The AH Terrain Editor has been released and is available from our download page. It is more or less in open beta at this point as it still needs a few things finished up.
The beta crew did an extremely good job and were very patient with us as this project often to had sit on our backburner. Please thank AKWabbit, Fury, Jarbo, Ogre, Raxx, and Vermillion for their work in this endeavor.

The documentation they put forth on this was excellent but I haven't been able to complement that work with a good job of editing and formating. There were also late changes and additions to the editor that haven't been covered in the docs. The docs will continue to be revised and player contributions are welcome.

Also be sure to check out Ogre's webpage. Our terrain data is in an open format that allows other parties to write programs for it. Ogre has an excellent utility that allows for USGS data to be imported into the AH format, saving terrain designers a lot of time and effort. A link to his page is located in the download section.

Ok, excuse my stupid question, but what good is this terrain thingamabob anyhow?  Will you be able to implement your terrain into the MA or SEA?  If not, what use is it?  I've never flown head to head, and if that is the only place it could be used, wtf is the big deal?

BagPiper - go HERE (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/Forum1/HTML/004738.html) and you'll see a bit of what the possibilities are.

Sure, it would be my guess, not having seen the editor yet (and oh how cool!), that terrain will indeed initially be for offline and H2H use...

However, what the terrain editor allows is user-created specialized terrain for scenarios and special events. It would be my guess that really good terrains - similar to that referenced above - will most likely be adopted for general arena use.

This really is a cool thing.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Bagpiper, for sure the terrains will be used for Special Events.  I'm sure some of them might find their way into the main arena too.  I don't know if you flew during beta, but the beta terrain was designed by a player, Ogre.  HTC is wisely allowing the energy and expertise of the AH community to do some work for them.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

All I needed to know, thanks Funked.

MarkAT, you're my hero.  As for my attitude towards this sim, just so you know, I did one of the first large (over 4000) word reviews of this sim, and I've spent about 300$ of long distance money speaking with the HTC crew before, during, and after this process.  I also refused a free account that was offered to me, and I'm happy to fork over my cash every month.  I love this game and the folks behind it more than anything else I do online (I play over a dozen games regularly online), so I hope you didn't think I was dissing them.  I just don't get what the big deal is with terrain.  I'd rather have naval units or a/c - something that can be used daily in the MA.  If someone comes out with cool pacific terrain or something, and it gets put into the MA, hey that's great, but tell me what the odds are of that happening?

Hmm did I see there that it lets you use airplane and vehicle shapes for building shapes?  Now that is cool - *pictures rows of parked 190's*   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Funked, just wait until you make a strafing run on one of my medium airfields  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

I put several bomber, transports, and fighters dispersed around the field, and set them as bombable targets.

It looks just like some of the guncamera film that I have seen.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

I will start working on a Gulf of Finland / Southern Finland map.  I hope to include the whole southern Finland, parts of northern Estonia, and the St Petersburg area to the map.  And Karelia, of course.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Looking forward to some Finland vs Russia scenarios!
