Sadly, he wasn't being deployed to Iraq.  He was being "deployed" to Hawaii.

I dunno, not sure I would want to work with somebody demented enough to shoot themselves in order to avoid deployment.

Damaging military propery... it's not taken well.  The guy could face corrective and a discharge... if they make it "mental", he'd be banned from any federal licensing for life.

The U.S. military has one of the most diverse populaces I've ever seen.  In that mix, you get all types... even at the extremes.

Bah.. why didn't he just leave the army, or is there some facistic rules forbiding it?

he was to be stationed in Hawaii,

Man that would be paradise!  I'm guessing he would work an 8? hour shift, then have the rest of the day to do whatever?  Can you leave the base while on active duty?

fascist rules?

You sign a contract, and just like many other contracts, you can't just "get out of it".  There are very few jobs that will provide as  much training and services that the military provides and not require you to fulfill an obligation to allow them to benefit from the time and money they expended on you.

That being said, there are ways to leave the military if you desire.  Shooting yourself, while not the wisest, is probably one of them.

when I was in, yes you could leave base.  I lived off base, as most do.  Heck most of us had to work a second job just to make ends meet.

If guy is about ready to make self induced wound in order to avoid deployament, there would be no use to force such unwilling people to serve.
They could be more of a hazard than anything rated as useful.

My first reaction was "ok, we'll try to guess which soldiers are going to shoot themselves, then boot them from the military" but I realized that was next to impossible.

My second reaction was "if you're so imbalanced that you'd shoot yourself to "get out of" going to Hawaii, then a self-inflicted gunshot wound is probably the best thing for you".

I don't know how they do it noadays but our "shift" was 12 hours.  12 on 12 off, daycheck or nightcheck.  On top of that you would pull occasional duty, 4 hours as Squadron Duty Officer, Assistant Squadron Duty Officer, phone talker (shipboard, sound powered phones), duty driver, compartment or line watch, etc.

Leave the base.  heh :)  For single guys with BAQ (Basic Allowance for Quarters), COMRATS (commuted rations), and uniform allowance you moved off base ASAP.

If it was like a regular 9 to 5 job (8 hour day), being stationed in Hawaii would be so cool.  Sounds evil, sorry, but they should hand the jarhead a dishonorable discharge.

Short of Leavenworth, a dishonorable discharge is a bad, bad thing .

He joined the military but didn't want to be deployed, to Hawaii of all places?

He should have given himself a self-vasectonomy while he had the gun.

They will burn him good. Hes gonna get all sorts of charges. When the marine corps coutmartials a marine they find everything you are doing wrong. From being late to not paying bills. the one guaranteed charge will be conduct unbecoming a marine.

As any logical person would conclude, you don't guess them, but have an existing chance for someone to get out of the army.
If they're stupid enough to not seek for this kind of help or whatever, they can shoot their head off for all I care.

As any logical person would conclude, there wasn't any information indicating whether or not he tried to get out of the service.

As any logical person would conclude, if you sign a contract committing to "X" number of years service in trade for "Y" training and benefits, you do your time.  At least that's how it works here.

Perhaps now we know why finland doesn't have a military that could beat our boy scouts.

Maybe there wasn't if there wasn't possibility to do so.
I don't know about that how US military handles these things.

but I know that if someone during peace time isn't fit for service, theres no use for such invidual either.
Hazardously unwilling invidual with weapons and possibly explosives and whos forced to stay?
Whos benefit does that drive? perhaps coroners in case this invidual goes nuts and decides to blow up himself and a few bystanders?

At least I wouldn't want to have such squad mates, don't know about you, mr. tuff guy.

I say discharge this guy under "other". It was a victimless crime, and this guy probably has emotional problems.

I dont know what kind of training martlet keeps bragging that the Marines teach.  Maybe if this guy wanted to be a shoe-shiner or a clothes-folder, then his marine training would be valuable.

Alot of soldiers have done much worse and got away with it.  The Corp was probably much different than he imagined and I bet he wishes he never joined.

It wasn't a victimless.  Every US taxpayer shelled out cold hard cash to room, board and train this dolt.  And he just through thier money down the ****ter.

I think he should do time and get a dishonourable discharge.

Edit: ****.

Edit Edit: Hey, when did the filter get put on?

I think you are missing the fact this this guy VOLUNTEERED for the Marines. There is no draft or requirement for military service in the U.S.

I know, but its other thing what are the options if a person suddenly feels strongly unfit for the service he volunteered for.

I'm not so fond of hazardous squad mates, whatever they originally volunteered for...

Honor

You guys just don't get it do you. Don't you realize that fishu is the worlds leading expert on all things military??? Just ask him, he'll tell you. Better yet just check on his posts and you can see it plain as day.  Of course his expertise is all gained without benefit of ever having been in the military (any military) and without any personal experiance, but hey he's still an expert. :p

"of course his expertise.."  yea? without military experience? are you very sure of it?

I don't know whats up with this thing again..
It is my opinion that such people should be rather kicked out of the army than left there to be a hazard.

Is there SOMETHING WRONG with personal opinion nowadays?
It's US militarys problem if they want to keep nutcases listed, not like I'm going to be against it if they insist..  however I do have all the right to differ with it.
Democracy.. freedom of speech...  those things... remember?

Anyway.. since you like to take expertise into question...  your experts hasn't found WMD yet, however these home experts do have many explonations why not, as in being buried in deserts etc., however somehow their expertise isn't being looked with bad, even though it's equal level expertise as anyones here

Not saying what this guy did was right but...this paragraph seemingly doesn't apply to Dubya....hypocricy abounds!

Feint.....Dodge.......subject change.......

Here we go again.  If you can't defend your argument, change the subject.  You'd think Fishy would get sick of looking foolish.

You'd think that instead of whining that we haven't found WMD yet, you'd put your energies to use wondering what happened to them.

Martlet,

I haven't changed subject at all.

It wasn't me who took expertise into the question and the WMD thing isn't to divert discussion to WMD.

...but: "however somehow their expertise isn't being looked with bad, even though it's equal level expertise as anyones here"

as in: these home experts who says theres no WMD, are put down for their home expertise, but then again those home experts who says it's dig into the desert, won't get noted of their home expertise.

but then again, why do I bother with someone like you?
You don't allow any common sense, you just like to bark at the people like dogs do with the cars or something other which isn't important.
You also constantly insult others and then cry when someone pokes back.
Also you're very keen to remark others of things, but every now and then doing the same thing yourself. (hypocrit!)

What a jerk.

There is plenty of info about Dubya's military record, I don't see the need for dozens of related links.

You stated that:
You sign a contract, and just like many other contracts, you can't just "get out of it". There are very few jobs that will provide as much training and services that the military provides and not require you to fulfill an obligation to allow them to benefit from the time and money they expended on you.

I'm just pointing out the hypcrisy in your statement, afterall, Dubya did get the pilot training he wanted and then failed to fulfill his 'contract' that he singed, now didn't he?
