender Genie (http://www.bookblog.net/gender/genie.html) thinks that lazs2 is a female (using the initial post).

Yep... Like colt in 1911 but thot it would be nice to have the black stainless finish and... to have an accurate .45 for a change.

no.. couldn't get it for under a grand.

the "gender genie" seems to be wrong more often than not according to the sight so... guess I would be more worried if it thot I was male.

curval... Kimber is the name of the guy who owns the co that produces the pistol.   I don't get attached to things enough to name em most of the time.  Didn't even name my kids.   or pets.

oh... don't know how to do the picture thing but if someone wants to post it I can send a pic to them.

You mean this one Lasz?

What I would love to have is one of Colt's reproduction WWI-vintage 1911's:

True, it's not the gun the Kimber is, but I've got my Hoag-modified Series 70 for that.

In the 90+ years since this weapon was designed, it has been elevated to a cult/elite status, since it works. Period. Nearly everything about it is as much as you could ever ask of a weapon. Ergonomic, functional, and with a design and lines that are now looked upon as 'classic', one firearms historian once said that (paraphrasing) that if the egg is the perfect shape for as a container, the 1911 is the perfect shape for a gun. Unlike the sterile look of a Glock, the 1911 pattern remains a seminal work, and case study, in engineering excellence, where the concept of 'form follows function' seems to have reached a zenith.

Like the light bulb, or a bicycle, when a design is pure enough, it doesn't change much, because it doesn't have to. Any adaptation would diminish it in some way. Like the look of a Porsche 911 or a Jaguar, its design is probably one of the single most recognized forms in history.

Ahhh Lazs, you have stumbled upon my favorite gun manufacturer.  I have a Classic Stainless Goldmatch by Kimber.  Best .45 I've owned, easily.  Have never had a jam or stove-pipe in it, regardless of round.

<---Canadian distributor for Kimber.

I'm shooting an Lapd Swat  w/rail as well as a 3000$ Kimber LTP at the moment.

The only 1911 manufacturer that comes close for bang for the buck is Valtro IMO.  Les Baer's are superb, but cost twice as much as any Kimber offering.

Kimber rifles are truly amazing as well, I've got a .22 bolt gun that set me back a C-note that'll shoot same hole groups at 50 meters all day long, and it's pretty much taken over the role of blasting the 10,000 gophers I do a year from my Ruger 10/22's.

Go Kimber!

Lazs:

Send me your pistol and I will take a picture of it and post it.  I'll also give it enough exercise to make sure it does not get flabby.

Heya hooli... believe me.. the cops are giving it a workout.   They can't work puters either tho.

dune.. I have a chrome .45 30's vintage.   I would not own the Colt "reproduction" as it would simply be a reproduction... the early ones had short triggers and arched mainspring housings and mine says "property of U.S. Government.   The gun is reliable but won't shoot groups that are even close to the Kimber.

The picture of the Eclipse is right except for sights..  mine has the rounded fixed sights with tritium inserts.

Oh.. Kimber makes a 1911 .22 rimfire in custom II that is all t6.   Very tempting...

the Kimber comes with one magazine, ONE...   I had a half dozen laying around from the 30's 7 round jobs up to the wizz bang wilson ones in 8 round stainless with buttpads.... the friggin kimber likes all of em..

This is a fun gun to shoot.  I had to fire up the .44's to keep from getting any gushier over the damn thing.   Bought one if them little plastic holsters (well someone gave it to me)  and the gun clips into it... most hassle free holster ai ever used... along with the 1911 slim profile.... neat package.

Oh I know that a real (or probably the repro) 1911 wont shoot like the Kimber.  Or my Gov't model for that matter.  It's a "want one" thing  :)

Of course all this gun talk has made it so I have to go the range tomorrow.  I have a new toy I need to sight in: http://www.hunting-pictures.com/members/dune/J338closeup.jpg

It's a custom Springfield 1903 in .338 Win Mag with a 23 inch tube, stock from Wenig, and a Burris Fullfield II 3x-9x scope with the BallisticPlex reticle on custom scope bases.

For those who are familiar..  How would you compare Para-Ord to kimber?  I picked up a para 14/45 limited a while ago and found it quite reliable and accurate.  It'll hold 3 inch or less groups at 25 meters and is a bit more fun with the lasermax integrated.  It comes with some pretty nice target sights but I wish they where tritium painted for night use.   Though the laser sight makes up for that and has a bit of intimidation value added at the expense of visibility.  Whats the eclipse hold for ammo load?

You bastard. Did you get any one of the 4.6 million emails asking you about 1911 family pistols I sent you a few months ago? :)

If you can bring it to FunkedUp's AH con. If I'm there I'll have what I wound up choosing and we'll go to a 'closed' range in the S.F. Bay Area and do some comparisons. Do you have an email address that I can reach you at?

wulfie.. you can reach me at the same email.   I don't claim to know much about 1911 style autos.   I bought the Kimber because I don't know a lot about em.   I wasn't gonna get that much into em and I have a tendency to learn about something and then "modify" it... people have been modifying 1911 pistols for ever.. lots of stuff out there to experiment with... The Kimber is an integrated package with most of the stuff done that anyone would want in this style of handgun.  It is accurate, reliable and well made and has tritium sights and....The coolest finish I have seen... black stainless.  The front strap has 30 lines per inch checkering.   Lots of neat stuff about it.  Hopefully... I will leave it alone.

Oh... another cool thing to get these days is electronic ear muffs.  Mine are Dillon precision but there are a bunch out there for around $150.   They magnify low noise levels but muffle loud noise (gunfire)... you can hear people talking and here the slide rack back and forth during firing.... even hear the bullert hit the bank but... the sound of the gunfire is ... well... sounds like the guns on TV... sounds like gunfire but quieter.   Allmost a whole new experiance in shooting.
