Well this is all happening too quick, but in the last few days I have decided to make some very big changes in my life. I have been kicking around the Idea of moving for a while, but my wife wanted to move to central Cali, not doable by me as I generaly hate people, in large crowds that is. Well 3 days ago my wife suggested we move to Montana, I wasn't sure if she was serious so I inquired a little bit and she talked to her parents (who live on the central coast of cali) and they said that if we move they are comming with us. That was all I needed as I get along with my inlaws very well. Later that day I was crusing the internet and found a nice place in the Bitter Root Valley called Hamilton, started looking for property and found my dream home, at a price I could afford. It is a 3000 sq ft 3 story log home on 25 acres that borders National Forest on 2 sides, and not one other house in sight. It has its own pond and stream with trout, large heated shop and barns. SO I am leaving at 0500 tomarrow with my father-in-law and driving to montana to look at it. If all goes well when I get back I am going to get my National Regestry (a national license for paramedics) and start looking for a job in the area, either in Hamilton or Mazoula (40 miles away). Keeping fingers crossed

Sweet, sounds awesome, and GL :) Hope it all goes well.
-
I'm sure you will have no problem finding a job. Rural areas are always in need of qualified medical personel. Just keep in mind the winter is pretty harsh in Montana. And get ready to embrace 28,800 dial-up.
-
I was thinking about the internet, but decided that I just don't really care, I will have tons to do any way and as it is I have only put in about 7 hours this month. I may drop my aces high account but I have a feeling they have dsl where I am looking. The winters in the Bitter Root Valley are about what I get here (In NE california North of lake Tahoe. Snow and cold are nothing new to me and I enjoy a good snow storm. The best part is it only gets to the 80's and rarely the 90's in the summer, unlike the 105 here in Cali.

Tres cool.
Sounds like a beautiful spot man, hope it works out for you. 25 acres of land OMG! Unheard of here...totally unheard of.
-
The Bitter Root Valley is very beautiful. I spent a couple of weeks there back in 93 staying in Hamilton and working up in Stevensville (air traffic control stuff). Stop by the Stevensville airport to get an idea of how much we didn't do there. Talk to the airport manager there and decide for yourself if he is the craziest person on the face of the earth. Ask him if he got his MiG yet.
I have to say "buyer beware" when it comes to log homes. Find out how new it is, and have it inspected thouroughly before agreeing to anything. The Bitter Root Valley is home to more abandoned (either during construction or after) log homes on the face of the earth. Mainly because they have 3 or 4 log home companies in within 20 miles of Hamilton.
Anyways... it is some of the most beautiful country you'll see in the U.S. The Sawtooth Mountains are right in your backyard, as are about 5 billion streams and some excellent fishing. I hear the winters are tough, though the valley doesn't get hit like the mountains around it.

hehe, thats almost norwegian climate.... GL with the move :)
-
Thanks guys. Mini D, that is why I am going up there in the morning , to look things over, the pictures look like the home is not more than 5 years old. Would be interesting to find out why the last owners are moving. I know the history of log homes, so I will be careful. I am going to look at other places as well, the minimum I will take is 20 acres and would like to have more like 100 but this place buts up against National Forest land so there is no chance of someone building next to it.
-
I bet you will be getting a rifle...unless you dont already own several. I think the US has almost as many weapons per person as norway.
-
Sounds awsome Medic! Post some pics!!
-
Time to get yourself a good 4x4 if you don't already have one.
-
I have several rifles and 2 4x4's already. Need to get an ATV though. Used to race them in Reno, but I think a big 4x4 600cc will do. I will try to post some pics when I get back later this week.

Well, puting my house on the market, bought a house in Hamilton Montana. Found a job, wife found 2. The house is a 3200sq ft log home, 3 story, on 10 acres that backs up to national forest. The one with 25 acres wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but this one is. Behind the house there is nothing but national forest for about 120 miles until you get to some small town in Idaho. I will be moving around November. There is 56k dialup, and that direct way sat. high speed. It is a little too expensive right now so I will be dropping my AH account this fall. I bet prices of the direct way come down a bunch in the next year. Now I have to buy a 4 wheeler and a horse!

So you're right up against the sawtooths then? I never did make it to that restaurant on the side of the hill there... though I did alot of fishing while I was there (U.S.A.F. was nice enough to cut us 1 year orders so we could get a hunting/fishing permit).

congrats medicboy :)

Congrats Medic!
Hey don't forget the pics! Do you get to name your castle like Curval? ;)
BTW, I've heard that there is terrible delay with a sat-internet connection. It is good for download speed though.

Montana is a fantastic state.
...but, it's is truly funny to watch the cycles of Californians through it.
Look, its so cheap and we get so much land. And heck the winters aren't so bad.
Then the 5th year winter comes. 60 degrees below zero for weeks strait. Below zero for two months.
Next spring watch the "for sale" signs pop up like daisies. Real estate agents love it. They just keep selling the same houses over and over to the next batch.

How much does a home with acreage like that cost in Montana?
-
Mini D, I didnt make it up to that place on the hill either, heard it was average food with a great view, and ya I am right up on the Bitter roots, I guess that is part of the sawtooths.... Its on the west side of the valley.
Furious, I live in the Sierra Nevada's, north of lake tahoe, cold temps and snow are no prob for me, the weather in the bitter root valley is not very different than the weather where I live.
The house I am buying is $375, 000, the one with 25 acres was $525,000. again like california, except there is no sales tax, hardly any regulations, and the goverment pretty much leaves you alone. It's not like winning the lottery to get elk ,deer and moose permits, heck for a bull elk tag it is $14 for a resident.

Pictures...please post pictures.
:)
Sounds great...big log cabin. 3 stories and 3200 square feet? That's huge.
Sounds like an awesome buy, congrats.

Where do your folks live on the Central Coast? I lived all over the area, and My eldest daughter was born in SLO.
-
One thing to check on the newer log homes is to see if they still have plenty of space left for the logs to finish settling. If the home is 5 years old and the logs are tight against the door jams and window frames, they'll probably break in the next couple of years. I can't recomend enough getting an inspector that is familiar with log homes.

MT: My inlaws live just out side King City, her grandparents live in Paso.
Mini D: The home was built in 94, so 9 years and I checked all the doors and windows, no problems. But we are having an inspector look at the house just in case.

Loved the Central Coast. Compared to Socal, it is freaking empty of people. (or was)
I had a place in Templeton for a couple years. That would have been 1984, cause I remember the Olympic torch relay went right down my street.
Sandy Koufax lived in Templeton at the time. Used to run into him at the market. The population of Templeton was about 1,800 IIRC.

My wife used to live in Tempelton and worked as an ER tech at Twin City's Hospital.
-
Been trying to get my wife to move back to my home state of Colorado.
I had a great place picked out with 50acres.
But NOOOOOO she's a dang city girl so we stuck down here in Texas till we retire.
But we did buy a really nice 4400 sq ft house so I aint crying too much.
But man how I miss the moutains.
Oh and Medicboy I am taking my EMT refresher in Oct and In Tx now they Make you take the national reg too.
Good luck and enjoy the high country.
